The city council took some preliml nary steps in the interests of the Trans-Mississippi Exposition Tuesday evening. The recent large real estate trans' fers in this city show that confidence in the future of Omaha investments is returning. The Union Pacific tent out one of the heaviest passenger trains Thursday afternoon that has left this city in many weeks. , . Charles J. Johnson, of the Ninth ward, has been appointed a sanitary inspector by the board of health, to sake effect April 1st, The Central Republican Club is one of the recent organizations for the na tional campaign. It starts out with about forty memoers. Heavy snows are reported from various parts of Nebraska during the past week, which is regarded as indica tive of good crop prospects. nnn HUTU5 Theatre Co. 5unday Matinee John O. Yeiser addressed the farmers' meetiag of Union and Jeffer son precincts at Irvlngton, Thursday evening, on the silver issues. Policeman Hoff, owing to a difficulty in arresting J. O. Pearsall Tuesday night, was suspended for thirty days by the fire and police board. The supreme court of Nebraskaohss doolared the Platte ditch-canal act un constitutional, thus affirming the judg ment of the district court of Douglas county. The Omaha retailers have organised themselves into an association which is destined to be ot some benefit to Omaha if their present line of action Is continued. Mr. A. Hospe, Jr., Is presi dent. The recent action of the railway companies in takiagoff the terminal charges on shipments of stock to the South Omaha market will save many hundreds of dollars to the shippers of the state. , The farmers of Dodge county, Ne braska, at a recent convention in Fre mont, decided to plant a large acreage in hemp this year, with a view to es tablishing a factory for its consumption in Fremont. The supreme court of Nebraska has refused to grant a new trial in the case of the State against ex-Treasurer J. E. Hill and hia bondsmen, growing out of the failure of the Capital National Bank ot Lincoln. Toe Wanderers' Club gave a very enjoyable "Smoker" at Myrtle Hall, Continental Block, Thursday evening, which was addressed by General John C. Cow In and other speakers. An ex cellent musical program was also ren dered. Hon. John L. Webster is In Wash- ton looking after the interests of the state in the maximum rate suits in the supreme court of the United States. The strong argument made by him Thursday in the interest of Nebraska shippers cannot fail to be commended by everyone interested. As a result of a conference between Mayor Broatch, the council judiciary ooommittee, Judge Gordon and City Prosecutor Ten Eyck, the matter of re mitting fines will in the future be left entirely with the mayor, and there will be more "bread-and-water" sentences as punishment for "vags" who make the city support them during the greater part of the winter. The Bimetallio League of this city held an interesting public debate at Patterson Hall on tha money question Thursday evening. The club now has 190 members and is still growing. The club passed resolutions instructing its secretary to communicate with Major McKlnley and other presidential can dates in order to obtain their views on bimetallism. For Sale.
