Coaneat Is It. '
Toronto, Not. 17. An editorial at
UcU la tba Et enloff SUr says under
the heading 'Adieu School Question":
"For years the publio ear of Canada
baa been, awaited with the Manitoba
school qufition till everybody bas be
Com tick and tired of It The hier
archy hoped to tire out the people cf
thU country and get what they wanted,
because of their much speaking. How
ever, there were ether who were de
termined to liar wltB the publio school
question, and to them U due, at lent, a
portion of the credit of the satisfactory
ettlentnt arrived at. Tbey would
ha born helpless, however, had It
"not been for the cooperation of the
Liberal! and the patrlollo stand taken
by Liurlor and hit French Canadian
colleagues. It U useless lor the organs
of the defunct government to say It was
a conspiracy. It lost IU head in a de
lire to please the hierarchy, and lout
1U job because of guessing wrong, and
bought goods which could not be de
livered In the shape of the Catholic
votes. The organs of the late adminis
tration, of oourte, will abuse Green way
and Slfton, and everybody else, for
having yielded a solitary thing to
Laurter, yet, national schools have
been saved, and separata schools have
never been established In Manitoba.
Certainly this is muoh better than the
remedial bill, ooorolen and possible
revolution, for there was dlstlnot evi
dence that all those things would have
come about had Sir Charles and the
remetllallsts been returned to power.
Hon. Mr, Slfton will make an eiocod
lngly astute and oourtoous cabinet min
ister, and In the future, as In the past,
be may bo depended upon as a staunch
defender of popular rights."
Montreal, Not. 17. La Mlnerve says,
discussing the school settlement: "We
do not know the exact language of the
settlement, but we do know from an
undoubted source that It Is not an exe
cution of the judgment of the Imperial
privy council; we know for a certainty
that It does not render to the Cathollo
minority the justloe to whloh the con
stitution gives it a right; we know,
moreover, It gives Cathollo neither
the administration of their schools, nor
the control whloh parents ought at all
times to exercise over the Instruction
and education of their children. It is
not even a compromise. It Is a regular
capitulation made by a Cathollo min
ister, betraying Catholics, oppressed by
Protestants; betraying French-Can
adians, oppressed beoause they are In
the minority, by fanatical English.
Bow true It Is that there will always be
. found in our ranks a Canadian, and
Cathollo too, cowardly enough to be
tray hit faith and hit own blood."
A Little Tale.
. The .following little tale, tayt A. 0.
Garrison In the Boston Cltlien, is true
la every particular:
Last month the month ot Septem
berIn the year ot our Lord 1806, one
McCarty was tried in the district court
of Leavenworth county, Kas., said
court being held In the city of Leaven
worth, on the obarge of stealing a val
uable diamond. The evidence against
McCarty was so conclusive tbat be did
not make a pretenoe of denying the
theft. He had been seen to take the
jewel, was immediately caught, and
the stone was found on his person. His
attorney was Mr. Jno. T. O Kief, who,
as was also the prisoner, was a member
of the Roman Cathollo church. Five
members of the jury were also Roman
Catholics.
Mr. O'Klef saw the utter usejeseness
of trying to prove his client innocent,
and made substantially the following
remarkable defence:
"Gentlemen of the jury, we de not
deny that the prisoner, McCarty, stole
the dlatcond. He confesses that he
was tempted, being a poor man, and
took the stone. Rut. contlmpn. ha haa

The trouble started at high mass,
when Father Dogackl announced that
the antl-Matkowskl faction could not
examine the church accounts. Eighty
men left the church. When mass was
over a great mob had gathered about
the vostry door and refused to permit
the pastor to return to his residence.
Father Roe ackl's-adherents came. to
his rescue and there was a fight. The
forces of the pastor were repulsed, ow
ing to the lack of organisation and
clubs. When the police came tbey
clubbed a way for Father Dogackl and
had landed him upon the rectory steps
rfhen the antl-Matkowskl taction made

Priest and offloers were driven back
to the vestry. Here Father Ii-tgackl
remained a prisoner, without food or
drink, until about 7 o'clock this even
lng, when Frank MoPhllllps, editor of
the Tribune, learning that threats of
dynamiting the church had been made,
drove to the scene and persuaded
Father Dogackl to quietly leave the
building with him. After the prtest
departed the mob dispersed. The
church was locked by the police and a
strong guard placed In the pastoral
residence. Tomorrow the church will
be opened. Trouble Is expected, as
both factions will be put in force.

Overruling of Divine Providence.
Now that the presidential election of
1804 has passed Into history it may be
proper to note the overruling of Divine
Providence whloh has attended the
American Protective Association
from its feeble beginning until now.
It It evident that Mr. H. F. Bowers
and hit associates were planning better
than they knew when In March, 1887,
In Clinton, Iowa, they organized the
American Protective Association,
whloh was destined to act tuch a con
spicuous part against political Roman
ism In thlt country, and In a sense
against the papal power of the world.
For several yean after the organiza
tion of the A. P. A. the Roman hier
archy laughed, sneered and rldiouled
the order at a poor feeble thing of no
account and which would toon fall to
pieces and vanish out et tight without
accomplishing anything In politics.
But in a tew yean the papist found
that the organization had a wonderful
power ot enduranoe and growth, which
made Rome fear and tremble at Its in
creasing influence and power in poli
tics; and to-day the papal hierarchy 1
fairly (hocked and terrified at the
alarming diffusion of light and know
ledge whloh forces It to realize that
its own political doom Is foreshadowed
in the near future unless that trouble
some order can be wiped out from poli
tics, but It trlet to suppress its fears at
much at possible from publio view.
The American Protective Associa
tion would not have chosen the terrible
ordeal through which It passed last
spring when It It said that through Ro
man Cathollo Influence 1150,000 were
provided as a bribe to inveigh against
Major McKlnley'i Americanism and to
disrupt the noble A. P. A. organiza
tion. The order would not have chosen
to receive tuch political rebuffs as it
did receive at the late national conven
tions, especially from the Republicans
and Populists. And the order would
not have chosen the recent develop
ments of disloyalty to principle; but in
the midst of all these unexpected trials
and apparent remorses we clearly see
the overruling hand of Divine Provi
dence guiding the political affairs of
the American Protective Association
and placing it to-day under circum
stances so favorable to its success and
the ultimate triumph of its principles.
It Is believed that the president-elect
will prove true to his Americanism. If
so, it will give the A. P. A. a good op
portunity to put in better work on its
legitimate lines than ever before. And
tt now looks as though the Republican
party may be the proper channel
through which the American platform
principles will triumph in

honest mosey, repudiation and an

powerful and rich. It was most refresh
ing to many of ua to witness the dig'
nlfled course followed by, the Catholic
priesthood. Their wise course cannot
fall to draw the attention and gala the
sympathy of the common people of this
country whose cause has been largely
abandoned by the other churches. The
laboring men and the producers of
America will not be saved by the ef
fort of the priesthood of the golden
calf the I preachers. , They must look
to some other quarter, and tbey are
likely to do so. Beatrice Tribune.
