Her is an Incident hit h. to be ap preciated, needs a glance at the tweet womanly face of the young Mrs. Stan ton: Mrs. Stanton was summering at Saratoga, eagerly enjoying tbe delight of that fascinating young watering place half a century ago a merry young mother, in great demand for tur agreeable manners and sparkling con versauon, as well as for her talented performances upon the guitar. Chatting with a friend one day, the woman ques tion that bugbear of the moment wa brought up. "Isn't it dreadful," he re marked, "to think of a woman bo un exing herself as actually to appear oerare the legislature at Albany?" Nat uraily enough, the heroine of this very shocking procedure protested against this interpretation of woman" sphere; yet, amused by her friend's faux pas. mischievously she led him on. "What kind of a woman is this Mrs. Stanton?" she inquired. "Oh, a dreadful kind of a woman was the reply. "Just the kind of wo man one would expect would do such a thing." Do describe her," pleaded his tor mentor. "Tell me more about her." And he, nothing loath, went on: "Well, she's a large, masculine-looking woman, with high cheek-bones and a loud, harsh voice don't you know Just one of those regular woman's rights women." "Have you really seen her, or is this taken from the papers?" she asked. Quietly. "Of course I have seen her; did I not tell you that I heard her before the legislature?" "How did she speak?" "Frightfully; it was simply awful. Her strident voice and her masculine appearance 6hould have been the death knell to her cause." "What is her name, did you say?" "Mrs. Stanton Mrs. Henry Stanton, In fact." "Why, that's my name!" she said. "Of course she's your namesake, so I thouht you would be interested. Hut I knew it could be no relation of yours. Ha, ha, ha!" Mrs. Stanton rose. "I am afraid I am she," she said. Of course there was nothing for him to do but to confess and grovel. IkiU oa Ufa atutat Ion. One of the large drawing rooms of the New York residence of Mra. Alva Vanderbilt at Madison avenue and Sev enty-second street is forty feet deep. and Its chief feature is the magnificent fresco work on tbe walla and ceiling. Mrs. anderbtlt has always been fond of a great deal of color in the ornamen Ution of her numerous homes, and the mass of richness to be found in these apartment is almost oppressive. But the fact that the ceilings are very high tones down the wealth of color, and the dainty furnishings give a bright ana cheery effect to the whole. Many of the art treasures of Marble house at Newport have been moved to this house, for it was the intention of the mistress to make the bravest possible snowing when all the fashionable world came to see her daughter made a duch ess. One of her treasures is a screen in mree sections, representing "Wine, w omen and Song." It was painted by a notable German artist, and, although dui about four feet high and about the same in breadth, cost the neat sum of ,(W0. The first section shows a Dac- chanallan cupid holding a wine cup; the second, two cupids dancing at tendance upon a beautiful woman, and the third a singing cupid. The frames are covered with velvet and the orna mentations at the top of the standards are of gilt. This Is said to be the finest screen in the countrv. The walls of the drawing room are nearly covered with Gobelin tapestries, the intervening space being devoted to magnificent panels and medallions of a beautiful decorative character. It la not proba ble that elaborate floral decorations will be used to ornament the house, as It has always been Mrs. Vanderbilt's policy to rely upon the permanent splendor of her home. This was the case when she gave her famous ball at Marble house last August in honor of her daughter. All the art treasures which she had collected during the last twenty years were exhibited, giving guests at the dance more pleasure than the customary profusion of flowers. A PennijlvMa Snake Story. Our zoological ft end, Thomas Kuhn, while out In the woods was charmed by a display of animal instinctum mag num that ordinary mortals seldom see. In a cool, grassy part of the deep forest near Marshall's mills he discovered a mother blackanake playing with her family of six litt't ones. The old one was suspended between two saplings eight feet apart, her head was wrapped around one tree and her tail around an other. She was swinging back and forth like a jumping-rope and the little snakes were Jumping the rope. They played for soms time, when the old snana ana a couple or young ones crawled upon a large rock. In a short time a young cnake appeared with irog. The old snake divided it up among the baby snakes, who rewarded her by going a way and catching a frog for her. The oid snake was twelve feet four Inches in length. Latrobe (Pa.) Clipper. Cana Urdu of the Border. Eastpdrt, Ke.. with its 6.000 inhabi tants, is the New York, the London, the Paris of Campcbello and the adjacent Canadian coast. They must buy and sell at Eastport and they depend upon it for everything. Yet there Is a gulf deeper and wider than Paesamaquoddy bay between the two peoples. The Cana dians of the borders are always more Canadian than those living in Montreal or Quebec. All Canadians would shriek their denial of any jealousy of the United States but until they are all made over and made different, ,as Mrs. Pozen says, they cannot help being Jealous of It. A small country for Can ada is email in wealth and population, though vast in extent cannot regard with Indifference a great, rich coun try which borders it and jealousy springs up as naturally as the sparks fly upward. Lewlston Journal. "Pipe Stories." "There is one favorite Chicago ex pression that I don't hear in Washing ton so often," said a correspondent from the Windy City to a Post man. "It is 'pipe' stories as synonym for fake or canard or ghost stories. "Where does It come from? Oh, it came from the West, along with the Chinese, and I suppose you will get here when Chinamen and opium Joints become more numerous. There are lots of white hop fiends in Chicago. It they get hold of a green reporter or green policeman they are liable to have them stiitsing all over the universe at dead houis of the night looking for suppositional events and their menda cinat!on3 are known to the police as 'pipe Etoriefl or talking pipe.' That is the symbol in Chicagoese for anything that is without foundation in fact. Washington Post. A Remarkable Tree. There is a wayward white oak tree near Laporte, Ind., that may puzzle na turalists with the vagaries of its growth. The tree is nine feet In clrcum ference at the base, and there are no branches of any size below fifteen feet from the ground. There the great bole divides into a number of limbs. Two, leaving the trunk about twenty inches apart, grow west, their lfnes diverging for some six feet, and then each rend ing toward the other. Twelve feet from the body of the tree they unite again, making a perfect oval, and out of this grows two smaller branches. As if not satisfied with that expressed disregard for the laws of nature, this old tree has performed another feat. Six feet from its base grows another white oak, less than half its size, and no sooner does the smaller tree arrive at the charmed circles of those branching limbs than one of them grows right into it, and is absorbed. The second tree is very much larger twenty feet from the ground than at its base. She is gradually getting her rights here in France, anyhow." "Think bo?" laughed Mr. Strongmind. "I don't. That woman is playing second fiddle." Expenatva Smoking.
