THEY U0T THERE
The A. I. A.N Arrived From XaMiville
on Time Election Day.
"Don't it beat the devil," fatd Col.
Ben Crutehfield, the day after the elec
tion. "What?" he was a-?ked.
"Why, the manner in which those
d d A. '. A. 's travel over the country.
Here a couple of weeks ago they sailed
into Nashville and swept the town as
clean as a new pin. It was tipped off to
tne that they were on their way to
Louisville, and sure enough they got
there according to the program yester
day. They must be a peculiar set, sure,
to travel around so promiscuously and
turn things upside down as they do."
"Didn't I tell you what they would
do when they got there?" put in John
Brown, the ex threa card monte man.
"Yes, you did, but I was afraid to
play them,'' replied old Ben.
'I wasn't," said Brown. "I went
right down the l'ne with $.",0(i0, played
the A. 1. A. '8 straight at even money,
and I have just added five thou-and to
my bank roll."
"Lucky dog, lucky dog," mattered
old Ben, as he strolled over to the
court-house yard, dug up a geranium
root and chewed It as an antldotj for
corn whisky. Juntm-

the best makes, and will give good service:
will in other states. In Democratic
states the Democratic party will natu
rally be the sufferer, while Republicans
will probably feel it most in Republican
states. It is one of llioso ephemeral
organisations that sometimes springs
up in politics and play the mischief
with men and parties while they last.
It will burn itself out in a year or two.
There are a few reforms suggested by
the organization worthy of considera
tion on their merits and which have
been thought of long ago. before the
society was organized. But A. I. A.
people have handicapped their few
reasonable and meritorious propor
tions with others so wildly fanatical
end ridiculous that they can accom
plish nothing. There is so much might
be said, for Instance, and much that
has been said by men ef sounder judg
ment than the A. P. A. leaders, in fa
vor of placing more rigid restrictions
upon foreign immigration so as to pre
vent the offscourings of Kurope from
being dumped upon our Bhores. So,
too, there is something preposterous in
the idea of extending the right of suf
f age to men who have no knowledge of
our institutions, who are not imbued
with American ideas and who have not
even learned to speak the language of
the country. But the central idea of
the A. P. A is simply ludicrous. The
white-faced terror of papal plots and
conspiracies is laughable to any man
who knows the spirit of this enlightened
age. Whether the pope dreams of tem
poral power and dominion is something
of which we have no knowledge. We
are not of his faith or his church, and
do not presume to know his thoughts
or his purposes. But if he has any
such dream he is not the great intellect
he is thought to be, but a very simple
and foolish old man. We know that no
such dream can be realized, and we
think the pope knows it, and that every
Catholic feels and understands it; The
truth is, that even in med'a'val times
the pope was never as omnipotent as
he is generally supposed to have been.
We know that he thundered his an
athema at Magna Charta and sup
ported King John with all the terrors
of Rome, but we know, also, that Cath
olic bishops defied the papal curse and
supported the barons in their contest
with the kiDg. It is nonsense to sup
pose that in this enlightened day there
is any possibility of a papal despotism
being established in any enlightened
country. It is "bogie man," a "gob
blin" to frigh en children. Because
it ia so, it will disappear like all the
other air-drawn ghofcts and monsters
that occasionally rise up to stir the

We are glud that the mi rninir paper
(if this city reull.es at lust the fict that
the A. P. A., as in Kentucky so in
other dates, will "cut a very consider
able figure" in the elections. It is al
ways well, when the condition i-tares
you in the face, toadmit it. 'in Demo
cratic states the Democratic party will
naturally be the sufferer, while Repub
licans will probably feel it most in Re
publican states." Do you know the
reason? Because the A. P. A. is neither
Democratic nor Republican, but pro
poses to cast its ballot fur true Ameri
cans, whether in the one or the other
or neither. See? "It is one of those
ephemeral organizations that some
times spring up in politics and play
the mischief with men Hnd parties
while they last." We can say right
here, of a truth, that the American
Protective Association will play the
mischief with both the old parties as
long as they refuse to give us a good,
clean, patriotic administration. Just
as long as tho.-e parties countenanre
fraud, corruption and bribery, just so
long will the "mischief" bo played.
"It will burn itself out in a year or
two.'' We 1, if it does, we propose to
have some fun while it lasts. We will
uelp to put a few good Americans in
office before the cremation taWs place.
But time will tell who is the prophet.
"There are a fe reforms suggested by
the organization worthy of considera
tion on their merits.'' Thank you,
brother. You have won the everlast
ing gratitude of many thousand Ameri
can citizens of Memphis for this gra
cious acknowledgment. As Brother
Long said last Sunday, "If it were not
that we had just dined and are too full
for utterance." we would show our ap
preciation in fit and appropriate Ian
gunge. As it is, we are your debt r.
"But the A. P. A. people have handi
capped their few reasonable and meri
torious propositions with others so
wildly fanatical and ridiculous that
they can accomplish nothing." There,
now, what do you think of that? The
A. P. A.'s, according to the writer
above, bas already "cut a very con
siderable figure in the Kentucky elec
tions, as it will in other states." They
play "the mischief with men and
parties while they last," and yet they
can do nothing. That sounds like
"You can and you can't,
V'ou will and you won't.
You shall and you shan't.

