John Ci Watson, chairman of the republican slate central committee, has expressed his determination to call the committee together for the purpose of considering the question of placing a candidate for governor iu the field at the coming election. Many leading lawyers express the opinion freely that a govern or cannot be elected this year under the provisions of the constitution, and con sider it au attempt on the part of Mr. Watson to involve the office of governor in more trouble simply because he "has it in" for Ooveror Thayer because lie would not appoint Watson to the posi tion of judge-advocale-general. It is not likely that the stuto central committee will aliow itself to be made a party to any such scheme just to please the ( hair- man. The supreme court decided that Thayer should hold over and the case has gone to the supreme court of the United States, where it will be finally adjudicated and there is no occasion to create further complications in the matter.
