Some move ought to be made to get the railroad company to provide some way for the watering of stock at the stocR yards at this place. A good many cattle would doubtless be brought here and loaded which now go to other stations on this line or across to some point on the B. & M.; as there is no way for watering a herd here. jg0HHBHey Biehle thinks he ought to be presented with a medal for saving lives as lie saved about a dozen lives last Thursday when the heavy rain caused the water to rais so rapidly in the creeks. He saw a number in danger of drowning and furnished a means of es cape for the adults but there were a number of little ones which could not save themselves so he put them in a stick a'ntl braveiy carried them to a place of safety and thus saved thk entire fam ily of pigs. A very heavy rain visited this local ity last Thursday. The water fell in torrent! and everything was flooded for a while. The rainfall north and north west along the hills was heavier than here and washed out most of the bridges along the roads to the valley. It is a settled fact that it is expensi-fe and un kifactory to try to have roads along the bottom of the canyons and the sooner the roads are got out on the banks tho sooner good and cheap roads will be had1, , By the action of the village clerk no license was Issued for the saloon. Wads worth had put up f 125 and as no license issued the money was returned to him to that the saloon, is now running without a shadow of license. , It is a pwtgiar thing that a minor official ap poinUd by & village board should possess Hwpowarto virtually veto the action btMtl. The poll tax will be about suf ficient to do the earth work so that will complete it all but the bridges and for some reason people appear to be afraid to bid on those. There is nothing to risk but labor as the material to be used is logs and they can be had near at hand at no cost. The whole work will be pushed along as rapidly as possible and it will not be long until the people in tlie valley will have the best road to come to Har rison that they have ever had, Robert Wilson informed us that he bad a valuable colt killed by wolves last week arid another one injured. It is re ported that a good deal of stock is being killed right along by these animals and the low's is a drain on tlie stock raisers. B. F. Johnson says le lost about twenty head of stock from the ravages of the wolves last year and others lost in proportion. Something ought to be done to rid the country of the pests. An attempt was made a year or so ago to organize me stoca umre. and offer rewards for killing wolves, but for some reason it fell through. It would be belter for the stock owners to nav a eood bounty for wolf scalps than to -have them keep fat at tlie expen.se of their herds. The Institute. The teachers' institute opened on Mon-! day, under tlie supervision of Supt. : Southworth with Prof. Leach as in-! struclor. This is the third institute: which Prof. Leach has conducted in Sioux county, so he and his methods are well known. The following is a list of those who i enrolled themselves up to Wednesday noon: Sara Parsons, Anna Price, Alice Thomas, Edith Burson, Fanny Palmer, Don C. Smith, A. H. Pinneo, Lilly Thomas, ! Elma Mason, Belle Russell, i Will IL Davis, B. F. Thomas, Daisy Doane, Fannie Southworth,; Sarah Shaw, Minne Smith, S. L. Ellis, Kittie Daniels, Eveline Miller, Amanda Hill, Mrs, Asa Davis. On Wednesday the following preamble and resolution was adopted: Whereas, The members of the fourth annual institute of Sioux county, Neb., are spending their -time and money to tetter fit themselves for work in the schools of the county and in justice to the schools of said county and to the members of this institute be it ICesolcetl, That the county superintend ent be respectfully requested to refuse to grant certificates to those who do not attend this institute and also to revoke all certificates now in force in Sioux county, the holders OC which do not at tend this institute, unless such persons have a reasonable and valid excuse by reason of sickness or attendance at an institute elsewhere this year. Akna Price, 1 Sara Parsons, J-Com, S, L. Ellis, ) The institute is composed of those edu cators who take an interest in their work and seek to prepare themselves to ac complish as much as possible in the school room and the resolution passed shows that they believe in seeking justice and at the same time elevate the grade of work done. It is an utter im possibility for a person tp keep up with the progressing methods of leaching and not attend some of the in stitutes or normal training schools and County Superintendent Southworth will be working to the interest of the schools of the county by rigidly enforcing the request of the teachers. The work taken up by the institute is of a higher grade than that of former years and the teachers ' who heed what they learn will go into the school room far better prepani! than ever before, The attendance will likely be larger this year than at any former institute in the county. Those in attendance get right down to business and are not there for a good time as is frequently therme. School officers and those intere.-tod in the educa tional work of the county should visit the institute and see what is being done and who is doing it and when the time conies to hire teachers, better judgment can be used than would be possible with out such knowledge.
