Major Clarksoa has lon: been a resident

, ..ntitlrtl tn Inval minrwirl The fin
men entitled lo wnai support, ine c-on
vention which selected the ticket was as
free from anything like ring work asaj
gathering of that kind could be. No
slate was fixed up but what wus
smashed by the convention and when il
adjourned there were no sore cpots to
cause irritation aod defection. The
same is true of the conventions of the
party in each of the congressional dis
tricts, where good men were named as
candidates. There are no weak men on
the ticket and the result will bu victory
in November. The conditions in the
rauks of the opposition are very differ
ent. Never in the history of the state
has the work of a few political leaders
been so far reaching as has been that of
Bryan, Holcomb, Allen, Thompson,
Greene, and a few others. It reached
two national conventions, four state
conventions as well as congressional and
minor gatherings of the populist and
democratic parties. The rank and file
bad nothing to say in the matter. Tbe
program was made up by the managers
aod carried out, regardless of the wishes
of the masses, they could take the dose
fixed up for them or let it alone. In ad
dition to that many of the official acts
of Gov. Holcomb, especially in matters
relating to the various slate institutions,
have been very unsatisfactory, not only
as a partisan matter but on the broad
grounds of public welfare and humanity.
Considering all those things it is not at
all unreasonable for tbe republicans to
look forward to tlie result in November
with full confidence f victory, for time
demonstrates tbe fact that many wbo
were formerly republicans but went
into the populist party in hope of ac
complishing some of the things which
tha agitators claimed would ht so easily
brought about, have seen the error of
their way and returned tbe republican
