IU Action on tha MuioIm Mor latent Tha th Contlaaoui. Some German experiments conducted to ascertain the eltecti of alternating current! on the human body were made as follows. Two metallic conductors of opposite polarity were hld, one In each band. With the hands damp and effective electromotive force of thirty volts at fifty alternations per second the whole arm scorned paralysed; extended It could not be flexed, and flexed It fould not be strengthened. At the same time the pain was so severe It could not be borne for more than five of six seconds, and It was with difficulty that the hands could be detached from the electrodes. When the voltage was raised to fifty volts complete fixation occurred, that Is, the hands could not be withdrawn by voluntary effort, and the pain was Intense. When the vol tage was raised to eighty, even with the hands dry, all the above phenomena was accentuated. The effects of alter nating currents on the muscles and or gans of the body Is much more Intense than continuous currents of the same voltage. Experiments were also conducted to observe the effects of the current pass ing to the earth through the body from live wire. A person standing on a damp macadamized road with dry shoes and touching his hnnd to a conductor having a potential of 1,000 volts, expe rienced a burning sensation, and when the conductor was grasped by the whole hnnd a violent tremor occurred through the body, with complete fix ation, Ruch experiments are execed l.igly dnngerous and might prove fatal, and, fmsequently should not be at tempted except under special condi tions, of which an expert only should be the Judge. rrmdlral. The amount of exercee n chldbood and youth should be carefully regulat ed as In many Instances ambitious children will far exceed tbelr strength In the effort to avoid being outdone by older and more robust companions. In Infancy the almost Incessant move ments of a baby's limbs show how Im perative la the Instinct of nature tor muscular exercise. Hence it Is Im portant not to restrict too much th freedom of Infants, and care should be taken to prevent their clothing being too tight to allow ample freedom for the limbs. Even the cry of a young child Is often useful as a means of ex ercising the muscles of the chest, ind In moderation must not be discouraged. The best muscular exercise for young children, says a well known writer, is the movement to which tbey are led by their natural playfulness. They, If left to themselves, will run, tumble and wrestle with each other like sportive kittens. Each limb and every muscle of their bodies will by turns rise and fall, swell, contract and perform all the actions of which they are capable.
