Meridith was up from Crawford on Monday in consultation with Dr. Phinny in regard to Dan Slattery who is suffering from pleurisy. At last reports the patient was no better. One day a festive bovine of the vint age of came down the street and walked deliberately into The Journal office. It is supposed that his calf ship es pied the editor through the open door and concluded that he was green enough to eat When The Jochnal mentioned the fact last week that John Hanson went down the road the writer was not aware of the important mission on which he was bent. He went to the county judge at Chadron and procured a license to wed Misc Ida Sides. Presiding Elder Julian was called upon and united the young couple in the bonds of marriage and they were here to celebrate the 4th and receive the congratulations of many friends and good wishes of all for a long, happy and prosierous married life. The populists held their county con vention yesterday. It was not largely attended, no controversy occurred over anything. Judge Wilson and D. A. Pub- low were elected delegates to the state convention, and W. J. A. Raum and James Nolan to the congressional, sena torial and representative conventions. Grant Guthrie was nominated for coun ty attorney, and B. F. Thomas for sur veyor to (111 vacancy. W. J. A. Raum was elected chairman of the county cen tral committee and F. W. Knott sec retary. The adjourned school meeting on Monday was not largely attended and most of those present were residents of tlie village. The object of every one present seemed to be to devise ways and means to provide the necessary accom modations for the children with the least expense and still have something permanent After considerable inform al discussion ttie board was authorized to have an addition built on the east of the present building, changing the en trance from tlie west to the south side, at an expense not to exceed $600.00, and a levy of 11 mills for general fund was voted to meet the expense. Until the old indebtedness of the village is wiped out the taxpayers are not likely to favor anything which is not absolutely neces sary which will increase the rate of tax ation. Amerlcaa Poison. The Frenchman, not without reason, calls our iced drinks "American Poisons." As a matter of fact, cool spring water .. . . 1. t . L I .1 Will allay lllirsi mucn ueiwr man iceu water: but it is very difficult to convince those addicted to the iced-water habit of this fact The grave harm caused by iced water is from swallowing it quickly and in large quantities. If sipped slowly and held in the mouth for a moment, toe temperature is raised appreciably before reaches the stomach, and its cooling effects reach that part of the body where is most needed, -the head, throat, and upierrt of tlie chest. For this reason iced cream is much less dangerous man iced water; we eat it slowly, and it is not only entirely melted, but also per ceptibly warmed, before it enters the stomach. This well known fact, which every one can verify for himself, is entirely ignored by tnose alarmists wiw um mi limit ing pictures of the internal economy, representing the stomach and its con tents as almost paralyzed by the sudden ly congealing influence of the introduc tion of a massof frosen cream. Of course if this were so the danger would be im mense, for when the stomach is attend ing in it mnninted duties actively en gaged in the process of digestion it is a little lurnace.anu any muiiwni.K - its fires results in the immediate discora-,.- nt lt nvnr and overseer. When you deluge it with iced drinks you put out the Ores, and arrested digestion means acute pain ana mucn uiscomior. Don't ask it to do so much work when the thermometer goes above 80 degrees; then the fires will not have to be so hot, and you will not suffer from what you feel is a consuming thirst From "Sum mer Hygiene , in uemorost s for July.
