Progress is a literal translation from the
Freuch of a work entitled Ye Film-image

Tille, a monk of the fifteenth century, a

copy of the original French manuscript

worth while to search for it, in order
that tL question may be decided. If

A Palm VUw of Hosts u
The following strange story was re
lated to us by the mate of a merchant
vessel, personally known by us to be a
gentleman of the highest character and
reliability and mav be of interest to stu
dent of psychology. While hi ship
was loading at Calcutta, he accepted the
invitation of a native to visit his home.
The native was a peddler of the lowest
class and previously unknown to the
officer. On arriving at the hovel of the
Hindn. he introduced bis father, an
emaciated old man of great age, but
with niercinclv brilliant eyes. After
trreetins the voting American a few min
tites he commanded him to look into the
palm of his hand. Although at first un
willing to comply with the request, he
felt himself constrained to do so. and.
on looking down, saw before him in his
hand a perfect vision of a room in his
distant New England home, with the
different mombers of the family seated
aronnd a table. Although a man of iron
nerves, our friend confessed that it was
some time before he recovered his equa
nimity. We forbear to comment on this
incident, only remarking that it seems
better authenticated than most similar
stories. Popular Science News.
A Photographic I'mplre.
The followine proposition, ncoording
to the Photoraplnsche Archiv, has
been mado bv a professor and teacher
of thn Koyal Photographic school of-
Vienna. It is to apply photography in
deciding races in which the result may
be doubtful. In place of the decision
of tho judge, who may err sometimes,
it is proposed to accept the unfailing
dictum of tho camera. For this purpose
six cameras are to be placed in line at
tho winning post, a low feet apart, and
directed toward tho race course, Mhich
may be exposed simultaneously by the
ency of electricity. as soon as
tho leading horso reaches the first
camera all tho cameras are exposed.
Tho plates may bo developed Hi from
two to throe minutes, and the result will
unmistakably show which horso is the
actual winner.
Polsoo Conveyed r tho Toeth.
The noiaon conveyed by the hnmnn
teeth is found by physicians to be one of
the most troublesome they have to deal
with. One of them writes: "1 have un
der my attention severe and most com
plicated oases of blood-poisoning, in
which the patient had but slightly
abraided the hand in the course of a
fight by striking the knuckles against
the teeth of his opponent I have known
bands thus poisoned only saved from
amputation by the application of all re
sources of science. Tobacco or whisky or
derangement of the stomach from any
other causes may be responsible for this
poison ons condition of the teeth, and 1
am not prepared to ey that a man with
good health and a clean, sweet mouui
would not convey the poison."

Tho Swedish colony in Brooklyn is
growing larger every year, and that tho
city benefits by tho acquisition is a self
evident fact. The Swedes are frugal
and law abiding, and in n short time be
come good citizens. They live princi
pally on Atlantic, avenno, between Court
and'Smith streets, and in adjacent thor
oughfares, and many of them own and
successfully run small shops aud saloons.
With housewives Swedish servants have
always been popular, and I am told that
tho supply falls far short of the demand
for them. The Swedish domestic never
comes to this country unless she has
previously mado some arrangement for
obtaining work immediately on her nr-
rival. or unless she has friends with
whom she can stay. Tho result is that
Swedish "help" is engaged before it
reaches America, and consequently ser
vants of this nationality are hard to ob
tain. Brooklyn Eagle.
