The Mayor Awoke Thlr Kiitliimlnmn.
A vory dramatic incident occurred
during Mayor Harrison's nddreiw. Stop
ping toward the table, ho picked up a
email bunch of red and white carna
tions, and waving them in tho face of
the multitude, lie exclaimed: "Here are
flowers from tho grave of Thoinus Jeffer
son, a mighty hero of tho days of Amer
ican independence." Then laying down
the flowers, and picking up a sword with
a magnificent gilded scabbard, he con
tinued, with increased dramatic effect,
as he waved it around his head: "Here
is the sword of another great defender of
America, Andrew Jackson."
A great shout went up from tho
throng, and at this moment big rain
drops commenced to fall, the sky having
been gradually overcasting from tho
commencement of the exorcises,
'It is going to rain," shoutod tho
mayor, "but do you think that our fore
fathers who died for you cared for tho
rain?"
A mighty shout of "Nol" came In re
sponse, "The supreme moment is at hand,"
continued the mayor whose watch do
noted that it wns within a minute of
noon. For a moment tho multitude
stood breathless. Venerable Mrs. Staf
ford, shaking and trembling in every
limb, uprose and grasped tho cord of the
flag polo.
Unfurled the HaereeJ Kmlilein,
"The moment Is hero," shoutod tho
mayor, A roar of cannon and then,
with palsied fingers, tho old lady drew
tho cord toward her and Paul Jone's
flag, old and faded, but still a priceless
emblem of liberty, wont up to the top of
the polo In full view of the throng.
Simultaneously Mayor Harrison again
grasped tho Jackson sword, and brand
Ishing it over his head, shouted above
the roar of cheers: "Men and women of
America, let every American swear at
this moment and by this sword that ho
stands ready to dtaw his sword in de
fense of his country."
Forward to tho stand, like tho roar of
tidel wave sweeping inland, camo tho
Yokes of tens of thousands of resolute
men, and tho weaker voices of thousands
of tho gentler sex, " Yes! Yes! Wo swear!
We swearl" From tho balconies of the
structures, behind and before, to the
north and south, down from tho dome
of tho . Administration building came
liko an ochothodeep, earnest roar, "Yest
Yes! Wo swear! We swear!" HUH the
mayor stixsl with tho sword jMilnted to
ward the flag liko AJux defying tho
lightning. Tho moment was dramatic
and intense, ono of those moments that
are experienced but once in a lifetime,
There was not a man or woman in tho
vast throng, but at a call from country,
would have marched at tho moment to
the dofenso of tho flag,

Just as tho flag was hoisted, Mrs. Madge

Thov, n. Y. f
To William O. McDowell, Chicago:
The Columbian liberty bell was sounded
at the instant you closed the circuit at
tiooii of this grand Independence day, and
this ringing was followed by the playing
of niitloiial and patriotic airs on the grand
chime made by us for St. Patrick's cathe
dral, New York City. Thousands upon
thousands of patriotic citizens have called
to see this historic bell, many coinlm;
long distances. The glorious day, bright
and clear, seems to have been granted as a
pedal favor to liberty lovers. You can
announce to the 250,000 friends who have
made such splendid ottering to this bell,
that their gift have crystallised into
grand form, and that the new liberty bell
has been set ringing to aid peace and good
will throughout the whole world.
