Terrible forest fires hav been raging
in Wisconsin anJ it is imiossibIrf to
check tlwm unless rain fulls. The. con
tinued drouth there has made too fire
very destructive.
While the Russian thistle wi" to he
recognized as a great enemy to thti ntata
general opinion seems to be tiiat the law
for its extermination cannot he enforced,
especially in the newer and more sparse
ly settled counties. Senator Stewart
evidently did not figure just uliatthat
committee recommended in the hil.
A short time ago Carnegie raised the
th wages of his men without beiti ask
ed to do so by them and w hen it became
known he was complimented for his
philanthropy. It has develop! since
that his object was to compel other
mills to advance the wages of their em
ployees for he knew that under the con
ditions he could secure an advantage
over hia competitors. The world is full
of Huch philanthropist.
Tlie body of Mrs. Notson and alvi
those of her two children was found in
the river near Omaha a few days ago.
The old story of tier laving been prom
ised a position in the office of the state
miperintendenl ban bevn revived. Supt.
Corbett Hatly denies that he ever made
any promise to the woman and that he
is in no way connected with the case ex
cept by the reports which hate Wen
published. It is an unpleasant affair, no
matter from what point it is viewed.
A good illustration of tlie ungrateful
ness of politics is furnislied by the irriga
tion law and what it provides. In its
passage Senator Akers, of i-tcotts Bluffs
county, was its champion and did as
much or more for the law now in force
than any other man. The law provides
for the appointment of a state engineer
and an assistant. When the time came
.Senator Akers desired to have the place
of state engineer so as to liave supervis
ion of the enforcement of the law. He
was turned down and the place given to
a man from Omaha. The irrigation law-
passed more for the western part of the
state than any other. It was hoped and
supposed that it would be under the
supervision of a western man who knew
something of irrigation, but Omaha
with its usual hoggishness demanded
and got it. Is it any wonder tliat a roar
is frequently heard from the western
part of the state and the vote of western
Nebraska is hard to figure on ?
At 1:13 Tuesday morning death laid
its chilling hand on tlie brow of Walter
Q. Gresham, secretary of state, at hi
home in Washington. There are few
men in the nation who were more wide
ly known than the deceased and he had
hosts of admirers, as he was recognized
as a man of more than ordinary legal
ability. He has filled many honorable
positions, Iiaving made a good record
during the waras a soldier and ollicer
while his record as a judge is of the liest,
In that position I deveIoied more aliili
tv than in aiiv otlier. He was much
talked of as a candidate of the republi
can party a few years ago for president
hut failing injUiat he "mugwumped
during tliej last presidential campaign
and as a reward was given the highest
cabinet position by President Cleveland
His administration of tlie oflice of secre
lary of state was not what was expected
by many and demonstrated the fact that
every lawyer, no matter liow proficient
in that line, cannot be a great states
ian.JDeceased bad been in .or Iiealtl
for some weeks, but no reports were
sent out which indicated that death was
likely to result. His ailment was pleur
isy at first and later pneumonia set in
and he sank rapidly and his last mo
ments were quiet and peaceful. The
nation mourns the loss, not only of a
high official, but of a man who liad
many excellent traits of character and
great ability.
Tliare are two .sides to the decision of
tlie supreme cou.t of tin) nation declar
ing the income tax law unconstitutional.
Mapy are tlie attempts that have been
mad to lie witty over it, but tlie
thoughtful ones Who consider it realize
that it watt a sweeping decision. From
it the indications are that a law of that
character cannot be drafted which will
stand the crucial tests of the courts.
Taking that as true the government has
no authority to devise ways and iiieus
to rata revenue by putting a tax on in
oomw, If it wan simply the manner in
which Uw income tax law was gotten up
or irrefttbwitM in its enactment the de

It is a i man mdeed who tan look

equally as stroi.j,- rvpublicau .aers are

conservatives in the populist party, seem
to favor the careful u of the liat of
the government, while others roar lie-
cause the declaration is not made to fav

evident to the student of the sanation
and that is that an attempt is being made
by one element to detract ..'ntion
from the question of tan If by ! tuning
that the currency question is paramount
thereto. It is some time yet ts.-l.jre an
election will occur in which these ques
tions will be involved so that people
have plenty of time to inform them
selves. TlIK Jot liSAL, is of the (pinion
that the people will settle the matter
rightly if they will but give it tli prop
er attention. Studv all sides o! it and
then follow the lines of honesty and the
result will Ik; such as w ill be fur the

it is a narrow mind which looks at mil
one side of aav important miller.
