OMAHA, NEBRASKA, FRIDAY. MARCH C, 189C. Nombeb 10 PLOTTINGS OF ROME Pope at the Head of an Abso lute Despotism He Is a Political Prince. free Citizenship Incompatible with Allegiance to the Throne or the Sovereign Pontiff. (Copyrlghtl REV. J. Q. A. BKNBY, D. D. Romanism is an absolute despotism, the most unlimited of monarchies. Th pope is supreme in the manipulation of the papal hierarchy. He is a political prince forever unreoonciled to the loss of temporal power. Brovlus affirms that the pope has the supreme power over kUigs and Christian princes, Merclnees asserted: "The pope is the lord of the whole world." That these political pretensions have been a fruit ful source of the seditions and wars which, like successive tornadoes, have swept in fearful rapidity over Christen dom, the records of history furnish the most incontrovertible proof. These papal machinations have interfered with the peace of France, Germany Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Russia, Poland, China, Japan, Egypt, Abyssinia, and many other govern menu, inciting to anarchy, war and revolutions. In addition to this politi cal intrigue, the Romish church has assailed all Protestants and noo-Cath olics with the most execrable persecu tion. In her fiendish malice she ooun' sels the violation pi every principle of justice, of every obligation to human' ity, of all contracts and oaths, and urges as a duty the persecution and extermination of all unbelievers, by means of corporal punishment, im prisonment, banishment, murder, fire sword and scaffold. In our republic the pope has established his political plant, built up his papal prisons, se lected strategic centers, and collected his most un-American and reliable sub jects, in order that he may engulf our cherished institutions and disrupt our civilization. Bishop Hughes said Ro manism was friendly to republics, for they allowed its free development. But our people should know that the tri umph of Romanism means the subver sion of republics and the establishment of political and religious despotism. When they say that Romanism will one day rule America, and then relig' ious liberty will be at an end, they ap peal to the instincts of self-preserva tion, and justify a free and Independent people in the adoption of any and every unreasonable measure that may be necessary to thwart their treason and destroy their diabolical design. Con cernlng the political treachery of the Roman Cathollo hierarchy, there can be no reasonable doubt. By what means do they hope to execute their treasonable purpose? Enough ha been reached within the past fifty years to show that they are working according to a carefully considered plot. They seek to ruin the republic by subversion rather than conquest. Their plot in volves the influx of the low and dissat isfied I populations of Europe, until a surplus majority of this inflammable and un-American population can be mobilized in the strategic centers of our civilization, make these men citi zens and (invest them with suffrage, andjthey in turn will create dissension, strife and 'anarchy among respectable citizens and parties, while they will standiand vote together till they come into possession of the cities, the army and the navy, control the press, destroy the schools, annul all the laws guaran teeing liberty J of thought, speech, conscience and worship, and build upon the graves of Protestantism and Amer ican freedom o the -most damnable des potism that Jever cursed the world. Romanism refuses to become Ameri canized, becausej ber hope of success depends upon her control of these im migrantsjthus retaining their ancient principles, (customs and religion. All know tbe radical change that has oc curred within the past forty years as to the nationalities and character of the Immigrants who have come to our shores less and less of (the desirable class and more and more 'from Romish countries. They come at papal dicta tion and remain subject to priestly con trol. They are not content with peace ful measures, i but are arming by the hundred thousandjready for the fatal hour when, in'view of the apathy, dls senslonjand weakness of non-Catholic forces,1 these scullions of the pope will take the reins of government and apply the principle -of papal ..authority to the utter destruction of American liberties. Then ProteetantsJ and Americans will be at the mercyJoCthose whom we have harbored, and-who'declare we have no rights whlchthej,'papacy is bound to respect. Then.Jby the secret machin-, Uncle Sam "There must be ecclesiastical despot! The Jesuits are at work; I must watch closely those I have on guard in the various offices. If they countenance such work as this, I shall call new men to my service." ery of Rome, one faction will be in flamed against another, and one section of the land will be put at variance with another. Then rapine, violence, as sassination, sedition, massacre every' thing