They are given out t.y the roglatcr of the land oftlce. Well, they changed registers on iiik t"n thing rfolng along smoothly, and a Ut tla, aarrow-cheted down-Kasierner got ttl Job. One of the first thing h J"l A to twitch the priming around. There were two other paper blca aed to divide the liitnN of our sec tion with me. but when thin little pink Boned reformer got Into the office he gave the whole thing to one paper. It was not long till the Noose began to fed the effect of thla despoliation. Well, the Noose and our esteemed contem porary who was also left out In the eold, trained editorial broadsides on that reglater till I almost lost confi dence In the power of the press. Final ly be gave evidence he waa bit by printing a reply In the contemporary which waa getting all the patronage. Before doing It. be hired a couple of neaka to go and work on the Noose, ud the other lonesome contemporary. It waa a political trick he had brought ut from the East. ll said In his re ply the reason why he did not give any advertising to the Noose and our other contemporary waa because the circu lation of these two would not Justify him In doing It. Then followed affi davits from these two sneaks. The wall-eyed sneak who had worked for me, setting type and running the pretu (or three weeks, made an affidavit that the circulation of the Noose, was sixty even copies by actual count, free list and exchanges Included." ' "Waa it the truth?" twked one of hla auditors. "Well, supposing It was," he said, ailing his feet off the extra chair, and there waa a gleam In his eye that caused his auditors to straighten up and draw their chairs closer. "That ain't the point," he went on. While I was oiling my gun the coroner came In grinning, and I knew I was too late. t "Your esteemed contemporary," he ays. "has already referred that chicken-breasted register to mo for an in upst as to cause," "Well. 1 haven't had any trouble with registers since, and, aa I said, the Noose hi doing nicely with public printing. Bat I felt cut un over that affair for a while. You see our esteemed contem orary dldn t have as good a case against that register as I did by eight Mplos." Imaginative Animal. The other week I spoke of the power t Imagination. A friend tells me that dogs are as much under Ita Influence aa men, and he has, In consequence, discovered a method by which a tender hearted man can bring up his pup In the way it should go without unneces aary suffering to cither pnrty. My friend's method is to keep in his yard a big butter-tub and a thick stick. TrVhen his dog has misbehaved he chains It up close to the tub, gives It a couple of cuts with the stick, scolds it nergetlcally, and then sets to work to larrup the barrel. With every blow that falls upon the tub the dog howls and struggles. By the time my friend has worn himself out upon the barrel the dog has received all the moral good that could have been afforded him by a tbundcr'ng good whipping, and is repentant and cousclence-stricken for the next three days. In fact, the Imagin ative animal fancies that he really has had a beating, and is as sorry fur him self as if he had been half-killed. My friend's motto Is, "Spare the tub and poll the dog." Being a kind man, he hated the severity that Is necessary to the training of animals, and his dis covery has removed a great burden from his mind, lie can punish his dog and Immediately after sit dow 1 and en- Joy his dinner a thing that, In the old days, could not be thought of. He tells me that he has never found the plan to miscarry, and he has tried it on doiens of dogs. Jerome K. Jerome. Determined on Revenge. A Whitechapel coster having one day recently hid a deal of trouble with his donkey, determined to have his revenge. On his way home he bought a largo aackiul of shavings and put thera in the manger. He then purchased a very large pair of green spectacles and fixed them on the donkey's noee. Had that worthy animal's Intelligence been equal to his contrariness he might have sus' oected something. But he did not and fell into the trap. Surprised at such an enormous feed he devoured the whole lot before he discovered It waa ot grass he had been eating.
