Sixth district republican convention to
nominate a candidate for congreM, at North
l'lalte, Jaly 3, at 10 a. m.
Senator Warren, of Wyoming:, ex
presses the opinion that there is no
doubt that his state will give a republi
can majority at the polls.
Col. Ketchum has purchased a con
troling interest in the Crawford TrQmne
and hits changed it to a republican
paper. It never should have been any
thing else.
The last issue of the "newspaper in
the true sense of the word" printed at
Harrison indicated the real purjxise for
which it was started. The leopard can
not change its snots, neither can the tool
of a rin lonjj keep from showing his
real position.
The bolt from the national republican
convention consisted of twenty-two del
egates. Eight were from Colorado, six
from Idaho, three from Nevada, three
from Utah, one from Montana and one
from South Dakota. Idaho and Colora
do were the only solid delegations which
(eft the hall.
A draft stallion tlmt will not pull
down the scales at from 2,000 to 2,250
pounds is scarcely up to the required
standard as to weight. The day of light
horses for draft purposes has gone b',
It takes a sound horse of at least 1.&00
pounds weight to bring a profitable
price nowadays, and horses of this de
scription do not spring from light weight
stallion: Nebraska Farmer.
We learn from the statistics that we
are sending out of this country every
year more than 1300,000,000 in gold for
agricultural products, is it any wonder
that the gold reserve constantly falls?
If we would adopt a policy that would
enable us to raise these things ourselves,
on our own fields and farms, this great
outgo of gold would be stopped. Why
not be sensible. Fremont Tribune.
One of the bright spots in the dreay
life of the newspaper publisher is when
flie disappointed office-seeker whom the
.eople had jio use for lays all the blame
of his own unpopularity on the publisher
and stops his paper, giving a false rea
son for so doing and hugaring the be
lief that he has acted real "cute." A
person of that calibre dont fool any
body but himself, and by his act admits
the superiority of the publisher.
Smith P. Tuttle, of llemingford, is an
nounced as a candidate for the republi
can nomiuation for representative for
this district and will have the support of
Box Butte county in the convention.
It looked for a time as if Frank Currie,
of Whitney, was the only aspirant for
1 lie place but now that Mr. Tuttle has
hied his castor into the ring it is hard to
predict which one will be the nominee.
The Journal would suggest that the
two get together and canvass the s'tUr.v
tion, and the one who possesses the most
elements of strength and the fewest ele
ments of weakness be accorded a clear
field. The fellow who makes the race
will have a hard job on his bund:; if he
wins and no mistakes should be made
which will jeopardize the chance of re
republicari success. A republican legis
lator from this district is very desirable,
a nd the strongest man to be found will
be needed to win.
Two Sides to the Question.
Kearney Hub.
The Omaha Trade Exh Snt savs that
ihere is getting to be a widespread senti
ment in this state in favor of a change
in our laws under which real estate
mortgages are foreclosed. "At pres
ent," it says, "the defendant can by dif
ferent dilatory tactics delay proceedings
Hod retain possession of the property un-
ler process of foreclosure for about two
years." Then follows a plea in favor of
the leader, "who wants only security
for his money and interest upon it, no
that a long as the security remains in
tact aad the interest is paid lie is satia-
Uad." Of course. That would satisfy
ay kef Itiaoau leader.
at there are two sides to the ques
ttoa. During the past few years, as
wry a kaowa, it haa bean impossible
lav away fcators lo pay the interest on
ffaal lili lamaa At tha saaie tin a
aVackUiia of value has wiped oat the
fiflial equity, and t 9 property was
put up to forced a!e Die cliauces have
been that it would lull abort of bringing
the face of tlie mortgage And leave a dw-tkieiK-y
judgment against the debtor
beetle.
The Hub Ikis bo kick" ajrainst the
capitalist or the money lender, as a rule,
but it is of opinion that their rights are
sufficiently protected under the statutes
of Nebraska, Tlie Trwlt: Ejhitrit inti
mates t.'iiit a movement w ill be made in
the next legislature to remedy tle "evil"
that It lias complained of. Watch out
for it. It can ouly get through by
stealth, therefore the greater watchful
ness will be necessary.
It miht be agreed that the debtor
should have les opiiortuoity to'fiI)i
buster" with stays and continuances, if
on tin other hand the '"deficiency judg
ment" clause should be eliminated from
the statutes. Th1 person who makes a
loan is sal.l;sd with tin security or he
wouldn't make it If depreciation oc
curs, through u:ieen causes such as
we have witness sd during t!w past three
years the debtor stands the whole
brunt of it, and after foreclosure is fol
lowed by a deficiency judgment that he
cannot meet and that injures his credit
and is a stumbling hl.tck in his path for
life perhaps. Tins should not be. The.
niau who makes a real estate loan
should do il with his eyes open, and
have nothing beyond the security origin
ally incepted. II should stand his
share ol Ions with tl borrower li-re
shrinkage occurs, and it shim Id not be
possible for the borrower to lie made the
victim of low appraisements through
the connivance of those who execute the
law with those who have no compunc
tions a:r-tiiist squeezing the last drop of
bhtod from an unfortunate debtor.
The loaning ol money is a business
and should I regarded as such, and
have no more safeguard' thrown around
it than will enable the creditor to get
his money back in due time or the secu
rity that is re presented by hislnnn. The
"deficiency judgment" has made debtors
for life of thousands of holiest men in
this state during the past few years,
while tlie creditor has gained little or
nothing by it. The laws should enable
every insolvent person to commence
anew instead of hanging a millstone
upon bis neck that will prevent, him
fri'in ever afjain climbing the ladder ol
prosperity.
So we say. that if it i proposed to
shorten the delay in real estate fore
closures, tbn at the same time do away
with the deficiency judgment, and it is
probable that there will be no serious
objection.
