BISHOP BONACUM OF LINCOLN, Condemns Some of His Priests at "Adventurers and Outcasts." Tho State Journal, of Tuesday morn lug, Decsmber 20, 181)2, contained nr. interview with Ilisliup llonncum, of this city, In regard to the charges which it is alleged worn preferred against him by eight or nine of his oldest priests. According tp tho Journal, tho bishop snld that only (live of his priests had signed tho oliargos and that they did not send them to Suttoll, "but to a notorious oharaotor in HI. Louis, who in turn showed It to tho bishops and priests, for the evident purposo of pro Judioing thorn Against" him. lie con tinned to toll the Journal that "but live of tho clergymen luid signed the charges and whom the bishop had 11 ciplinod for their unpriestly conduct and some of whom were adventurers and outcasts from some other dioceses." Pretty strong language, is It not? About as fearful an nrraingunient as the editor of Liberty made against the priests and bishops three wces ago, is It not? We doslro to call tho alien tion of Mr. Real and all good Catholics, to tho above. Hlshop llonanum says tho document drawn up and signed by the llvo priests was sent to a "notor lous character" in St. Louis. And this "notorious character" showed it to the priests and bishops! Startling infor mation, Is it not? The priests and bishops of 8t. L tuls are then, as tho vicegerents of Christ, upon earth on speaking and confidential relations with "notorious characters!" And theso live priests who ore "outcasts and ad- vonturors," have been turning bread into tho acuta! body of Christ and wlno Into His actual blood, and havo hoard the confessions of noble, true christian wires and mothers, and par donlng their sins and placing their feet In the straight and narrow way! Mad the editor of Liberty publUhed the statement that Hlshop Ilonacutu had five priests In his diocese, who wore "adventurers and outensts" and that they were on intimate social and btikitual relations with a "notorious character" In St. Louis, what a howl would have goue up ttun the Cutbo'iios of this dioeeset Hut tbo truth Is, that there are five such priests performing the duties of Christ's vice-gerenls, under Iilshop Honaoum, with his know ledge and consent, and he only con sented to denounce them publicly, be cause they had preferred' charges against him! What Is the public to presume from this stato of facts? The fair presumption is that these "adven turers and outcasts" would have been 'jlessed, instead of buing condemned, had they refrained from preferring charge against Ilishop Donacum And (bis is called Christianity! The Catholio U termed tho only true church whose bishops permit "adventurers and outcasts to pcrrorm the priestly functions of their office, so long as they do not Interfere with the bishop. In condemning these five priests, I!ihop Bonacum has condemned himself and his church, and both at a time, when fct thttliM rtlkrf tHt''l th- jtteU . hi.. hi pe "M hitW th ..t lk tu lrlti) (hl Nt Hik mvl " If H l.np lunstniw ntsy n itemn hi ( '.tirnttti s.
