A favorable report has lieen mane hy
the congressional committee having it in
charge on the bill providing for the elec
tion of United States senators by the
vote of the people. Time and asain the
legislative elections have lieen conducted
with more referem-e to the senatorial
matter thnn anything elseund repeatedly
all legislition has lieen blinked for
weeks or months by senatorial contests,
and blooilslied narrowly averted, as was
the case in Kentucky recently. For the
people to elect U. S. senators at the
polls would meet with the approval of
the masses.

The free-silver faction of Nebnisk.1
democrats has based its call for a state
convention on the vo e cast in l"9i for
W. J. Bryan lor United States senator.
At the rate of one delegate for each 100
votes cast for him there will lie 813
I voles in the convention. The iKipulist
votes counted just the sail)'! as the dem
ocratic votes here and this is one reason
why the delegate elected by this con
vention will not lie seated at Chicago.
If the representation in the state con
vention had lieen Imsed on tlie vote for
Plielps last fall the convention would
contain only about 5 votes instead of f13.
The votes of the free-silver wing last
fall will lie counted in the make-up of
the populist state convention. Fremont
Tribune
On the train 11 ween Crawford and
Chadrmi last week the writer had the
pleasure of renewing his acquaintance
with I. A. Fort, of North Platte. Mr.
Fort is tlie greatest enthusiast on tie
subj.M t of irrigation that Tehrasl;n has
produced, and to his credit he it said that
he is working In the interest of irriga
tion solely, nnd not nursing a political
lioom under the cloak of an irrigate n
hobny. So far does he avoid anvthng
of a political nature in his work that he
does not tell to what party he belongs.
There is no doubt that a roan can nccnni
plish a great deal more under siich con
ditions than is possible for him to do if
seeking to get into i (lice, for, as a rule,
when aucb an one gets into office hia
head swells up and I e has little ue for or
interest in the people who elevated him.
If Mr. Fort cocitinuis in his work and
due not get a political bee In hia bonnet,
he will accomplish much good and die
respected and that i more than ninny
