COONS KILL A DOG. Stubborn Four-liamtett Fight In a Penn sylvania Foreat. A spot in the heart of the old Pigeon swamp near Bristol, is strewn with the blood-stained hair of raccoons and hounds. John Reardon, James Colo man and John Foster of Bristol, started into the swamp one Saturday with three hounds on the first coon hunt of the season thereabouts. They soon ran across two coons bigger than they had ever seen before. The coons were in a dense clump of bushes. Instantly the hounds pounced upon them.but met almost their match. Had there been only two hounds, the itory would have been different. Coons and dogs whirled, bit, squealed, re Tolved, yelped or went all in a rolling mass, while the hair and fur flow, and the huntsmen could not shoot without imperiling the life of one or more of the hounds. Dogs and coons were soon covered with blood. There was no surrender on either side, and the desperate fight went on until the coons foil in the mud and were unable to bite or claw any more. When the men were able to drag away the clogs the eoons wore dead or making their last gasps. Their bodies were hauled into town in tri umph. On weighed thirty-one and the other twenty-five pounds. The wounds of one of the hounds is said to be mortal. Evry Swnlo Died, "For every mile of railway track built in Panama there have been a hundred lives sacrificed," said Thomas 8. McCarthy, of San Jose, Cal. "When the road was being constructed I was contractor In that country and did work for the railway company. In my camp there were about 300 Swedes who had recently been sent direct to the railroad works. A Swede Is a light haired person, and a blonde, you know, is more liable to become poisoned with malaria than a brunette. Out of that number of Swedes there was not a single man who escaped. Six weeks after they began to work every one of them was dead and burled. There were five Chinamen employed on the works, and strange to say not one of them was attacked. They enjoyed ex cellent health, even more so than the native negroes. How it was that they escaped I never knew, but one of the Mongolians told mo that the reason was because they smoked cigarettes." Arcngad lilt Own Mortal Wound. Last week the body of Ooorge A. Upchurch, who was murdered at his place of business at Screven, Qa., was buried in Savannah. Upchurch had been wearied of the presence of a worthless negro named Jenkins, and had ordered him off his place. Jenkins refused to go for some time, but finally went toward the house, apparently to fret his things. Instead of doing this he brought out an old musket, and ad vancing toward Upchurch fired, the hot entering his side and producing a horrible wound. Mr. Upchurch foil on his knees, and drawing his revolver fired at the negro, the bullet entering his heart and killing him instantly. Before anyone could reach him, Up church fell over, dying almost instant ly after avenging the murderous attack upon him. Satisfied th Court, A pert young Scotch advocate, whose ease had gone against him had the temerity to exclaim that "he was much astonished at such a deolslon," where upon the court was about to commit him to jail, when John Soott, after ward Lord Eldon, the counsel on the other side, interfered in his favor: "My lords, my learned friend is young; if he had known your lordships as long as I have done, he would not have expressed astonishment at any decision of your lordBhips" an apology which seemed to satisfy the court. Jlojjt NaimtR. Dogs are slaughtered for culinary purposes in considerable numbers at Munchi. The friend of man comes to table not only disguised as sausages, but dressed in various forms, and with divers sauces, without any attempt to resort to incognito. This departure in gastronomy is said to have been in troduced by Italian laborers who have ttledin the Bavarian capital. COUNTY COURT HUMS, JANUARY 1 KM. ttltM 4 fail t It i !'!
