P. Davis made no fight for tlie nomination be received from himself, his partner and seven others. Tfiere was no m for him to liiit with for no other attorney who is not an out and out demo crat would have accepted the nomination at tlie hands of tlie outfit. It was a case -f Iiopkin's choice: "That or nothing-.'' One of the neatest things in the line of -a souvenir that we have seen was receiv ed at this office a few days ago with tlie compliments of the Sioux City Corn Pal ce. It is an imitation of an ear of corn 4nsid of which is an announcement of ttbe opening and an invitation to attend. On the 23d inst. Congressman Connell, of tbe first district, was re-nominated unanimously by acclamation. It is Vident that the people of that district are pleased with the work of their repre Mutative in congress, and a republican , victory ia that district is assured. The fusion-gang organ says tlflit u. P. Dsvvis has well sustained the party. The editor of that organ, when he speaks of nataiajay the party, evidently refers to the time when J. P. uavis withdrew as tfaa aooninee of the republicans for coun ty attorney, ia favor of E. u. Satterlee, the democratic nominee for that office, wad also to the time at Hastings about a year ago when U. P. Davis made the atatemsot to the state central committee Urn be believed E. U Satterlee to be a tepabhean. That is the way he has sus- I the party. The voters of Sioux raaaibar those things and the NoTambat 4th will show that dmy bare ao use for any one. who will pmnarm ay audi acts. Tie refwrt that J. 'V. The phial of tins Gordon R puUiixn, has been purvliased by S. 8. Muqihy and its now used in issuing a new paper tulltd the Gordon Iultjx ml nt. The new pa per is to lie what its name indicates, in dependent in all tiling. A r)unilr of papers ot this class have lie?n started in Nebraska of late. In view of the fai t that tlie value of steel nils imported into the United States in the year ending June 30, l'vSo was only $1534,113, while the value of beans imported the sanre year was ?7i!)( O'.i, tlie Sioux City Journal expresses the opinion that the; man who says agri cultural interests do not need protection "doesit know Ije.ms." llie gui orpn says it has shown up a part af Conley's acts since he came here and several chapters jet remain unpriut ed. Neither tlie g-.in; nor its oran has shown up one act f H. T. The Santa Fe railroad has au eye t-j business. The settlers of Oklahoma lidded seed n heat and did not have the money to purchase it. The railroad peo ple realized that many would have to leave the territory unless assisted. They did not flg-ure on the freight at present, but on futures, and are furnishing tin settlers with 110,000.00 worth of seed wheat to be put into the ground this fall, it is needless to say that they will get big returns in freight paid next full by the Tarniers, and it will likely be some time before the settlers will attempt to get a competing line of road. A liberal policy on the part uf a railroad will do a great dual toward getting the country settled up. The Congressional Convention. The result of the preliminary canvass of the congressional campaign terminat ed at Columbus on the 17th inst. by the re-nomination of . Dorsey. That gentle man came home from Washington a short time before and opened headquar ters on one of the main streets of Fre mont and he and his. friends went, to making a vigorous light for the delega tion from iodge couiity. Those oposed to Mr L'orsey decided not to make a fight for delegates and the result was that the county convention was olmost a solid one for Dorsey. From Sioux county, C. E. Holmes went as proxy for Eli Smith and Grant Guthrie and V. P. Davis and E. (r. Hough went down to represent the fu-sioo-ring outfit. On his arrival tin .-re, Mr. Holinos learned that it had been ar ranged that the gang outfit were to be seated and he decided that he would not make any fight to be seated. Tlie llir aid stales that on the recommendation of Messrs. Da'is and Hough, Mr. Holmes was seated as the third delegate, but Mr. Holmes knew of no such recommendation and he did not oc cupy the seat of the third delegate from Sioux county and did not participate in the deliberations of the convention. Tlie.' convention is, reported as having been largely composed of federal ap pointees, and tliat of the 230 votes re ceived by Mr. Dorsey, one-half came from those holding oil ice by his appoint ment, and in many cases the votes for him were in direct opposition to the sen timents of the localities they represent ed. If the arrangement had been made some time ago to seat tlie gang outfit from Sioux county, regardless of the merits of the case it is safe to presume that Mr. Dorsey was carrying matters with a pretty high hand, and if the votes for him in other counties were as direct ly opposed to the wishes of the masses as were those from this county it ia not to be wondered at that the general idea of Dorsey bossisin in tlie way of fed eral appointments was nsed for all it was worth, and that there is great dis satisfaction expressed at the result ( the convention. It is to le regretted that at a time when the party is in the position it is at present that a more m ceptabie choice could not have been made.
