' The anniversary of the birth of Mrs. Glasner occurred on Christmas and she was presented with a handsome album and a cup and saucer by her friends. II. T. Mernam brought Us a nice piei-e of pork last .Saturday. Some peo ple have a very happy faculty of doing the right thing at the right time and Mr. M'Triam seems so gifted. A good many of the farmers are put ting in the winter logging and will use the lumber to improve their farms. That is something the settlers in the east part of the state could not do. Note the report of the crop raised this year by Commissioner Grove as re porled in another column. A soil that will yield like that will not long he va cant after people find out that it can be had for simply living on it. sending the compliments of e sea-Kin to vour mend in the east do not forget to tell them that there is still room for S,OO0 homesteaders in Sioux county, each of whom can get 100 acres of free government land, Dr. Sliafer reported the arrival or a line 10-pound girl at the home of George Olinger on Tuesday morning. Mother and daughter are doing well, but George carries his head so high that he has to stoop to get through an ordinary door. V' -iThe death of the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis ltickard, of Bodarc, the first of the week is reported. She was about thirteen years old. It is also stated that Mr. ltickard is sick, but we have been unable to learn the particulars. The sympathy of the community is extended to til stricken family, Word was received yesterday that the mill man had not yet completed his arrangements in regard to the machinery and that as soon as he has finished that he will come here prepared to stay and go to work on the mill. He is a man of family and will be quite an acquisition to the town. It is expected that he will be here in a few days. The fact that Mr. and Mrs. S. L. R. Maine and Miss Eva Conner were to leave for California the first of the week af forded an opportunity for a little sur prise to he perpetrated on them. A number of their friends gathered by ti fi-peinent at the home of U C. James son ' on last -Saturday evening and then Mr. and ' Mrs. Maine and Miss Connor were sent for and a pleasant so cial evening spent, at the close of which the guests departed after extending best wishes tt) those 80 soon to leave to seek a new location. Early action should be taken by th? managers of the agricultural society m the matter of securing grounds so that a track may be fitted up. A good track will lie the cause of bringing a number r i,r. he for training and will help 'to bring a good lot of horses here for the fair. The farmers like to bring ineir rin.fl. horses, cattle, sheep and farm pro- ,ii,in the faiK Mid they also enjoy a good exhibition of speed on the track, K"r'""" ' . and informed us thai he was mad but not as mad as had boon a few minutes previous. Daumgard's two sons from Kan sas, arrived home one day last week. Miss Annie Henry who has been at the rort for some time has been very sick but was better at last reiiort. r. W. Knott is now settled on his homestead and ready to entertain his friends if they will but call that way Storm I'rophet Hicks says we are to have an abundance of rain during the spring months, so let our farmers pre pare to sow a large acreage of small grain. Christmas las come and gone once more, and on account of the storm Christmas eve (nidging by our expen- ni-e) there were a good many disap pointed people. But we are very glad Old Santa seldom stops for cold or storm, so the little people can always have a merry Christmas, no difference what the weather may lie, if their parents are willing to make it so. Rnfus Woody came home Christmas, also Misses Lulu and Rose who have been attending the Academy at Chadron since last September. The girls are highly rdeased with the school. Mr. and Mrs, Lock wood were also at her fathei's, so the family were all together on Christ mas, excentinir two sons. These family irafheririirs seem like a Dart of Christ- mas and happy are the families that can lm so united. JOU lYUniillU Will Uiivci iviuuu a.a i much territory in a day as any one we know of. For instance: last Saturday he took the mail to Harrison and got back to Montrose before five o'clock; then then traveled about twenty miles to get l.lu Lout oii-l nnrl fnlrfi her to a dance, and we stuioose he danced till morning, but hntro nnt. l);l.rd when he took his trirl home but he surelv would be excuseable if lie took all the next day to it. By carefully counting the storm days from the forecasts of six astronomers it L'ives us nearly all storm days for Janu ary, so look out for bad weather and pre pare to be "at home. The dance at Wasserburger's Saturday nield, was a errand success. There was a -o j big crowd, a fine supper and the best of mnif Li riO, Reported From Cottonwood The Dove threshing machine completed its work for the season on Tuesday The literary society of Little Cotton wood is in a flourishing condition. A new trirl arrived at the home of John Sneas on the 20th inst, which tipped the beam at 10 pounds. Commissioner Grove finished his lu.hmi' a few divs aero and is a fair i.mle of this locality as a grain grow inir country.
