A move is lieing made for an indus
trial congress to lie held at Kearney in
the spring or early summer to discuss
means and measures to aJv.m -e the wel
fare of the state. It is MiLTtrested that
Nebraska may pattern after Utah in the
matter of co-operation an 1 t!w fostering
of home industries. That is true, but is
much harder to bring about in a state
like Nebraska than in a community con
ditioned as the people of Utah were at
the time when those principles were in
culcated. But be that as it may, an in
dustrial congress would lie a good
tiling.
A few days ago tiie t-enate, by nearly
unanimous vote, passed a concurrent
resolution that the lielligerant rights of
Cuui be recognized by the United Slates.
When news of the action reached Siain
the people of that country became wild
with rage. At Baivelon i the stars and
stripes wer dragged through the streets
an. then turn into shrews, and the resi
dence of tin Auieric.nl consulate was at
tacked and stoned, the coat of arms of
the United Sutes being demolished. Of
course the Spanish government did not j
countenance the acts of violence an! the
authorities did what they could to stop
it, but such grave indignity is not likely
to be allowed to pass by this govern
ment. It seems more probable than
ever that the Cubans will win in their
struggle. The Spanish government at
once called on the representative of the
United Slates and expressed deep regret
ut the acts of the mob. The house of
representatives erithusiasticly puss d the
same resolution as did the senate and it
is more than likely that ccfore this time
the president has attached his name to
the document. It is hardly likely that
war w ill grow out of the episode.
The Kearney Hub devotes cons dertible
spae to urging that the republican nom
inee for governor be selected from the
western part of the staue, and that it is
doing so in good faith and not in the in
terest of a favorite aspirant is evidenced
by the fact that a number of good men
are suggested, among whom are A. E.
Cady, J. T. Mallilieii and others of that
class. That the eastern part of the state
has been inclined to "Ing" everything in
a political way is apparent to all, and
when the people of the western part ol
the state became despondent by reason
of crop failures, and men who had al
ways been republicans were beguiled by
the smooth premises of the populist pro
moter and followed after new and
strange political gods, the republican
leaders seem to have decided on the un
wise policy of claiming everything in
reach for the east and letting the west
have nothing. It is good politics in
making up a ticket to select men as can
didates wnuse personality and location
will add slreuglh to the ticket. The se
lection of the canJidate for governor
from the western part of the state by
the republican stale convention would
show that the object of the leaden was
not simply a scramble lor supremacy of
tlie stronger over the weaker, hut an
abiding faith that the principles of the
republican party are for the best inter
ests of the people and that republicans
all oyer the slate are willing to yield a
point to insure success. Such a course
would arouse the republicans of the west
to new elf oris and brin back ninny wnn
