, Columiiuh, O., Feb, 8. J. 8. McLeod,
of tho firm of McLood & Dobbie, nmr
chant tailors, hits, it is said, absconded
with about $.1,000 of the firm's money,
llobbio is one of tho largest dry gtiods
dealers of the city and, his time biting
largely tuken up in its management, he
could not give the merchant tailor busi
ness much attention. McLood, it is
said, took advantage of this to rob his
partner. Many leaves are missing
from the account tanks. McLeod last
Saturday transferred a fourth interest in
his business to Samuel II. Neil for
(1 ,700, and, it is asserted, forged Dob

was a trustee of the St. Clair Prosby

West Sitkimok, Wis., Feb. 8. The
worst storm la five years struck the
head of the lakes yesterday morning,
following forty -eight hours of clear but
cold weather, the thermometer going
as low as 8t) below Kero. Snow has
fallen all day with a northwest wind

increasing. The snow has drifted
badly. Street car traflic was suspended
at noon. One smoking car between
two engines got through from Duluth
at 4 o'clock, and then short line trsfllo

three engines and little prospects of
getting through.
Want of Vnlmmlty,
Springfield, Ilk, Feb. 8. Trustees
of the Illinois university are holding a
conference here for the purpose of de
termining what amount of money to ask
the legislature for and for what pur
poses. The annual appropriations for
ordinary expenses are $HI,o0,i, The
college wants to erect three new build
ings, one for mechanical engineering,
one for a museum and one for a li
brary. As it is estimated that these
would cost f:175,0OU it is thought the
trustees will lie resonably well satis fied
if they can secure an appropriation for
one of them. Another matter that
will probabiv be considered is the ap
pointment of a regent.

three days. It is believed Governor
Boies will consider the offer favorably,
though sonio of his friends wish him to
keep out of the cabinet and make the
race for United States senator. '