But, like all others, theobjictor fails
to point out his obj"ction. lie says
there is something about the American
Protcctl ve Association that Is "so wildly
fanatical and ridiculous." What is it?
Why, ho says "the central Idea of the
A. P. A. is simply ludicrous." Well,
what is the "central idea" of the A. P.
A ? Modesty would suggest that be
fore you pronounce a thing simply ri
diculous you first ascertain what that
thing iB. You have not even hinted at
it In the above. And, let us say right
here that the one who does not know
whether "the pope dreams of temporal
power and dominion" is, without much
further instruction and knowledge, ut
terly unable to represent fairly and
truthfully the "central idea of the A.
P. A." The principles of the A. P. A.
are vwblishcd weekly in hundreds of
papers, and we challenge any one who
is true to the principles of the Govern
ment of the United States to pronounce
the grand "central idea of the A. P.
A.," which is to keep the church sepa
rate and distinct from the state,
"simply ridiculous." 'it the A. P.
A.) is one of the movements that can't
be reasoned with, for it is not based on
reason. When it gets tired it will
quit." Allow us to correct the above.
The A. P. A. "is one of those move
ments" that must be reasoned with,
for it is based on reason, truth and
principle, and when its principles are
established it will quit and not before.

For Ilihle Reading in Schools.
A petition bearing f0,000 signatures
and asking that the reading of the
Bible be restored to the public schools
will be presented soon to the board of
education. The petition has been pre
pared and circulated by the Woman's
Educational Union of Chicago.
The Union held a meeting yeeterday
afternoon at the reside! ee of Mrs. Case,
the president, 201 Ashland boulevard,
to consider the outlook for the move
ment. Reports from the committee
having charge of the petition were en
couraging and it was decided that mat
ters were in such shape the document
could be presented to the board of edu

Kimball read a paper on the subject of
reading the Bible in the public schools,

Bancjok, Me., Nov. It Both Cath
olics and Protestants are highly ex
cited over the recent renting oH the city
hall to Kvangelist Leyden, and the sub
sequent announcement by Mayor Snow
of his determination not to allow Ley
den to appear.
Mr. Leyden advertiMid extensively
in the city and vicinity, and proposes to
deliver an attack on the Roman
church and rites Scnday and Monday
nights.
Yesterday morning Vicar General
O'Brien called on the mayor and is un
derstood to hae said: "You know I
have only to call upon my people to
stop this thing."
The mayor theretijmn ordered the
custodian of the hall to close the same
Sunday. The fact that Leyden pos
sesses the city's contract allowing him
to occupy the hall, and has paid rent
in advance, doubles tho difficulty.
The. Roman Catholics are much
stirred, and make earnest threats of
riot. Protestants of all parties are an
gry with the mayor for his easy ae
quiesence to the demands.
Father O Brien stated to the mayor
that Lyden couldn't appear in any
city in New England, except Portland,
and not there but for Mayor Baxter.

Peoria, 111., Nov. 1. The farmers
surrounding Lawn Ridge, a small ham
let in the extreme northern part ef the
county, are up in arms against an out
rage perpetrated there Friday night
last, word of which has just reached
this city. The school-directors of the
district, in compliance with the state
law, recently suspended a largo Amer

Everything worked all right until Fri
day night, when somebdy fired a load
of buckshot through it. There are
guards now on duty day and night, and
the discovery of the guilty party may
be followed by lynching.
