priest evidently did not like the mmli

long conimunicntloii to the Pally News,
of Dec. 24, 1891, of which and in
answer to which, the ngod lecturer
gays:
"You dure not accept tho issue on the
books and facts. If you attempt It 1
will return to Itoone, Iowa, and con
vict you of constimnto ignoranco of
Roman theology, otherwise premedi
tated falsehood to conceal the Becret
abominations of auricular confession.
You cannot and Hhall not escape the
issue by slanderous defamation, either
of the clergy of Iloone or myself. You
shall disprove books and facts or feel
their crushing weight. As to your re
cent twaddle in the Daily News, Dec.
24th, it amounts to nothing. It was an
abortive effort to create prejudice and
divert attention from the secret abom
inations of tho Romish confessional.
I hold you to the issue. I alone am
responsible for tho facts disclosed.
Your personal denunciations of tho
resident clergy, arc infamous, they are
worthy of a josuit, and will so be re
garded by all right-minded persons.
"Jura, purjina, vonitatem, quo done
ga." ("Swear, forsweai and the truth
deny,") is a josuit maxim to which you
pertinaciously adhere, but with this
you shall not escape. Tho facts are
before tho people, they will not bo with
drawn or modified In any respect what
ever. They are defiantly hurled In
your face; disprove books or facts if
you can, otherwise stand convicted of
slander and falsehood, in dufenso of
the libidinous communication author
ized in auricular confession, and now
practiced In tho United States by more
than 8,000 Roman clergy.
