The matter was reported to Wash lngUtn, and the gentleman In charge of the htate department lnvebtlgaieu anu sent a vigorous protest to the Hic(lod government, accompanied with a ue mand for an apology, which was signed "Gresham." Tho news surprised and pleased every American heart. Some one acema to bo connected with the state department with good, old time, genuine American blood rippling through hi veins. Somebody is con cerned about the dignity of the United States of America. Yea, more; has had but little regard for the attitude of the present administration's foreign nollcv. Who was he? Cleveland was away shooting ducks, while Mr. G res. ham, his supposed-to-be secretary of Btato, is a sick man, is reported as ex pressing an opinion thatCapt. Grossman would have done better to have "heaved to." Nice American policy, isn't that? But there was somebody on deck who happened to take a different view of the case through his good, old style goggles, who sent a noti to Madrid to the effect that Old Glory must be respected even If she Bhould happen to bo upon the high seas that an apology and repara ttnnwaadim Uncle Sam for firing at his Idol, our Rag. This reminds us of what we need- recalls tho good old officers now de ceased. What we need is a secretary nf statu like Marcv. Webster and Seward; naval commanders like Job Paul Jones of '76 fame; Bulnbrldge and Tlneer and IVrrv of 1M2. Our naval commanders of today dare not, It seems, to act for fear of censure. But laU ly there has been a revival in patriotic lines. Why, even the late Mr. Tracy gave orders to the captain of the Charleston in 18U1. in these words: Washington. D. C, May 8, 1801 Commanding Offler U. S. S, San Francisco, Cal: Chilean Insurgent steamer Itala sailed fi p. m. Wednesday from San Diego having dispos sess d United States marshal!, who had seized her for violation of neutral ltv laws. After this outburst of patriotism we went to sleep, and when this present administration relieved its predecessor we slept still harder. At last when least expec ed our flag is again insulted and finds our president ducking, the secretary of ttate at home ill. and a new surprise awaits us. The question now is: Who is the Amerl can? Who was the '"Gresham" that Rant that missace to Madrid? What position does he hold when Walter Q is at the helm? Who is this bright star of Cleveland's administration? Spain should be made to apologize for firing on our flag. Perhaps the pope approves it, but we Americans do not. Let us hope Grover will go fishing more and take Walter Q. with him. Let us wish them lots of luck. The country seems safe without them near Wash ington. Let this patient and surprised nation know this "Gresham's" real name, that It may thank him and love him for his American spirit and for what he has done. The last two administrations have furnished but one patriot each. The country is in dire need of a cabinet, senate and house full of them. The law making department needs overhauling and the ingoing members need be given to understand what wo want is home rule not Rome rule. Now let Old iGlory be herself again. Let our flag ' to the breeze, and the nation that Its it let her take the consequences. loatriotic orders have not lived ir influence is beginning .even the present public i rig ton. Of course, with these ideas of American freedom in her mind, sho seldom attended her mother church. Although last week when tho "Missionary priests" were holding meetings sho was there three gilts. The nearest Roman church U six miles away, located at hock wen, whero they have a largo cathedral and several hundred members. While Mr, Calkins and his wife are staunch Prot estants, they are not church members, and never said a word to the girl about what church she should attend or not attend. All these things came to the car of Holy Father Burns through the relatives of Mamie, as they saw her drifting away, and last Saturday tho mandate came for her to come to con fesslon Saturday night. She spent the day in tears, but they compelled her Saturday night to go to confession. This was only a ruse to get her away from her real friends and get her Into tho hands of the Romans. Mr Calkins went to Campbell's to see her Sunday morning, and at first they refused to let him see her, but when he promised that ho would see her before long, even If it cost blood, thev concluded to change tho programme and let him in, He asked her if she wanted to go home with him, and she said shedld; but her tears were of no avail. They ordered Mr. Calkins off the premises and closed the door on the girl. The father, who is far more afraid of the priest than he is of tho devil, will not say a word help her, for he says "the jirlest will send him to hell, although he would rather see his daughter dead than in the place she now Is." Thev have given her her choice now, to behave herself (you know what that meant), or thev will send her to a con vent. The last place she says she will never reach, for "I will take poison first." It means almost the same to stay where she is, for sho will not be a Romanist, so it is death either way if she is not rescued from the hands of the rascals who are let run loose by the law. Shall we not say with the phophet, "How long, O, Lord! how long!" shall these fiends of hell, these corrupters of society and purity, that send so many Bihl voung women to lives of shame or sulctue s graves, or to uiw mou death the convent prison walls there to live only to serve the sensual lust of lecherous prlesU and bald-lit aded monks and friars?
