A lJ 0 "THE AMERICAN SCHOOL SHOES, j I For Boys, Girls and Children. ! h Ihvv itro OiiriiMc, h ' Try i. W. N. WHITNEY J 103 South Fifteenth Street. WASHINGTON LETTER. Continued frmii rage i. published by the poe cncerg Injr tho public rt, which it-ad as follow: "We are aware that already there labor in tbla field many mm of fcW 111 and enperlenoe, who dill vnct de mands word of praise rather than of encouragement rCevertheU-, lnce the thirst (nr reading and knowledge Is tx vehement and widespread among you, and since aeconllrg to elrcum stances It can be prcdiielive either of good or evil, every effort should bo made to Increase the numb r of intelli gent and well-disposed writer, who take religion for their guide, and vir tue for their constant companion. And thlagetnii all the more leeessary in America, on aeeount of the familiar In tercourse and Intimacy between Catho lics and those who are estranged from the Catholic name -a condition of thtngx which certainly exact from our people great circumspection and more than ordinary firmness. It Is necessary to Instruct, admonish, strengthen and urge them on to the pursuit of virtue and to the faithful observance, amid to many occasions of stumbling, of their duties toward the church. It is, of course, the proper function of the clergy to devote their care and energies tothU great work; but the age and the coun try require that journalists should be equally zealous In this same cause, and labor In it to the full extent of their powers. Let them, however, seriously reflect that their writings, if not posi tively prejudicial to religion, will surely be of slight service to it, unless, in con cord of minds, they all seek the same end. "Those who desire to be of real ser vice to the church, and with their pens heartily to defend the Catholic cause, Bhould carry on the conflict with per fect unanimity, and, as it were, with serried- ranks; for they rather inflict than reKil war, if they waste their strength by discord. In like manner their work, instead of being profltaole and fruitful, become injurious and dis astrous, whenever they presume to call before their tribunal the decisions and acts of bishops, and, casting off due rev erence, cavil ana find fault, not pei celvlng how preat a disturbance of order and how many evils are, thereby produced. Let them, then, bo mindful of their duty, ard not overstep the proper limits of moderation. The bish op", placed in the lorty position of au thority, are to be obeyed; and suitable honor, befitting the magnitude and sanctity of their rffloe, should be paid to them. Now this reverence, wh'cb Is lawful to no one to neglect, should, of necessity, be eminently conspicuous la Catholic journalists. For journals, naturally circulating far and wlde.oome daily Into the hands of everybody, and exert no small Influence upon the opinions and moials of the multitude. "We have ourselves, on frequent oc casions, laid down many rules respect ing the duties of a good writer, many of which were unanimously inculcated, aswell by the third council of Balti more as by the archbishops In their meetleg at Chicago, In the year 1S93 Let Catholic wriwrs, therefore, bear Impressed on their minds our teaching and your on this point, and let them resolve that their entire method of writing shall be thereby guided. if vhey, indeed, desire as they oeght to desire, to discharge 'heir dutT well." In other words, the bishops of the pupal church are constituted by the pope the censors of the public pre.-s In the United States aid though anec c!es;ast should commit any crime, from petit larceny to high treason, the pub lie tress are enjoined from commenting thereupon. It is time that American newspaper men paid mce attention to the canoes and bulls of Rome than to the banquets and soft words of treason ous papal delegates, otherwise they will ose not only their bosted freedom as represent Uives cf the pre.s, but their liberties as well.
