The great tidal wave of political revolution which swept over the west two years ago, is now sweeping over the south. In 1890 the Intelligent voters of Kan sas and Nebraska arose as if by com mon consent, and pronounced their verdict on the republican party: "Weighed in the balance and found wanting." The people of the south were aroused too and demanded the same reforms as the people of the west. But they still thought their dear old democratic party would do something for them. Sd they went to work for reform withia the party. They sent more than twenty alliance men to con gress as democrats. What was the re sult? All but one, the gallant Tom Watson, went into the democratic cau cus, and are now sharing the ignominy of their party's surrender to Wall Street. The people of the south have watched with keen eyes, and waited with growing determination. Now they are ready to repeat the verdict of their western brethern and declare the demo cratic party "weighed in the balance and found wanting". The alliance democrats who were sent to congress to secure relief for the oppressed people of the south see the "hand-writing on the wall." Already one of them, Col. Tom Wynn of Geor gia, has declared that he will go with his people. Col. Livingston, President of the Georgia State Alliance, has claimed that he could stem the tide. The rising tide ot popular indignation has swept over him. His popularity is gone. His power is completely broken. The Southern Alliance Farmer of Atlanta gives an account of a great meeting held at Douglasville, Georgia, a few days ago. The democrats had advertised the meeting and offered to divide time with speakers of the peo ple's party. But when the hourarrived they broke faith with the people's party men and refused to give them an equal show in the debate. The adherents of the new party, comprising about three fourths of the crowd, withdrew and held an enthusiastic meetirg in a largo warehouse. Col. Llyingston remained surrounded by the very men who had been his bitterest opponents two years ago. He spoke, and after he concluded a resolution endorsing his course in congress was offered, but it was voted down even in his own crowd. So he finds himself repudiated by the alliance people and vabondoned by the demo crats. At the pence's meeting Col. C. C. Post was the first speaker. He was given round after round of applause. He said: "Friends and neighbors, I congratu late you upon this occasion and thank you for this mighty uwising of the people. "I congratulate you because you have this clay demonstrated your freedom from the bondage of party and proven yourselves worthy descend ants of the patriotic sires who founded this repub lic and made freedom of opinion possi ble in this country, and I thank you be cause I know that while you put princi ples above men and have made this demonstration primarily to prove to the country that you have renounced a party that has denied you the relief which you rightfully demanded, you have also intended to assert your confi dence in me and to refute the assertions of. your enemies and mine that I am without the support and countenance of the people of Douglas and surrounding counties, among whom 1 have been so long a resident." Here the speaker was interrupted with cries of approval and prolonged cheers. He then proceeded to tell how he had come from the north six years ago in search of health in the sunny south; how he had staid because he had found "a genial climate and a cordial welcome from a brave people." He said he had staid to attack the democra tic party in its southern stronghold just as he had attacked the republican party in its strongholds in the north. He told how he and Col. Livingston had gone to the Cincinnati conference, and had there agreed on the course to be pursued. But since then Livingston had failed to do his duty as a leader of this movement, and he (Post) had been left to choose between the betrayal of the cause and an attempt to lead the people aright. Col. Post's sDeech was received with the greatest enthusiasm and after the other speakers had been heard, he was again called out to address the crowd. Several others made speeches, among them Jack Turner, national secretary of the F. A. and I. U., who made his first people's party speech. This meeting is but a sample of the meetings that are being held in all parts of Georgia. The democratic leaders are doing everything in their power to check the movement, but they are worsted at every turn. The world is wide, and it contains all sorts of people. Every man can find company to his liking. If he chooses to associate with the vile, the scurrilous, and the corrupt, there is no law save that of his own conscience and sense of decency to prevent it. If a man chooses to give bis approval and encouragement to treachery rather than honest and sin cere effort, it is his privilege to do so, But sooner or later every man, will be called to answer at the bar of public opinion for the company he keeps and the way he uses his influence. there Unt the Vi'eb test Vrobability thattha republicans will agree to nomi nate a free coinage man for president and it is getting pretty certain that though the majority of the democratic states have put free coinage in their platforms, that the democracy will not dare to put up a pronounced free coin age man for president or advocate free coinage in its national platform. State lournal. Mail matter is whirled between Paris and Berlin, 700 miles, ia 35 minutes. It goes through pneumatic tubes. What an improvement in speed this system would be in this country and especially in Coster county, where a peopled party paper can't get ten miles from one Dorsev postmaster to another in side of two or three weeks. Merna Record. The brave spirit, the dauntless man of nerve add his prowess, who has the courage of his convictions, is a citadel of strength and tower of influence in any cause. Contend for your rights, labor for a righteous cause