The South Needs n History. Inter Ocean. The Columbia, Tenn., Ixiily Jlnvhl has tins to say: The vouth of this sunny land need and need badly a United States history that will sjieak the truth. One that will not give all the facts on one side and all the hes on the other. One tliat will not , The contest for the nomination on the , .-epubliean ticket for congiessv.t in the big sixth appears to have narrowed down to Dorrington and Whitehead. With that condition of affairs the preliminary canvass can made in such a manner that there will be no sores to heal after the convention, and the candidates are such that it will lie no disgrace to either should he fail to get the requisite num ber of votes, and there will be no reason '.why the defeated aspirant, which ever it be, and his supporters cannot give his more fortunate competitor a strong and yordial support. With that kind of a feeling all over the district there will 1 no question as to the election of the re publican nominee and the result will be that the political accident which is now , drawing his salary of 5,000 a year will have an opportunity to again put in his .time in Custer countv. the American market to European manufacturers, to bring the currency of the countv to the single silver standard n,iiA.,ivanlnnri.ii,iwllv. will suiiiiort sneak of the battle ol Hull Hun as a .., ,uw.meV. v hile such as would friendly barbecue where a neighborly row u,c Uc.,.s.i.u , . cotten up and "the rederal force revolutionize the linancial system ol uie I ,: , , renutd." and of Cettvs- countrv by issuing an endless volume of I inirg as a bloody plain where the "Union paper currency which would drive out forces routed the rebels with terrillc all coin and eventuate in inevitable dis- slaughter," but in the langoage of the an com oath administered in our courts, "the aster to all interests, reducing the gov- u.ull lne wnole lmth ,ling jjllt eminent and the people to a common n,e truth." A man had a farm in the eastern part of the state on which .there was some timber. Ha had given .a mortgage on the place and the mort gagee sought to prevent hira from cut ting the timber thereon. At the hearing ;in court it was shown that the land was .worth $35 per acre. Judge Dundy in quired as to the assessment and was in formed that it was assessed at $3.50 per .acre, If land is worth 35 per acre it .should be assessed at that rate and if all property was listed at its real value the itaxes would be no higher. A great cry .is raised about the indebtedness being .about half as much as the assessed valu ation and on the face it makes a bad .showing, but when it is considered that .the assessment is only about one-twelfth ,of the real value it gives quite a differ ent color to the matter. and the patriotism of the American ieo ple. It has faithfully kept its pledges to the country, and it is able to point to re sults which splendidly attest the wisdom of its jrolicy. Under its administration of the government established industries have increased and new ones have been created; foreign and internal commerce has been greatly enlarged; the finances of the country have been free from dis turbance and its currency has remained stable, the dollar of the farmer and the workir.gman being as good today as it was three years ago; the international relations of the government have been conducted with an ability, skill and firm ness which have reflected honor upon the nation and elevated it in the res)iect of the world, With this record the re publican party will go into the contest of 1892 earnestly, aggressively and fear lessly, confidently relying fur an en dorsement of its acts upon the intelligent judgement, the progressive spirit, and the patriotic impulses of the American people. Heath, with being a candidate for re-election to the Nebraska legislature .and some of them have spoken kindly of '.us in this connection. We duly appreci ate the good things said of us, the same '.as all people do, Jbut we wish to state '.that, we are not a candidate for any .olHce, and will not be. Financially, we nan imt afford to be a candidate for the '.legislature. As a rule, when men begin fittltw thev do not know when to .quit, but its different with the editor of ithe Standard. We kno when we have onono-h of anv rood thing. Our time in h. r.itiira will be devoted to the Stand firi and farming, and our advice to our ibov will be: "Never run for office; be ihonest" The above is from Mr. Heath's paper. (the Rushville Standard, and settles the o ues tion as to his Candidacy. He made good representative, triving his best Efforts to his work and many would like ,to see him re-elected, but Mr. Heath evi Bills have been introduced in both branches of congress for liberal appro priations for exeriments in producin rain in Kansas, Nebraska and South Da kota and every indication points to their passage. Scientists are firm in the belief that rain can be pro duced by artificial means and experi ments will be kept up by the govern ment until the work is an established fact. The confidence of Melbourne and those who have witnessed his production of rain causes the belief in rain pro ducing to be quite general and taking all together it means a great deal for the agricultural districts of the entire .country, hildren being taught at a school his money suptiorts that the sod in Virginia covered the grave of a traitor, and the Tennessee at Shiloh Hows by the un known resting place of a destroyer of constitutional liberty. He can stand the pensions, the war tariir and political ostracism, but not the desecration of his own fireside. The South needs a history. What the Houth needs is a history that shall inform its youth and remind its older readers that certain States ODce made an attempt to dissolve the Union, and that in pursuance of their plan they raised troops which they called the "army of the Confederate States of America;" that the Nation never recog nized the existence of any Confederate States, nor did any foreign power; that the armies of the so-called Confederate States were regarded as roiters or reliels by the government of the Nation; that they were fought and beaten by the armies of the Nation until they were glad to make "unconditional surrender." They should further be taught that, now that they are admitted to citizenship, it is the interest, as well as the duly, of the people living in the South to live peaceably and to obey all the laws, and to conform to all the provisions of the Constitution of the Nation, I'.oaiui i.k ( .imiis-(im:i:s: John A.
