We can't understand why the rcpub
lican state central committee didn't
establish headquarters in the state
house. It would have been a great
saving of trouble and expense. It
would have saved the trouble of mov
ing the furniture down to the Lansing
block and moving it back (but perhaps
that trouble will be saved by moving it
somewhere else). The . committee
could have saved a large amount in the
way of rent, gas tills, etc. Then it
would have been so handy to Tom
Benton's oil room, and so convenient
for Johnny, and Gus, and George to
drop in and talk over the Rewick ex
posure, lay plans forlheir election, and
drop a few nickels in the slot from that
$70,000 of which the taxpayers have
been robbed through their action.
There's a bright side to almost every
thing. The lying habit of the republi
can papers has a bright side. Ihey
have so far reported a decided republi
can victory in every joint debate held
in the stale. Crounse has paralyzed
Van Wyck, Whitehead has reduced
Kem to a grease spot, Andre wrs has
pulverized McKeighan, Meiklejohn has
I cast Poynter in the shade, Field has
reduced Bryan to mince-meat, etc
Now let us suppose tha some republi
can speatcer reany snouia win a signa
victory ever an independent (if suoh
thing can be imagined.) Nobody would
ever know it outside of the immediate
neighborhood where it happened. The"
papers would of course report it under
glaring headlines, and with a long
string of adjectives, but the people
wouw set lit uuwu as omy anoiacr lie.
V
The reason is now evident why the
republicans located their headquarter
in Lincoln: It would have been incon
venienfc to mov-3 the state house f ami
u T3 to any other point.
Journal of the Knights of Labor
Pick up almost any Republican paper
in these days of strikes and you wil
find a statement to the effect tha
there are plenty of idle men eager to
take the places of the strikers. "Then
tarn to tne political coiumn ana you
will find that so great a blessing has
the McKinley bill been, workingmen
are fully employed. "A funny " old
thing is the tariff.

State Committee,
The Toiler: Grover Cleveland in
his speech to the committee let this
slip: "We see the farmer -listening
to a delusive story that fills his mind
with visions of advantage, while his
pocket is robbed by the stealthy hand
of high protection." It seems that
we have heard a "delusive story"
about the tariff, as the Mills bill only
proposed a 4 6-10 per cent reduction,
and the 1 present Democratic house
never once tried to take the stealthy
hand" of protection- from the 'dec
luded" farmer's pocket.