that can render life and property Insecure will distract every village, city and state in the Union. Then, according to Bronsoa, heresy and Infl denty will be declared to have no rights. Then, according to Archbishop Kenrick, Protestantism will be de clared to be a crime and punished as such. Then, according to Archbishop St. Louis, religious liberty will no longer be endured. Then, according to Hecker, the Catholic church will be compelled to take the country and keep it. Then the inquisition will be introduced and the darkness of the middle ages will settle over the land. School-houses, colleges and churches will be converted to papal purposes, fortunes will be confiscated, and the total resources of the government used to subdue the world to the Antichrist. Liberty of speech and liberty of the press will be no more. Papal dungeons be the homes and the graves of Ameri can freemen. Then will the inhuman monster, the monarchical demon, the god of slaves and aristocrats, quaff blood like water, and view with scorn ful indifference the squalid millions whom he has impoverished and robbed of life, liberty and the pursuit of hap piness. This is an awful picture for a free people to contemplate; but evi dences multiply with every passing year that a plot no less damnable than this is being unfolded in the history of our rapidly Romanized civilization. Is the last star of human freedom to be extinguished? and is our republic Itself to set In a night of despotism without the hope of a coming moon? The an swer to this question will be given by tbe attitude and action of the Ameri can people within the next decade. If men and ministers continue to cry Peace peace, when there is no peace; if Christians continue to treat this mother of harlots" as the pride of Christ; if an apathetic citizenship re fuses to break the power of political Romanism by the peaceful measures of the ballot, then a fatality no less dark and damning certainly overhangs our cherished republic. Thank God, the spirit of freedom is immortal. Indica tions are not wanting in the present patriotic revival that the spirit of '76 and '61 still lives, and that the same heroic devotion which secured our na tional independence and maintained our national integrity, will once more come to the front and preserve Ameri can institutions by forever breaking the political power of Romanism, hich has been the assassin of human liberty in every land and age. This is an hour of crisis and this a day of des some mistake here; this hall was tiny. Union or separation, freedom or slavery, fortune or confiscation, co operation or the inquisition one or the other is inevitable. A few years more and the die will be cast, the de cision irreversible. In this critical year every citizen should certainly vote to put none but Americans on guard. Chicago, III. m Misfits. Because there were men like Linton and Hainer, who opposed the confirma tion of Coppinger, the (Roman) Catholic Leader calls them "Misfits." There is not a word that applies better to their idol, Coppinger. If any one will look up the record of Coppinger and not call him a "Misfit," rather than these two men who are standing by our coun try, l am mistaken. And you can mark my words, "Time will show that he is a misfit." And when I see such men forced Into high positions by the Roman Cathollo church (?) I say let the people of the United States make that church know where her place is, and make her stay where she belongs, and punish her according to her per sistency to do otherwise. This "bringing of the,'(Roman) Catho lic Leader to time" will undoubtedly make it froth at the mouth, and because of this it will yelp and howl and snap. It is the nature of the .beast, and can not do otherwise. Orleans. Power of tbe A. P. A. Evidences in all directions tend to show that for the last two years a power has been in American politics beneath the surface, operating in un seen ways and accomplishing the most Important results, byj organized meth od!). Undoubtedly the organization known as the "A. P. A.," whateverlname the initials may represent, is a more solid organization, with greater secrecy and craft in its operations than the old Know-nothing order, or any previous order with similar objects. The vot ing force of this organization Is Im mense. Its main power, however, is in its thorough discipline. Its mem bers vote whether other citizens do or not. They have no off year. Their motto is eternalvigilance. Chi cago Chronicle. Bishop Vincent. The (Roman) CatMic Leader says Bishop Vincent said: "I never mean to forget that I belong to the holy Catholic church." And the paper adds: "The name Is no longer a reproach." The name "Holy Catholic Church" never wasa reproach, but this mean, contemptable, underhanded, Jesuitical, semi-pagan, anti-Christian, blood stained, Roman Catholic church is another name altogether, and Bishop Vincent will tell you so if you