"The biggest game of poker I have
heard of in the past few years," said
a Callfornlan, "was played In San
Francisco about two years ago between
'Lucky' Baldwin and a California cat
tleman. The game waa limited, but one
by one the players dropped out, until
nobody was left In but Baldwin and
the cattleman. They agreed to waive
the limit, and the cattleman set the
pace. He wanted to bet 10,000. Bald

head, and said he didn't have that
much to lose, but he would like to put

was agreeable, and the cattle were as
sessed at $10 a head. Then the cattle
man raised Baldwin $10,000. That

Sir Robert Ball has answered the
Question as to how long it would take
to send a telegram to the sun. Meas
uring space by time, he takes as his
unit a circuit surrounding the equator
of the earth seven times, along which
a telegraphic message can be sent the
whole distance in 1 second. It would
take Jut 8 min. for a similar message
to reach the sun, but to reach the stars
is not a matter of minutes. Even the
nearest of them, the Alpha of the
Centaurl, could not be reached In less
than four years,, while it would take
centuries to most of them. An express
train would have to travel at a pace of
forty miles an hour, not alone for days
and for weeks and for years, but even
for centuries. Indeed, not until 265
years had elapsed would Its Journey to
the sun be ended.

The suit of Marquis dl Marescottl of
Bologna, Italy, against the Princess
Anna Maria Torlonla of Rome, which
has Just come to an end in the former
city, has excited widespread Interest.
It had a curious origin. In 1821 a
Torlonla was married to a Marescottl
and brought him a marriage gift con
slderably less than had been promised.
The marquis of that time sued for the
difference and the present marquis re
ceived a verdict of 267,000 francs
