A North Carolinian recently engaged in making moonshine whiskey in the south part of Gage county, near the Kansas line. It was a largestill( having a capacity of 1,800 gallons per month, and had only been in oeration about two weeks before it was spotted by the internal revenue officers and gathered in. Deputy Collector Kerr, assisted by W. L. Hall, did the work in the case ad are entitled to credit for their alertness. The operator has not yet been apprehended, but the U. S. marshal will lookafterhim, edgementof his worth. It is to lie hoped that he will be as satisfactory to the jieople along his lines as was his pre decessor une oi our iom reporters tells us that a Pine Ridge agency Indian gave one of our citizens a sound "drubbing" one evening this week. It seems that tlie citir-en was devoting too much at tention to a dusky maiden a little half- breed and Mr. Indian proposed to teach his pale-face brother better manners, and he went about it in a systematical way. ne nrsi nucmxi up nis team and trot in readiness to start for Pine Ridge agency, then getting another Indian to hold his team, he "lit down" on Mr. Citizen in regular Sullivan style. As soon as he had finished the little job in good style he jumped into his wagon and left for home. This little affair is the best evi dence of civilization among the Indians that we have heard of for a long time Ruahvrue Standard. Washington Letter. "Washington, Nov, 2, In the speakership light, sectionalism lias overcome every regard for the er- sonal qualifications in selcctimr a parlia mentary leader by looking into his head rather tlian his post office address, has been thrown to the wind. If this course is allowed to govern tlie caucus it is as likely as not that the next speaker of the House will be as weak a presiding of ficer as was tlie monumental Keifer of Ohio. It is easily understood that the speakership of the Fifty-first Concress will prove no sinecure. Tlie two parties in tlie house are nearly etiual in strenirth and the avoidance of wrangfes and dead locks will call for all the abilitv availa ble. The work of the session will be most arduous. After the conflict over the adoption of the new rules which will lie inevitably of the warmest and most harassing nature has been concluded, tht tariff will be dragged into the arena. the henate Hill will be only a ball for the House cat to play with, and the buf feting it will receive will continue for weeks. A national bankrupt law. a na tional education law, a national election law and other national laws galore, are a few of the ghosts that will sit at the banquet of the successful candidate. Congressmen Tie selection of Reed as speaker of tlie lower house of congress meets with gen eral approval, although it was desired by tlie west that a western man lw chosen. Major McKinley, of Ohio, will oe cnairman or the committee on way and means, that being the most imtwr- taut position in tlie gift of tlie speaker. This will place tliat gentleman ill a - sition where he can render excellent ner vice, and still leave him on the floor of the house wliere he wields a great influ ence. 31r. Keed is working closely to Uie administration and tlie commitws appointed by him will be made tip so as to oest carry out the policy of the Har rison administration. One thin? is no ticeable thus far since the republicans re gained control of the machinery of the government and tliat is tliat Benjamin Harrison is president, and tliat he has some excellent help around liim. Warden Hopkins recently made a strike in the re-capture of Harry Hall who escaped from the penitentiary alwut two years ago. He was sentenced to spend his life in the en for killing a man in Cheyenne county during a oimr- rel. He was made private mvrpfii-u k. Warden Nobes and retained in that no- , . i suion ny w arden Hyers. An attempt was made to secure a pardon for him. but that failing, he took advantage of tlie liberty allowed him by the prison of- hcialsand made a break for lihertv. Warden Hopkins has followed the man. by means known to detectives, all over the western part of the Uuited States and at last quietly dropjied on his man somewhere in Utah. HOLIDAY GOODS! Knmi rf liUU traveling public express themselves as drive from the railway station in tar intending in future to change at Craw- nages to fashionable residences and ho ford and go east over the B. & JL asthat te'K. and others trudge, cheap erin and line runs passenger trains, with sleepers attached, so that a trip is much more pleasant. It is evident that the Elkhorn people will be forced to put on passenger service in order to hold their share of the business from the west. It takes a good while sometimes for a railroad company to get their eyes open to such matters, but as a rule they get around to it after a while and then do better than their competitors in order to make amends for previous shortcomings. It is to be hoped that it will not be lone until the Elkhorn people will see that it is to their interest to put better train service on this line. The amount of travel would no doubt be greatly in creased, for an it is at present no one makes a trip unless it is absolutely ne cessary for them to do so, Some of the papers in the eastern part of this congressional district have men tioned Hon. Loran Clark for the govern 'or candidacy next fall It is questiona ble whether such candidacy would be advisable. It is pretty well understood that Dodge county wil have a candidate for that position and a great many have already expressed themselves as favora- 'Me to Uie image county man, although - Mr. Richards has not stated that he is in the Be Id, but the course pursued by his 'friends has been such that there is little question in regard to the matter. Mr. (stark is a good man and one for whom 'we have very warm friendship, having 'tnown him for several years, but it is historical fact that the North Platte ' country" has not always sot what it -justly entitled to at the hands of the state convention simply on account of division among the delegates from this 'district, and it is to be hoped that no er rors will be made whereby all the non et's will go to tbe South Platte part of ; the state. Candidates for governor are springing up all over the south and east part of the state and the result will be a division of strength on the ' nominee for chief executive among the delegates from that section and if the north Platte 'stands solidly for a man for that office there is no reason why bis nomination cannot be secured. Mr. Clark has bean honored with the nomination for one state office, sad although he was defeat ed, it Was by ths action of those who ought to have stood by him, he has to occasion to feel disgraced for no man can suocsssfnlly fight eneaaies secreted in tlM caws of his friends.
