At U o'clock Tues day evening, the Mississippi passed the danger line and all that portion of the west side, east of State street, is under from six to seven feet of water. The register was I I feet, 4 inches, and the water waa creeping upward. This is the highest stage of water here since May 4, 18N, and at night fall a tre mendous rain storm was raging. The Minnesota and Hum rivers are ont of their banks and pouring millions of gallons of water in the Mississippi river every hour. The residents of the Bohemian flats have been forced to take to boats or to the hills and nearly a hundred families In the east end of the Kixth ward have been forced to move. The saw mills on the levee have been obliged to shut down and the water has backed up to the doors of the stove works. The base ball park at State and Liable itreoU is under six feet of water. If another rise of a foot occurs every manufacturing establishment will have to shut down and all the families 11 vine ! on the flats will have to move to the bills to the southward. Report from np the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers are not reassuring. At 7 o'clock in the evening the Minnesota was out of its banks at Mankato, and the water was above the highest water mark of 18 years ago. Taatlmonjr Introduced. Lincoln, May 8. Hid l.lfn lli'icln at the I'oli-n? As a matter of fact this earth of ours has long passed its youth, It is now verging on old nge, ami with its pules covered by everlasting ice It may be likened to a body whose extremities nre bleached and paralyzed with years. Even In tho geological period which imme diately preceded our own, and which Is known as tho postplioceim, or quater nary, great changes took place, and man has been a witness to I hem. The rivers of today are mere brooks compared to what they were then, and In North America wo can trace tho shorn lines of Immense quaternary lakes which no longer exist. But whilo this fact may Interest and perhaps surpriso us a little it does not tax our credulity so much as when we are told that once instead of snow and ice a luxuriant vegetation flourished riot far from tho poles. Indeed the French naturalist Bnffon believed that on our planet, which was slowly cooled and consolidated, life began at the poles, and that from thence it spread in the direc tion of the tropics, whereat first the heat waa too intonse to admit of any kind of life. But it is only within recent years that we have been able to get a glimpse of the ancient arctic cone, which is much more accessible than the antarctic, and what has thus far been brought to light makes Button's daring conjectnre ap pear not so very improbable. A stont crutch supported him, and ho was making prog ress when a fellow ran out and knocked his crutch from under him, leaving him helpless against the dangers bearing down on every utile.
