All this domain of science) and life, however, ia so imporfoctly explored that n" extant language has ovon names for fragrunoos and porfuinos. We have invented terms for some few of the colors In nniuro and art, and we have got a long and protty cata logue of names for flowers; but nono at all for their scent. Instead of such easily concoivable nomenclatures as "ioglyk," "rhodoraol," "honey creath, "we are obliged to talk In a roundabout way of the smell of vio let, rose and eglantine, or to fall back with the perfumer's shop upon such longandugly words as "opopoxax" and "franglpannL" fcMay not the hope be Indulged that science and poolry will take up the topic of the noso anew, now that It has become a department of tho Lon don county council. Nor is it so il logical as might appear that we find our first and earliest "expert in smells'' buHlod in discovering offend ing fat mellors. Everybody at all well informed in the matter knows that the rarost and most subtle es sences and fragrances are caught by fat, and so prepared for the delioate nostrils of beauty and refined tatso. The Wandsworth inspector was on the right road, and groat results may yet arise from this tardy but sorlous and official recognition of tho social value of a well-educated nose. SCARED BY A MACHINE. In the days whon the sowing ma chine was in its earliost Infancy an Kngllsh lady in India imported ono, and for a long time kept Its mysteri ous working hid from the kon of her native servants, ono of whom wns her tailor and general noodle- worker. This functionary was tho vory slow est of his proverbially slow 'vaslo." and wasted no end of tlmo dawdling over hem nnd stitch, duo day, snys the Now York World, his tnlstroHi cume lo him wiUi yards upon yardu of some dross fabric. Then tho lady rotiroi to lior boudoir, from tho Inmost penotralla of which a sharp nnd continuous ollck and wlilrr roaches tho tailor's oars. Ho can't mnko out what tho sound is and he U much too lazy to spoculalo on It. He conllnuos to "chow hotel" and yawn ingly to ply noodlo and thrond. After an hour or two "Missis" comes buck and, throwing at Mr. Dlrzoo's foot tho raw mutorlal, now fashlonud into a completed skirt says: "There! fSoo! You wanted throe days, you sleopy follow, to llnlsh this and I have done it alroady.'' Astonished, Ulroo turns over tho drapery, examines tho soams, scrutin izes tho itltoh and satislles himself that all is proper according to tailors' rules, lie is confoundud. It passes his understanding. Thoro llos tho work done and no mistake. Hut howP llo springs from tho mat on which he has boon squatting; ho kicks over the lit Llo brass vossol which holds his drinking wutor; ho scatters right and left thread need Ins, thimble; ho stops not to put on his sandals or to adjust looHenod turban and walstcloth. Stammorlng depends on a want of harmony botweon the action of the muscles (chiefly abdominal) which expel air through tho larynx and that of the muscles which guard the ori fice by which it escapes with that of those which modulate the sound of to the form of speoch. Over either of the groups of muscles by itself a stammerer may have as much power as other pooplo, but he cannot har moniously arrange their conjoint ac tion. Nervousness is a frequont cause of stammering. It is possible that the defect in some instances may result from malformation of the parts about the back of tho mouth. The fact that stammering people are anle to sing their words better than speak them has boon usually explained on the supposition that in singing the glottis is kept opon so that there is less liability to spnsmodlo action.- Brooklyn Kagle.
