IXr Am ericas Our aitie of truth
P. A. Sequin the ei-priest of Chi-J
dgo and hi bacd of mlMionarie are I
jjst back from a lect Jrini; tour in the
western part of Illinois. Id the firt
week of February they Btoi-i.-il at Ot
tawa, 111-, a small town of .in) inhabi
tants, where popery so far has had the
upper hand in municipal i-fTairs. Prot
estant dare not speak loud in that
stronghold of Romanism. Ncw.-papers
that heard of the cominj: f Mr. Seguin
had already said, to pi an: the local
priesthood, that Mr. Sequin was not
wantel there, that there would be
bloodshed if he dared ei ma and lecture.
I5ut our ex-pr!ist never compivmises
witn the flesh and he went. At his
first meeting: on the 5lh inst.., the hall
he had rented and paid for was filled to
Its u'.inoet capacity. There wer a
got'd many Americans but the treat
majority of the audience was composed
of lri-h papist., drunken beasts, all
representatives of the holy church.
They hud filled their ockets with
stones, bottles an 1 missils of every de
scription. Mr. Seguin hud hamlly spoken 20
minutes when sticks, chairs, bottles, rot
ten eggs, etc., began to fly toward the
platform. The ex priest was giving his
experience and was at that point in his
life when in Romanism he began to eat
a man. He was explaining that in Ro
manism everybody is oblig d to believe
that as soon as the priest has pro
nounced the following magical words
"Hoc est enim ewjtui rnuoii," on the
bread, there is no more bread there but
the body, the soul, the divinity, bone
and nerves, all that constitutes a body,
and that the priest and laity were, ac
cording to the tenets of that church or
menaeerv cannibals.
"Cannibals," says Mr. Seguin, comes
from Carlbs or Caribals, c rrection of
Caribales or Canibales, the Dime of the
inhabitants of the Antilles when Colum
bus arrived there. On the upper Amaz
on, between the river and the borders
of Bolivia, live the Tupis Guaranicus
who manifest a liking for human flesh.
Cannibalism is not a sign of a low state
orcivilzatlon, for many Cannibal races
stand higher in culture than those who
abhor the custom, especially in Catho
lic countries. The more they eat Jeus
Christ in Romish countries, the higher
they stand in holiness and perfection.
"I was a Cannibal of that description,
but thanks be to the light I found in
Jesus Christ and His word, I gave it
nn 1.ri vears acro'' said Mr. Seeuin. At
( j r
this moment the missiles reached the
platform. One Tim McCarthy, sent by
the parish priest of Ottawa to lead the
mob said: "Stop there, our priests are
no Cannibals." Then it was chaos. No
body was there to check the disorder.
The mayor had promised protection,
but no protection was there. After a
while quietude was restored, but the
lecture failed to be a success. However
the lecturer held the fort. The ring
leader was arrested, but the holy me
nagery brought all its influence to bear
in packing a jury of its own. The re
sult was that there was disagreement
among them. For spite work and in or
der to bieak the meeings, the papists
had Mr. Seguin arrested twice, and
twice Mr. Seguin came out a victorious
man from the hands of those bloody
hounds. Det pite all the oppositions of
Romanists and papers, Democratic and
Republican, Mr. Seguin gained a great
point in favor of Protestantism in that
all important town of Ottawa, the seat
of our supreme court, the county seat
of the largest county of the whole state
of Illinois. The following extract
shows that Mr. Sjguln's visit in that
town has changed the opinion in favor
of our American institutions. If Mr.
Seguin did not make any money, he at
least made 200 A. P. A. men.
The Republican Times of Ottawa, 111.,
February 11, 1895, said:
After having the case of P. A. Se
guin under advisement since Saturday
Souire Lock-wood this morning dls-
charged the ex-priest, at the same time
deciding that there was nothing what
ever in the pictures to characterize
then as obscene or profane. At the
conclusion of the case it was apparent
that there could be no conviction, and
remarks were prevalent that if the court
did not discharge Seguin he would not
do his duty. Squire Lockwood was fear
less in this matter, and the stand he
took meets with the approval of all who
wero not prejudiced or bigoted, 'lhe

nated with the narrow-minded ani pre
judiced element, who, If it was not for
their extreme ignorance, should be held
leeallv responsible for their acts. Se
euin had certain rights which all good
citizens are willing to concede him, the
right of free speech, but the Republican
limes neither admires his judgment or
sense in the matter any more than
does that of his prosecutors. He did as
was predicted in these columns, precip
itated an unseemly vow in the commun
ity without doing any permanent good
for the cause he labored in or any injury
to the cause he attacked. It don'teven
look as though he made any money by
his presence here, unless he received
individual contributions from jwrsons
he succeeded in exciting to a degree of
sympathy and made them reckless in
their expenditure.
