On the grand stand in front of the Administration building at tho time, were many notable persons, including ineuuKeuo veragua, lineal descend ant of Columbus; tho Karl and Coun tess of Aberdeen, the Karl of Craven and his American bride, representa tive of foreign nations and other no tables, while about tho stand were grouped thousands ou thousands of people. 1 ho day wa cloudy, but oc casional brief burst of nonlight pro vented any feeling of depression. Then he briefly sketched the world-wide scope of the great exposition, which had drawn the resources and productions of the four quarters of the globe and placed them on exhibition through 60,000 exhib itors. Then he returned the sincere thanks to congress and the ofll cers of the government, to the slates which had expended 4,000,000, to the foreign nations which had spent more than 4,0Xi,ooo for their exhibits, to the citizens and corporation of Chicago which had furnished 810,000,000, to the tens of thousand of exhibitors and to the women of the nation. In closing he dwelt upon the fact that the total ofitlay for the great exhibition in eery way was largely in excess of Bl(Ki,(MM),oi)0. FEW EXHIBITS COMPLETE. ant Work Vet to lie Done In the fireat Ulllldlllg. Ciiioaoo, Jfny 1. When I'resident Cleveland declared the world's fair open to the world this afternoon tho portion of the world represented on the grounds found the great exhibition fur from perfect, Nearly all the imiNwve buildings of the exposition are practically finished, but in each gen- ral confusion reigned because of tho tardiness of exhibitors. The United Mates crovernment build ing is the only one in which every thing is in place within and without and in which there was no hurry and bustle all yesterday. All tho displays are in exactly the shape in which they will bo seen during the entire time of tho world's fair. Kven the driveways and walks and the green sward are perfect. The saino may be said of the naval exhibit on the imitation war ship. Tho Missouri building, ono of the prettiest on the ground, has been com pleted, but tne exhibit of tho native resources of the state is not complete, though it is in much lietter condition than tho majority of tho state exhib its. The other state buildings are gen erally in better shape than are the groat structures, but much is vet to bo done in all of them, especially Kan sas, Nebraska and Iowa, in which agricultural displays will be features.
