Twenty nine carloads of cattle and one carload of horses were billed out from here. The first quarterly meeting of the conference year was held here Saturday and Sunday by Presiding Elder Julian, and on Sunday evening lie preached at Codarc. Father Munich will have charge of the Catholic church at Montrose in fu ture. He is located at Crawford. Fath er Brophy will continue to make occa sional visits to Harrison. Your pastor believes in free and un limited coinage, at the ratio of 10 to 1. Come to the church in Harrison Sunday evening, October IHth, and hear him discourse upon the subject. John P. Curran, a ranchman in Sioux county, was in the city yesterday and made this ollice a very pleasant visit. Mr. C. says they are all republi cans in his neighborhood. Alliance The county court was engaged Saturday with a case between J. Hunter and Mrs. F. Tscliabold over possession of some fodder. It was tened to by Jude Wilson and a jury and resulted in a verdict for Hunter. ' The time of year is here when we want wood on subscription. We should like to have several loads before had weather sets in, and those who intend paying in that way will confer a favor by attending to it promptly. The time for filing nominations made by conventions, primaries, etc., expired on Monday and the time for get ting names on the official ballot by peti tion will expire on next Wendesday. The ballots will lie the largest ever used in this county, and the proposed amend ments to the constitution will be ona separate sheet and a separate ballot box will be provided in which to deposit them. Henry K reman, road overseer of White River road district, has instituted proceedings in court to compel the F. E. Ja M. V. railroad to put In a crossing in the east part of the county where a wagon road crosses its track. The law provides that such suits shall lie brought by the road overseer in tlie name of the county. Attorney Outhrie appears for the plaintitr. In some of the precincts full pre cinct tickets have been nominated, in cluding two justices of tlie peace and two constables. Such ofllcers only 'are to be elected this year to fill vacancies, nnd can only be put on the ballot under uch conditions. In cases where there is one vacancy and two were nominated t. iIia aiLme nrimarv or caucus neither "j " cnbenuton the ballot, as 1 strictly forbids it. The regular election of justices and constables occurs in the seme year that the county officer are elected. Smith P, Tuttle, republican candi date for representative In this district, accompanied by L. H. Corbin, has been in Sioux county a part of the past week getting acquainted with the people and letting the people get acquainted with him. He is tlie kind of a man who make friends among the people and in the event of his election the northwest district will have a good representative. Tlie report from over the district are quite favorable to his success, although the dirtrict ha been one of the populist strongholds in the past. -Petitions have been illed with a suf ficient number of name attached o that Frank TinkhnnVi name will be on the of- nvial ballot as a candidate for county tk first district, lie it noDular in tlie eatire district as a man and hi work a a member of the county board haa given such general satisfac tion that there is a general sentiment th. district In favor of hi being given Mother term. No one will dispute the Mserlion that tlie r.ffaini of toe county never were better managed than they have been since the board ha been aa at preeent'oonetitutedaml It in quit v- PERSONAL. 8. I VI lis went to Crawford the first of the week. State Bank Examiner Cowdery was in Harrison yesterday. ' Mr. M. J. Blewett is visiting her par ents in War boo net precinct. B. E. Brewster arrived on Tuesday to look after his interests in this locality. Mrs. Bowdish and Miss Lewis, of Crawford, were Harrison visitors on Tuesday. A. R. Kennedy was up from Crawford on iuesxlay looking alter lus aioux county interests. John R. Shepherd arrived last Thurs day from Ottuinwa, Iowa, on his annual visit to his son, W, F. Shepherd. Hon. F. M. Dorrington, of Alliance, was in Harrison Monday oa his way to Bodarc where he held a meeting in the evening. By reason of a misunderstanding Hon. F, M. Dorrington was announced to speak both at the Bodaro and Serres school house on Monday night and as a result those who went the the lattor place were disappointed. The party who had charge of it got things mixed. Judge Greene spoke at the court house on Tuesday to an audience of less than sixty people. Those of his faith seemed fairly well pleased with his talk, but some republicans who heard it say that his main argument was ridicule and that he designated those who differed with him as being fools and charged them with not being patriotic citizens, and said that they ought to move out of the country. He claimed that he would be elected by 5.000 majority. He denied having been drunk at Sidney and said the report that he was drunk were re publican lies. The fact that he is now accompanied by his wife, which was not the CHse prior to the reported spree at Sindey, gives his assertion a peculiar as pect to say the least. It will be but a short time now until he will realize just how foolish he was when he claimed he would have a majority of (5,000. The fact that the work of counting the balloW this year will be a much greater task than has ever devolved upon the boards of election in Nebsaska leads to the suggestion that in making up the boards care should be exercised in selecting men who can do the work as rapidly as possible. Even then it will likely be an all night job in most of the precinct, so that it will lie neqessnry to have plenty of lamps with oil sufficient to burn all night. It might not lie out of place at this lime to suggest to those who make it a point to fill out all the places on the ballot for precinct officers with names of those who are not candi dates and who would not qualify if elected, that this would be a good year to refrain from so doing. Such things cause a little fun while tlie counting roes on, but it takes a lot of time to make up the record and this year would prove a hardship to the members of the election boards. A little thought such matter will make the work go off smoother. Dr. J. S. Anderson, state veterina Han, came to Harrison last Thursday on official business. The cattle brought up from the south a short time ago by Jim Earnest were reported to the governor m bain? infected with ticks, aDd thus endangering the spread of Texas fever. Dr. Anderson found such to be the case and quarantined the stock until the cold weather ahall have destroyed the ticks. A frost destroys the fever germs all danger of the disease being communicat ed to other cattle 1 past. The fever has no serious effect on southern cattle, but when transmitted to northern stock it becomes very destructive, and great necessary to prevent its spread. Dr. An' rleinon ha been known to the writer for many year and i recognized as one of the foremost in hi profession in the state. He was appointed to his position short time airo bv Gov. Holcomb as some diseased cattle had been unioauea in Seward county and prompt and ettl cient measures were necessary to protect ih utix'k owner, and in appointing mm ih irnvernor made no mistake. The stock interests of Nebraska are sufficient important so that a state veterinarian nuirht to be provided for but as a rule the legislature tans w mane ui pro vision. Desc. sec. T. R. amt. aw ne.
