The hostilities by Japan against hiiia
have been suspended and the probabili
ties are that peace will soon be cnnclud
ed. Wars of long duration are things of
the pat.
The farmers who see in the develop
ment of the sugar industry the av to the
salvation of a good portion of Nebraska
hare not had their respect for the. gov-
ernor iacreased by his veto of the boun
ty bill.
Nebraska is herielf again. Ruin or
snow fell in liberal quantities all over
tne state last week and the spirits of the
people were greatly elevated thereby.
A good crop year will regain for the
state much of the prestige it lost in
104.
The initial number of the yrthustern

L. Meredith and "Wilbert I- Elswick. is
at hand. It has for its object the ad
vancement oftheagricultur.il interest"
of this part of the state. Long may it

Twelve proposition to amend the con
stitution will be submitted to the voters
of the state as one of the results of the
session of the legislature which is to em
pire tomorrow. Those added to the list of
candidates will certainly make a blanket
lUot necessary.
In the senate when the vote on the
passage of the sugar and chicory bounty
bill over the veto of the governor wa
taken two populists voted for its pas
sage, Crawford, of Holt, and Jeffries of
(rreeley. In the house the bill was on a
slrict party vote of those voting.

In ail probability llie ruJurtioti of
din wry will be greatly stimulated in Ne
braska by the bounty given it by the

bounty are precisely the same as those
governing the sugar bounty. The boun

Chicory is a roit crop easily produced,
well .suited to a dry climate and will
grow readily in nearly all pr.rts of the
state. It yields from six to ten ton- of
roots per acre and this crop will bring at
the factories at least 1Q..10 per ton, or
the factory will not l-e entitled to the
bounty.

chicory industry is one likely to spread j
rapidly throughout the state. It re- j
ijuires little capital to handle til ; bust )
nes and a factory is within the reach of
almost any community in Nebraska
where there may. lie a desire to tet the
practical value of factories and of an in
tensive system of farming.
It is not too much to expect that under
the new law the chicory business will I
iven an impetus tint will mhhi make it
an important industry in this stale.

The reports from Minnesota are that
the ground is the drysst e er known
there at this season of th year. The
farmers have been compelled by the
opening of i spring to put in their .crops,
hut while at work they are continually
enveloped in a perfect cloud of dust.
Willi no fall rains, but little snow dur
ing the winter and no spring rains the
outlook in that state is gloomy.
