spot prmlncing activity Is strikingly cor

I'rofi'ssor Schaeberlo cabled from Chill
that his ecltpso observations confirm his
mechanical theory of tho corona, which
regards this vast appondtigo as comiRisod
of streams of matter ejected with initial
velocities of 050 miles a second from the
un by forces which are most active near
the sun spot bows. Indications or sucti
eruptive action have been often observed
in the higher regions of the prominences.
A further confirmation of this theory If,
that the corona in outline resembled that
which. Professor Bchaetarle predicted
'"Ti-? th As far back as the
fclin am 1870 Mr. Brothers noted that
"promuitmces wore most numerous on
the aids of the sun where tho corona was
brightest," an evidence that the coronal
matter is not less than that or tho promt
nonces ejected from the sun.
Mr. Proctor, discussing the observa
tions of that eclipse, concluded! "I eon
coive we have now clear evidence of i
form of actionbut whether eruptive,
electrical or repulsive is not yet obvious
exerted outward to enormous distances
by the sun and with maximum enery
over the spot eoiios, but local, variable
and probably intermittent.
It will lie seen, then, that Professor
fichaebftrlo's theory, thresh by no means
established, accords with old observa
tions. No other explanation of the corona
has been offered save that which attrib
utes it to reflection from myriads of in
candescent meteors or cosmlcal dust cir
culating around tho sun. But this by
pothosls has. never been supported. If
the corona wero cnumy auo to meteoric
dust revolving around tho sun, we slioul
certainly expect to see it regular, ant!
not as It generally ttpiHiBrs.gaptsid, quad
rilateral or four rayed, with Immense
wings or extensions. There seems, there
fore, to be no other inference possible
but that which telescopic scrutiny has
, long suggested that the corona Is orlg
inated and maintained by countless ejec
tious issuing from tmnoath and flung
through the photosphere by the sun'i
vertical or volcanic forces.
If the final study of tho coronal photo-
ffratihs obtained sustain this view, art
ence will havo at least a working by
fcothi'&is for the determination of tho
cyclical variations of solar heat and the
corresponding effects upon terrestrial
temperatures and climates. Tho theory
in question obviously oiwns up a new
and fascinating iniiniry Into the anoma
lies of the earth's seasons which aro duo
to variations of solar actl vlty. We seem
to be thus hapiiily led to the very thres
hold of one of the grandest discoveries oi
modern science, which promises when
developed to yield a rich harvest of prac
tical results.
Now that most numerous and perfect
tihotographs of all tho principal apiteud
aces of tho sun have been secured in
Chill and Africa, astronomers shoub
give their best energies to the study of
tho data. No problem they can now at
tack can be of greater Interest or im
portance to science and tho world. New