will take the trouble to ask him. Orleans. for our country's great men, not HOW ROME WORKS. Government Positions Largely In the ' Bands or Her Loyal (tons. The venerable Rev. Alexander M. Marvin, of Pasadlna, Cal., April 20, 1895, says in a letter originally pub lished In the San Francisco Occident (Presbyterian): "The United States Senator from this district, Hon. Stephen White, is well known as an able man, an eloquent orator, and faithful advocate of the in terests of Southern California. In com mon with others in his position he has the power of filling a number of lucra tive offices. The sixteen appointments already made bear, without exception, we are told, the names of Roman Cath olics. Mr. White appears to be loyal to the church of which he Is a member, and no one can question his right to bestow favors on his co-rellglonlsts. But this little incident seems to show that If you want to augment tbe politi cal power of Romanism the best way is to elect to a high position one of its adherents; then you have one multi plied by sixteen, and sixteen multiplied by twice that number of subordinates, and so on. It's no wonder that some sensible voters sympathize with the alms of the A. P. A. A purely relig ious boycott is a hateful thing, but the boycotting of a politico-religious ma chine that has brought shame and disaster on thousands is quite another matter, and may be along the line of true patriotism and righteousness." A boycott is a hateful thing. The aggressions of Romanism in America have been stupidly, patiently and peacefully borne by the American peo ple. Now the pope's followers are so strong in our midst there will hence forth be no such peace, unless their schemes of clannish industrial substitu tion and boycotting actions cease. Will It cease? If It does not. what will Americans do about It? Also, here Is another Instance of how this scheme works: Attention lscalled to a cample page of the last issue of the United States Official Register of all government employes, page 340. Upon this page are named 00 employes, only seven of them were born In this coun try; 66 were born in Ireland, and the remainder from an equally Roman Catholic country, Austria. Only with political influence, under present con ditions, can such things come to pass, and a civil service law will not change this condition of its execution is left to such schemers. At Washington, numerous are the instances where Roman Catholic ad herents are specially favored, and we could double tbe length of this lengthy paper narrating interesting facts, not withstanding a strong civil service system is in force. for the subjects of some foreign These Influences at work are merci less, grasping, selfish. Political power Is an aim of Romanism, not respecting our industries or our institutions, if profit will be a reward to them. No knowledge is ascertainable from this stealthy power as to what extent they have influenced our currency; but, sines the close of the year 189, Eng lish banks squeezed from "Uncle Sam" a profit of about $11,000,000 In one deal, the government askln; the unusual, humiliating and conditional favor that they should use their Influence to assist our treasury to maintain its gold re serve. The principal English banking house, operating in this profitable en' terprlse, is the same as the one where the gold of the pope's millions is banked. About 150 years ago the Catholic church attempted to control the commerce of a good portion of the world; Is it now attempting to manlpu late the currency of the world, and bring distress upon mankind for its own gain? View the situation from almost any standpoint, it is painfully apparent the hand of some unbrotherly Romanist is near, touching the sources of Influence, and affecting the peace of the nations. Now, the people of the United States should be determined that when this class of foreigners land upon our shores they become Americans, in accepting sincerely the principles of the Consti tution; or else, if they are determined remain in political allegiance, repre sentatives of a foreigner claiming civil power, and seek constantly the advancement of such a foreign des potism, Americans should preslst in tbe determination that such people peep their hands off our institutions; and, should these loyal political pa pists so continue to act, they must ex pect to be legislated against as for eigners, or as alien voters. In a word, insist upon efficient com mon schools for young America. In sist that the teachers possess the char acter you wish yourchlldren to possess. The voters are to blame for the con ditions stated in this paper. They should, therefore, always attend the primaries of their respective parties, and every other meeting of political importance. They should iosist that their principles be recognized In every person soliciting party support. The voters should try to keep out of con trol, in every party, all