The old fetish that woman is the slave of man or that man is "the lord of creation" is inspired by no loftier sentiment than that which would drive the one and not the other as beasts ot burden to the field that the superior sex might enjoy all the fruits of their common husbandry. Jf you expect to make eggs pay, and not keep the ajr-pro-duclng breeds, you will not be so suc cessful Lut which aie the egg-producing breeds. They are those breeds f hat are kept in full exercise, and are I .ot ever-fed, and which are hardy ac cording to the climate. Do not lose sight of that one quality hardiness. The best breed for New England is not tho best breed in Florida. The best breed for confinement is not the best ou the range. Where the winters are cold and long such breeds as the Brahman, Cochins, Plymouth Hocks, Langshans, Wyandottes, and even leghorns, will serve well, and in more moderate climates the Leghorns, Ham burgs, Games lilaek .Spanish and Minorcas will give good results, but in cold climates, with good care, they will also be profitable. The man who finds no money in eggs is the cue who does not improve his stock. Do broilers pay? Yes. for the food ri';uiied to produce one pound of cL'ickeu meat costs only five cents. But something depends on the man. If you rely on the regulator entirely, and export to escape work broilers will not my. You cannot make a hen sit in winter, and she could not raise a brood even if she hatched them. The in cubator is the only hope for early broilers and best prices. Get a small incubator now, and practice, so as to be ready for winter work. Learn the how and the why by practice. Broilers pay well, but they do not pay unless you learn. You can read all the literature you wish, but the best teacher is experi xiice. Make a specialty of eggs the first year, but practice with the incubator, ind you can theu make a specialty of broilers. Ex. lSutter On tlie Farm. Scientific methods are pres cribed for lie factory plan of a dairy, but the average farmer's wife is expected to produce good butter without rule, or any of the facilities which make pos sible a system for a perfect process from the milking, setting, churning, working and salting, but all is uncer tain and haphazard, for better or for worse, as to results. These are matters of importance and every farmer should study them and assist the housewife to bring the dairy methods up to a per- feet syslem. l'ullet'i Kgga. Eggs of a young pullet's are gener nlly longer and more pointed at the smaller end than those laid by the same bird cither later in the season or the uext year. Those early pullets will pro. duce on an average about the propor tion of six cockerels to four pullets Kggs laid early in the season by older hens are also, as a rule perceptibly Ion gcr and more pointed than those laid later in the season. It is well known that cockerels oftener predominate in early broods, and pullets in later ones. Wlicn to Urek the Colt. The ago at which horses should be put to work has nothing to do with the breaking of the colt. The best horse handlers aim to get the colt accustomed to the halter and the hand just as soon as they are straightened up and can stand on their feet The breaking of the colt to be gentlo and easily man aged about the stable is not only quite a convenience wnere tne mother is used in harness, but often prevents iiccidents and injury to the colt. The colt may bo handled, harnessed and broken to the bit before it would Le prudent or safe to put it to work in the team. The age at which horses should be put to work depends a good deal on the size and general temper ment of the ani mal. The draft horses are less liable to strain themselves in getting used to hard work than the smaller, ambitious nervous animals, consequently they may be placed in the team at a younger age and with less liability of injury. The spirited animal should be handled, broken to harness, but not put to tire some, fatiguing labor until it is ma tured. Handle the colts at an early ig. . - Cara of Young Fruit Trees. We should give as close attention to tur young fruit trees as auy other crop If we expect to realize any profit from them. The softening of the ground by rains and the power the wind has against the broad tops of young fruit trees at this time of the year makes it a matter of importance (hat we see after our young trees imraeuiaieiy alter every storm before the ground freezes and straighten all that lean or that have blown over. We have a young apple orchard protected on the north by a forest but the western winds every Fall blow soira fit the joung trees over, es pecially it the ground has been well .ultivated. Our plan Is U push the young trees bazk in posilio.t while the (round ia still wet, pull up the largest corn stubble we can find, place the root nd against the tree, stamp it tight with the foot, then throw a lew shovel fulls of dirt on the com stubble to hold it firm. They seldom blow over the second time. One advantage with sheep is that Iheywiil pick up a good living in places where cattle would nearly tarre. Mae? iaVsaaVaav A well kept win shear a fleece thai, a peer!) iept ne. If you have sheep that are old fatten and Liaiket them. A sh;p that shears only four or fiTe k.u;,ds of wool barely pays expenses. One advantage with a small flk Is that the owner can give them better attention. E-ves that are suckling lambs should be fed a little longer than tho other sheep. The sheep that shears a good fleece and furnishes a fine carcass is the kind to raisy. A ewe that is thin and poor and is allowed to run down in condition rarely raises, a good lamb. For the small farmer, sheep are not only suitable, but with good manage ment can be made a very profitable stock. Poultry Picking!. Do not use coal oil for lice on chicks. Manure piles are good for gapes in chickens. Whenever a rooster's comb falls over he has bad health. Ducks can stand out in a hard rain, but dampness induces cramps. As the weather becomes warmer care must bo taken