There are many passages which speak of death as a sleep. 'And many of them that sleep in the dust of tho earth shall . awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and ever lasting contempt." Dan. ,12:2. "And the Iord said unto Mo ses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers :" etc. Deut. 31 ; 10, "So David slept with bisfath- ers, and was buried in the city of David." livings, 2: 10. Atd numerous other parages might be quoted, to the same effect, concerning other bible characters of whom it is said they "slept" with their fathers. "Ho said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn." Mutt. 0 ;24. "And (he graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose." Matt. 27 :52. "These things said be ; and after that be saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth ; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep." John 11 : 11. "But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept." 1 Cor. 15:20. But why quote innumerable passages which might be quot d? K ally drnth, but that it nl liiftrly a change of Mat r condition of eiiitntr, and I hat lb tlrpaiUd till lit d afirr death in spirit world. This error has given rite to what is commonly railed 8piritunlim, and the supposed ability of our departed friend to roiumunicuto with us after lonth through so-called spirit mediums. Tho only way that I know of in which this spiritual phenomenon can bo accounted for, is ns follows: We have iilnitnlant evidence in the word of God that thero are unseen spirits or angels hovering around us : that somo of theso nro "an gels of light," or "guardian an gels," or "ministering spirits," sent by tho Father to comfort us ; that thero aro also fallen angels, those who wero cust out of heaven with Satan, when there was war in heaven, and Michael and his angels prevailed and Satan and his angels wero cast out of heaven. I will give hero only a few of the many passages of Scriptuio which might bo quoted on this point. "And of the angels ho saith, Who makcth his angels spirits, and his ministers a Hume of fire. Are they not all minis tering spirits, sent forth to min ister for them who shall he heirs of salvation?" Hob. 1:7, 14. "And there was war in hea ven fought against the dragon ; and the dragon fought and his an gels, And prevailed not ; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great drag on was cast out, that old serpent, called tho Devil, and Hatan, which deceivcth the whole world : he was cast out into tho earth, and his angels were cast out with him." Kev. 12; 7, 8, V. These latter angeli, under the leadership of Satan, are con stantly striving to lead mankind into error and to destruction, to deceive "the whole world," as the passage above puts it; and having been familiar with man's character, disposition, manners and ways of life before death, can easily portonify him after death, and they do this, in order to deceive mankind, lead him into the belief that he can com municate with the departed, and make him think that death is only a change of sphere of existence, and not really extinc tion of life, just as Satan said to Eve, "Ye shall not surely die." But instead of this, we are taught by the word of God, as in the above scripture refer ences, that death is an uncon scious state, like a sleep, and that when the time shall have come for tho resurrection, they shall awake, as from a' long sleep, as stated in Daniel 12:2, above quoted, "some to ever lasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt." What has been said above has reference to the "first death;" but 4here is a "second death," spoken of in Revelation 20 :C. "Blessed and holy is ho that hath pait in the first resurrec tion : on such the second death hath no power, but they shall bo priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years." Ilev. 20 : 0. And this leads me to my third point. THE AMGRIO III till r !)1MIf I'l 1H ! k MaUl 11 4 t It A l.Mj j in mj j otl -t IhU !. Itin. I dt not know what word i mil I rtprrM lU annihilation stronger than lb words of this pnirag. "For lb wages ofstn is death; (not eternal life in miierv) but lb gift of Go t i eternal life through Jesus Chrltt our Lord." Horn. 0:23. The doctrine of eternal suflVr ing is another phae of that lie of satau "ye shall not surely lie." Satan, in order lo bring God into it false light before men, w ould have us believe that God intends to punish sinful man with on e ternal life of suff ering: but tho Scriptures tell us that God is a God of love and mercy, as well as of justice, and in his mercy he is going to de stroy, "root and branch," tho finally unrepentant sinner, and thus savo him from tho effects of an eternal life of sin, which would bo eternal suffering, if ho gave him ctornal life in his un repentant state, as, if ho contin ued in sin, and just so long as ho continued in sin, the wages of that sin would bo death. And that is the reaon why ho drovo Adam out of the garden of Eden, "lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the trco of life, and live forever," and thus perpolu ato sin with all its direful con sequences. So God, in mercy, proposes to leave tho man who rejects his plan of Salvation in the same condition as though he had never existed. "For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and thky SHALL I)E AS TUOC(.II THKY HAD not ijkkx." Obadiah, 10. The strongest passages which I have been able to find, and which might, at first glance, up pear to support the doctrine of eternal suffering as tho doom of tho finally lost sinner, are Kovo lation 20:10 and H;9, 10, 11. "And the dovil that deceived them wus cast into tho hike of fire and brimstone, where tho beast and tho false prophet are, and shall bo tormented day and NDiHT FOR KVEH AND KVKU.' Kov.20:10. "And the third angel followed them, Maying with a loud voice, If any man worsnip tho boast and his image, and receive bis mark in his forehead, or in his liand, Tho same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his in dignation ; and he shall be tor mented with fire and brimstono in the presence of the holy an gels, and in the preionce of the Lamb : And tho smoko of their TORMKNT ASSKNDETIf UP FOH V- kk and xvkr : and they have no rest day nor nipht, who wor ship the boaht and his imago, ana whosoever receiveth the mark of his name." Kev. 14:9, 10, 11. Nevertheless, I doubt very much whether theso words 5'for ever and ever" mean "through out the ceaslcss ages of eterni ty." Young's Annylitical Con cordance gives the meaning of these words in theso passages as "to the ages of tho ages" in Kev. 20:10; and in Kev. 14 :11, as "the ages of ages." And Cru- den's Concordance, in comment ing upon theso phrases, lays, "The words eternal, everlasting, for ever, are sometimes taken f.-r a !-- t;,o.