selfish combi nations of men, and combine to do it, if necessary. The ascendency of men who labor for their personal interests, rather than the common good, should be kept under, especially those seeking some personal legislative advantage. The national campaigns are almost supported by selfish combinations. The Louisiana Lottery would have been legislated out of existence years before It wan, If leaders of one of the national parties had not pledged "no portal legislation" detrimental to them. Tbe "trusts" and "combine' now appear to have tbelr selfish later eU fotttc red 4 Romanism Is like wine a combine against American Institutions and should be clonely observed by the people. Tbe alcoholic liquor system Is another great combine, debauching our youth and keeping men In poverty, and It is well known popery gets con slderable gain out of It, probably more net gain than the government. Men should lay asido partisanship, If neces sary, to maintain good popular govern ment, and voters must not permit bad men to be nominated for office; but If they are, act with Independence and earnestness, supporting only good men, securing at the same time a pledge of the aspirants for office to advocate the living Issues of the times. By so doing, in due time the evils will be corrected. Without constant watch fulness popular government falls. Reader, do your part, and earnestly persuade your neighbor to unite with you. ' Vangrroas Fewer of Catholics. Under this head the Vrtrtryterian Met enyer gives the following, which speaks for It e If, and requires no comments: "One of the papers says: 'The Catho lics are only about one-sixth of the pop ulation of the United States, yet they bold more than one-half of thepubllo offices. Why is this? First, it is be cause they are instructed by the priests to get into office, and there to get ap propriations from the publlo funds for the Cathollo church. Then all Catho lics are instructed to vote for the nomi nee, and they do It, for the priests see to it that their people go to the polls and cast their votes for their own men.'" Mr. Stead, In his book, "If Christ Came to Chicago," says: "The Catho lics of Chicago have the mayor, the chief of police, the chief of tbe fire de partment, tbe postmaster, the city at torney, the clerk of the circuit court, the clerk of the probate court, the clerk of the supreme court, a number of the judges and forty-five of the sixty- eight aldermen. Ninety per cent, of the police force, 80 per cent, of the fire department nod 60 per cot . of th school teachers are Catholics, while 80 per cent, of the pupils are Protestants as half the Cathollo children go to the priests' schools." . " ' Dr. Scott P. Hersby, In a recent let ter to the writer, says: ."In some rooms and divisions In Washington city 60 to 70 per cent, of the clerks and employes are Catholics. The question may well bo asked by all good citizens: What does all this mean? m Cromwell's Warning. A Boston Standard correspondent contributes the following Interesting letter to that journal: "A little less than two and a half centuries ago Oliver Cromwell uttered the following remarkable text for the A. P. A. of to-day: 'Because It Is true and certain that the papists, the priests and Jesuits have a great Influence, they prevail ujwn the discontented spirits of the nation, who are not all so apt to see where the dangers lie, nor to what the management of affairs tends. Those do foment all things that tend to dis service; to propagate discontent upon the minds of men. This pope is a per son all the world knows to be a person of zeal for his religion, and a man of contrivance and wisdom and policy, and his designs are known to be all over. Nothing but an endeavor to unite all the popish interests in all the Chris tian world agalDst all tbe Protestant Interests In tbe world.' " History does not repeat itself In the above; it is and has been a continuing history, with the came danger and menace in ambush; and not even con gressmen can afford to forget or excuse it. Hit Portlands. Trying to Deliver the Coods. This Father Lacombe, who sfeks to put the hierarchical screws on Mr. Laurier and other members of the Lib eral party, is the clerical promoter to whom the Dominion government has recently granted a large slice of the Northwest territories to found a colony of half-breeds. The colony, it Is to be presumed, will develop Into a solid Ro man Catholic constituency, and will be of material value to the hierarchy. This gift of the people's property doubt less helped to make the Dominion gov ernment solid with the clerics; ana now the hierarchy is expressing its appreciation of the favor by a good turn for the embarrassed aggregation of bosses and tools who are seeking to convey another large donation to the grasping bishops. It's a disgraceful deal altogether; and neither the hier archy nor the government cuts a dlgni-. fiei figure. Toronto Star.