oThere are many things in the above
article which aught to be taken with a
grain of salt. However, it is well to re

We would respectfully rail your attention
lo the fact that there Is In Ihlu city a council
of the Order of United American Mechanic,
lo which we would be happy to have you
give a moment' Ihiiughl, and If favorably
Impressed, would like your name proposed
for iitctnticrNhlp.
The Order of United American Mechanic
wa organlied In Philadelphia on the Uilh
day of July. IsCt. I m II rut Inception wa fur
the protection of Mechanic and Working-
men alone, and fur a number of year lions
but opeiaiive mechanic and worklngiuen
were ai'iultted In lis iiu-mlif rshlp; but llie
great liileresla of principle Involved In It
existence, caused a departure froni that
plan, and Hie Order has for yearn existed and
exists today a all order of speculative me-
baitlCN. recognizing every one possessed of
the birth reuulreuieniM, who work for a
malntalnaiice ell her by hand or brain or
both a eligible lo membership, and number
among Its member men of every profession,
and calling In life.
The objects of till order are to aaslHt each
other In obtaining!' mpliiyiueiit; tuencouraga
each oilier In business; lo establish a Hick
and funeral fund; to establish , fund for
the relief of widow and orphans anil lo aid
members; and to aid member who, through
Providence, may be Incapacitated from fol
lowing their usual vocations, tu obtaining
situation suitable to their al)llcllon. The
membership of this order I composed uf
bile main citizens born In the United
Stale, or under the protecllon of lis flag.
This order has enisled for nearly fifty year,
and Is al present, rapidly spreading through
out the United Stale. As an American born,
and having the welfare of yourself and
family al heart, as well as that of the nalloo
al large, we would most heartily Invite you
to become a member of the U. A, M , a It I
the only Order In existence founded es
pecially to promote Hie Interests, elevate
the character and secure the happiness uf
the American mechanic and business man.
II therefore appeals lo the head and heart
of ti 1 n i who wields the pen as well as to hllu
whoswlngs the scythe or wields the sledge
hammer uf the mechanic. In Its councils, a
free discussion of principles relating tothe
fostering and care of the Interests of Indi
vidual members Is permitted ; but nothing of
political or sectarian character Is ever al
lowed to be discussed. It has no alllllal.lon
with such Institutions a Trade Unions,
Knights or Labor, Sovereigns of Induatry, or
Hie like, and desires not to control either
capital or labor, as It would be doing a gros
Injustice to many of tu member, who are
taken from both classea. The membership
of the Order Is scattered from Maine to Cali
fornia, and from all point co ues the glorious
news that the Order Is gaining great Ircnglh
In all Jurisdictions,
An endowment branch Is also connected
wllh the Order, both national and state,
which Insures those who seek Its benefit,
enabling them to leave a sum, which la In all
cases substantially and promptly paid, to
the dear ones, when death mark Its mem
bers for IU own.
It seems very strange Indeed that the
American does not feel Inclined to become
so peculiarly national In his Ideas and as
sociations as do the English, French, Ger
man, Irish, and other nationalities. Each
and all of the foregoing have their peculiar
national organizations, and take pride In
same. Hut the American Joins order after
order, composed of a mixture of nationali
ties, and lets bis own countrymen severely
alone lo the matter of secret aud fraternal
societies.
We would not belittle any uf the existing
secret beneficial associations. Far from It.
They are a power for good In the community.
But we do ask him who Is to the manor born
to turn his thoughts to home and native
land, so that he can ol n In the glad refrain:
"Thou art my native land,
I own thy fostering hand;
Though far from thee I roam,
Still thou art my home."
Americans, we of this Brotherhood appeal
to you Ui aid us In this work we are now
carrying on. You must either be for us or
against us. Choose quickly and let us show
to the country that we firmly believe la
American principles. American Industry,
American protection and American govern
ment. Strikes riots and boycotting are
terms too harsh to be applied to American
Mechanics, Bonded together by promptings
of patriotic affection, may this Order grow
and progress, until every man who calls
himself American can stand up and say n
alljslncerlty, I own no man as master of mf
actons
