Used Rays that he in a candidate for the) presidential nomination and for that ulooe and that be will not accept the Mcoad place on the ticket Chicago populists will send a double header delegation to the national con vention of that party. All does not ap pear to be harmonious there. It i given out that Cleveland and his cabinet will support the nominee of the fit. Louis convention on a sound money platform rather than the nominee of tlie Chicago convention ou a free silver plat form. A great many democrats all over the country will do the same thing. We learn from tlie World-Herald of Friday, that tbe leaders of the republi cans la the four counties in the west end of this senatorial district met in ex-Judge Bartow's office on tbe 20th and declared that their choice for state senator from this district to be S. Backey of Ains Vforth. We say unien. If this district hbould have the misfortune to elect a republican for this district we believe tbe mantle could tall on no more worthy boulders than those of 8. Backey. He ia a broad and liberal minded man, a deep thinker, a good reasoner, and a man of sterling qualities, and we repeat that if our next senator should be a re publican we hope that one will be B. Backey. Ainawortii Hume Rule, pop). Tbe jury in the trial of Arthur Morri son for the murder of Von Harris at Crawford, occurred at Bushville last week before Judge Grimes, of North Platte. The case was bard fought by both sides and resulted in a verdict of acquittal. The verdict was quite a sur prise to the public as that of tbe first trial was of murder in the first degree, fixing tlie penalty at death, and for a second trial to result in acquittal is cer tainly remarkable. It is reported that relatives of tlte dead have sworn to take Xorriaon's life if tbe law did not and it may be that another tragedy will yet grow out of tbe affair. Some claim that there are too many candidates for state office in tlie sixth district to allow any of them to secure a place on the ticket. That is a wrong view to take of the caae. George A. Eckles, of Dawes county, in his candi dacy for auditor is the only man in the western half of tlie state. The sixth dis trict extends more than three-fifths of the distance across the state and Broken Bow, the home of Jewel t, and Lexing ton, where MacColl resides, are both in the eastern half of tlie state. The west half of the state has been left largely to drooth. populism and U. O. Stewart and if tbe eastern half will tse actta the - hoc lettK saougn to nominate Eckles it wUI Increase the republican vote in this art of the state and help to redeem it Iron the blight of populism. The Graphic is pleased to note tlie kind notices appearing now in the news paper of the fitness of H. Backey of Aias worth to fill the position of senator from the Mth district- Mr. Backey is ot seeking this honor, and that fact Joan convinces us that the people want him. He is as able, honest awl upright yea tie man, and as this teems to be a year in which the people are going to take a hand ia politics, it ia no wonder to ne that they have picked on Mr. Eaoawy from our sinter district. Just as aaaa as the rsMbiicans commence to i np such moo ss be for office, just i ssisats marks tbe brctoning of r- pMkmm supremacy. By all means flee Hr. Eacaojr tbe awmisaUioe, and the tSwtMsj returns will show ose bright sty sf risahlhsn swsshws it) the eorth 3 Artfs- Qrrjhic, Tl.e proceeding of the twenty-fourth annual session of the Nebraska Prea Association U before us and is a finely executed job of printing and the York IlrpuUUiiH is to be congratulated ac cordingly. The republicans will meet in St. Louis on next Tuesday to nominate William M Kiuley for president and to transact such other business as may properly come before the convention. By reason of a promotion F. W. Smith goes from Alliance to Lincoln. By this northwest Nebraska loses one of the best republic!) workers it had. As member of the state -ntral committee in tbe last campaign he did excellent service. In tlie case of the man, Barker, of Crawford, of which mention was made in these columns last week, an informa tion with live counts was tiled ugainst him and bis bond lived at foOO, in de fault of which he went to jail. He will be tried in Julv. The state board of equalization has equalized the assessment of the railroad. telegraph and sleeping car companies fur tlie year. The average assessed valua tion of the railroads jier mile is$4,.Vr7.28. The B. &. M. is assessed nt $1,000 per mile more than any other road. The total of the above interests in, Nebraska is assessed at :872,809.3i" And yet there are a great many people who con tend that tbe railroad representatives should not take part in politics. Judge Kinkaid will be the republican nominee for congress in this dist. ict this fall and that's tlie "end on it." The con vention will be composed of 177 dele gates; 58 of these will come from the judges s district; it will require t9 to nominate, leaving the judge but 81 votes short in his own district. But Mr. Kinkaid is not a candidate of tlie fif teenth judicial district alone; he is the choice of the great majority of the peo ple of the entire congressional district and he will be nominated ou the second formal ballot. The lirst formal ballot will, we llgure, be devoted to giving complimentary votes to favorite sons. O'Neill Frontier. The judications are that at the repub lican state convention Attorney General Churchill will be accorded the nomina tion for a second term, notwithstanding the fact tliat Omaha endorsed two other aspirants for state office and turned Churchill down. Such an act would be wholly proper, as all the other one-term republicans will be re-nominated without opposition, (unless it should come from Omaha) and as all have given to the state good service they are entitled to a second term, lhe republicans 01 Omaha had no good reason for their ac tion in regard to Churchill, neither can they hope to win with two candidates. Tlie Valentine Republican lias worked itself up to fever heat on account of the discussion of the political situation by a few republicans at Chadron. The editor of that paper lias evidently got a wrong idea of what transpired, It was simply an informal sizing up of tlie situation in general and in the interest of no one in particular. No organization was made, no promises or pledges were asUed or given. On the senatorial question io quiry was made if any of the west end counties had aspirants for the Domina tion and none had been heard of. Syver Backey, of Ainsworth had been brought out by his home people and some of those present who knew him said he was a good, available man. No seal of ap probation was placed on him or any oth er man. Those who were present at the meeting simply seek republican success and if the republicans of Cherry county, or any other county in the district, have a man wIk would prove a stronger can didate than Backey, let them trot him out. The Brown county man has no cinch on the nomination. The senti ment seems to be tliat the nomination should go to some one of tlie counties east of Sheridan, and that the very strongest man should be selected, and tbe fact that no ma n in the west end seeks the place is pod proof of such sen timent. If the editor of the Rrpubltcan and the republicans of the eastern coun ties of the district show the same unself ish desire for the success of the party as was evinced at the gathering- to which he takes exceptions northwest Nebraska will represented by a republican senator at the next session of the legislature.
