Then the old men and chiefs of the weak tribe sued for peace and arranged for a council. While the pipe was being passed around a signal was given and the chiefs of tho strong tribe suddenly sprang up with drawn tomahawks anil murdered every ono of tho chiefs of the smaller tribe. Then tho war was renewed and car ried on until the weak tribe was exter minated. A few moons after tho mas sacre of tho chiefs a fire broke out in the pino forest whero the massacre oc- urred. Tho tiro burned in this spot for eight moons and the ground sunk down outof sight; the fire disappeared, and in its stead appeared a lako. Tho Indians gave the lako a name which moans "lake ofdeajb."