in shipping not to crowd. Chickens should not be allowed to run with the old hens alter they are full feathered. It is often a good plau to put tho hen with a brood of chickens in the garden, confining the hen in a coop; the chick- ens will destroy numbers of insects. It is only in exceptional cases that a turkey can be induced to lay in a poultry house, they prefer to steal nests out and ranst be watched or a consid erable number of eggs will be lost. Dairy Oola. The cow wants to see an improved breed of dairymen established. If you don't own a dairy of 400-pound butter cows don't be discouraged. Test each one, know what she can do, con demn the poorest to sacrifice, when it will damage you the least, breed to blooded bulls of excellent practical merit and save the best cows' calves. Ihree or four years will find you look ing up smiling. How To Wash A Fowl, Washing is so simple and so easy, and yet so many spoil their birds by only half carrying out the operation. They fear that they may damage the plumage or wet it too much, or that they may be unable to get the eoap out or to dry perfectly the feathers, and thus scores of birds are ruined in ap pearance by only partially cleansing when it would have been better to have left them untouched. Birds should be washed two or three days before wanted for show, and our favorite fime for tubbing is whon th6 sun sets; then the birds are more docilf) and likely to be quiet. Testing Love. Southern children have a very pretty way of Helling fortunes" with tho dod der vine or love vine, as thoy call it. A piece is broken off and twisted around the head three times, then dropped oc a bank behind them. If the sweetheart is true it grows. If it dies, he or she if false The mullen stalk is also used to learn the constancy or the fickleness of the lover. The stalk is broked, but not de tached, and if it continues to grow the absent one is constant, or vice versa. -New York world. Cor Forest and Stream. Eggs are gathered by hucksters, who in turn sell them to what the dealers refer to as the shippers, by whom they are sent to New York. After the eggs get here they are again handled by the commission merchants, and finally they reach the grocer, who disposes of them to the consumers. New York Lveninp Sun. The fastest cooking, authentically Attested, was done not long ago by Prince Bismark s former chief, who is dow chief cook in a famious restaurant of Berlin. He bad made a bet with a regular guest of the place that he eould kill, dress, cook and serve a thicken in six minutes. The exploit was to be performed before invited spectators. At nine o'clock on the appointed evening the cook appeared with his gas cooking stove on a platform in sight of all in the room. He waved the chicken around his head and it cackled loudly. Decapitating the fowl with one blow of a glittering knife, this gastronomic expert within sixty seconds had removed every feather from it. The gas stove was already lighted, with a broiler upon it. The fowl wajcut open and drawn in one other minute and placed upon the broiler; a hot dish garnished with watercress was at hand, and it lacked just a second of the six minutes when the chicken was served.. The funds for its maintenance are provided by those who wish to show respect for deceased friends otherwise than by expending money on costly funeral flowers. The "Rose of virtue" recently con ferred by the pope upon the queen of Portugal, is properly supposed to bring misfortune to the recipient of the honor, and this queen is no exception to the rule. Trout Fi.hlug at Night. Do trout feed in the night during the full moon? In answer I would say no. Can you catch them better during the full moon? To this I would also say no. The best time to eaten them at night is early in the evening before . the moon rises, or after it sets in the morning. Only in the darkest night do trout bite best. As an outgrowth of the labors ot IJiss Grace Dodge lunch clubs are being established in many quarters in the immediately neighborhood of factories, where the girls can procure wholesome food at reasonable rates It is not possible for these to be self supporting at the very start, but as soon as they are so the association turns over the management to a com mittee of the girls themselves. In a a few of these, besides the lunch room proper, there is a cheerluf sitting room in which are found books, lounce i rockingchair3 and perhaps a piano. The most novel thing in this line is the step which has recently been taken by a large Boston dry goods establishment that of providing a hall and a piano for the recreation of their employees. Two teachers of gymnastics have been engaged, and between the hours of 5 and 6 p. m. the girls are relieved from duty in classes to enjoy the exercises. This is doubt less a means of making the store exceedingly popular, for there are many women who would give the preference in buying to a store which took such practical ways of making it3 employees happy. Clothier, of Boston, who for five years has been actively en gaged in the work of the young wom en of the Women's Christian Temper ance union, and also in the Young Peo ple's Society of Christian Endeavor and the King's Daughters throughout the country, has undertaken the added work of providing a "rest" for young women. She has secured a cottage at Manitou Springs, Colo., and will invite those young women who from force of cir cumstane.es cannot afford to take needed rest for brain and body. Her idea is not a cheap boarding place or sanitarium, but a real home, where she will entertain from twelve to fourteer guests at a time. Miss Clothier asked those who are in terested in this need among the class of young women who are brain workers and who are dependent upon their own exertions for their support to aid in providing this rest. If sufficient funds are secured nearly 200 young women can thus have two or three weeks' rest among the Rockies. Mrs. Livermore is in hearty sympa. thy with the work. Boston Letter.
