Tho little Zapotoc Indian boy wiih left an orphan when only throe yearn old, and at the ae of twelve, ho fled from bin cruel maxter and wan Hhcltcred by a j?ood FrandMcan lay brother, who taught him to read and write. Ho roe rapidly to dlMtlnctlon; wan for noveral yean governor of IiIm ntato, and In tho year lHT.H ho wan prenldent of Mexico. . Juarez wan tho leader of tho "Lllieral" party. Tho liberals fought for free whooln, a free prenn, and tinl vernal relitfloiiH toleration. Tho Catholic party apjiealed to the jKijie at Homo for help tooverthrow tho republic. An army of French tnwpn werownt to aid them, and Maximilian, archduke of Auntrla, wan crowned em jicfror of Mexico. Juarez wan driven to tho very boundary line of Mexico, and thero he apin aled to tho United States for help. Juarez 1 1 ml paid Ills generals and soldiers In script, to ls redeemed by the sale of the conllscnled church prop erty, and eon vents, monasteries, and liapiisltioiis were offered for salt'. No Catholic dare buy this sacred property, for tlio archbishop hud forbidden it. Willi tlie fall of the empire the way had been opened for tint missionaries. Hut no Catholic would sell any prop erty to a Protestant, and so it canio that many of those costly buildings were purchased at a very low price. Tho old convents nnd monasteries pur chased by the hoards of foreign missions were often of startling proportions, and with an overwhelming air of grandeur about tho lofty columns, broad corri dors, and spacious courts; and so this is the way It emtio about that tho In quisition is tho property of tho Metho dist Episcopal church'. Again I visited the theological sem inary at Pueblo. A large, beautiful garden, In (he heart of the city, cover ing half a block, and which had onco belonged ton fatuous convent, had been purchased for the students. Sur rounded by a high well, nothing of tho nolso and confusion of tho city could bo heard within thoso thick, high, gray stono walls. The llg-trees were laden with their purple fruit. Tho vines hung full of luscious grapes. Tho jessamines and rose-bushes were cling ing to tlio crevices of tho walls, just as fragrant and pretty as they wero more than a hundred years ago, when gentle nuns trimmed tlio vines and rested in Idoso rustic seats under those great forest trees. I could seo tdo theologi cal students with their books every where in the garden on tho stone seats by tho fountain, or under the shady trees, or on the broad corridors or balconies ol their new homo. Tho damp, dark cloister) of that sunless, cheerless, gloomy building had been abandoned. The inquisition, was vacant and deserted, but the huge key hung ifpon the wall, as harmless jiow as tho bliKidy key of the Hastlle, that I saw at Mount Vernon, tho present Lafayette to Washington. Tho Methodists claim that their appli cation was in U'foro that of tlio Catho lics. They arc Indignant, and say they probably will not exhibit. They add: "The 20,000 squaro feet dts's not repre sent, all the space given to the Catholics. That is given for their educational exhibit only. They have Bpuco for other shows."