and tire not in labor for the advancement of your principles. Alliance Herald It is observed that northern states suffer less from cyclones than southern states: this is undoubtedly due to the McKinley bill from which "all blessings flow." Brethern let us sing. Logan County Independent. The woman who flirted with her hus band's pall bearers, while his dead body was beinir lowered to its last resting place is like our present administration. The officers are making love to pluto crats pretty daughters, while the "better hall" is being lowered in the grave of poverty. Alliance Herald, Indianola. One of the means by which Sbylock is grasping the people's throats is that of contracting loans to be paid in gold. When you ask him now what that clause in your contract means he pours into your being a sweet radiant smile and says: "Oh nothing, nothing, that's just a form we have adopted. We take any kind of money in payment." But wait a few years when the stringency in money matters is much greater and the old robber has plastered every home possible with a mortgage. He will de mand the gold then, where and how will it be found? In his own clutches to be sure, and you will have to pay bim a premium for it that you may cancel the debt you have been paping interest on all these years. And should it occur that you are not able to pay that pre mium, the sheriff will be instructed to inform you that the blessings of a home are no longer jours. PiopWs Banner, DaviQ City. Congressman Rem has made a good record. He went to congress represent ing an agricultural district, representing farmers and laborers. He has introduced several bills which, if enacted into law, would better the condition of the clas ses which he represents. He isetdcavor ing to get his bill to prevent making contracts to pay farm mortgages in gold brought up for consideration. He is doing all that any ruin could do under the circumstances. Against him and the other eight representatives of the peo ple, is arrayed the combined opposition of the money power of Europe and America. They have made a brave stand. The people will re elect them ano send an army of re-enforcements with them. Kara is a true man. Let us stand by those who have proved them selves true. Custer Beacon. The individual today who is dubbed as a "turncoat" in most cases is the one who reads and thinks for himself and when his party refuses to advocate the right and turns from a former position, for mere policy's sake, he continues for ward as he believes. The party traitor is the man who follows a principle and stays with an idea. Party is nothing if it fails to progress. Party is nothing except an orgaiization of forces for the purpose of better meeting opposing forces. Party is nothing outside of the principles it represents and when those principles are deserted the party is the traitor. The Schuyler Quill. How to Test It. Editor Alliance-Independent: In that representative sheet of cor porations and policyism, the Journal, of Lincoln, I notiee an article regarding the indebtedness of the state of Nebras ka. As for the counties, (four in num ber,) I cannot speak, but I do claim that those four counties do not repre sent the condition of the state of Ne braska. It states that a large per cent was borrowed for improvements. This is wrong. I hold that if : such was the case the state would be in better condi tion. Five hundred dollars cash, com bined with the labor usually performed to accomplish the result of such im provements purchased with the money, will enhance the value of the average farm property $1,000 If my theory is correct, this 71 per cent of purchase loans would have increased the valua tion twice that a-nount, and the tax records fail to disclose any such facts. Take Dawes county for example. $17 000 increase last March to improve with above mortgages satisfied, $13,000 for April, and still our improvements show naught on the records. Why do these papers persist in falsifying about our condition? It must be for a purpose, and that purpose is generally disclosed about two months betore election. Let the farmers make enquiry at their couaty seats and learn fromtho records what is being done. Find the amount of loan and mortgages filed for the year, also the increase in assessed valu ation. The valuation should be one third of the mortgages and loans. If it falls short of the one-third you have the per cent it tailed to improve, iry it. Kespectmny, S J. Meseraull. A Reliable Company. Rock Creek Alliance, near Green wood, held an open meeting on Satur day evening May 7th. . Hon. J. V. Wolfe and Hon. Jerome Shhamp were present and delivered addresses. The old soldiers knew that even though the dol lar they received might be lessened in purchasing power, the free coinage of silver meant better prices for their corn, their wheat, and everything they prod ace. When they appealed to the selfishness of the old soldiers, they appealed to something which does not txtet. They should appeal to the bankers and bond holders of Wall Street. The men who fought to save this nation for 116 a month were not financiers, and 1 thank God for it. We are no fighting against the same forces and the same principles that the soldiers fought to overthrow in the civil war. This man Harter was pleading for the pensioner, the widow, and the orphan. Bat when a motion was made to recommit the pension appropriation bill in order to make an increase of ten million dc liars, where was Harter then? His vote was against it. "Why not put a dollar's worth of sil in a dollar?" they ask. Suppose you have two yard sticks, one thirty-six inches long and one thirty-eight inches long. You can't tell which is right by measuring one by the other. You must test them by measuring each by something else. I tell you when you measure the silver dollar by the gener al range of prices of commodities, you will find, that silver has not fallen in price. The silver bullion in a dollar will purchase even more to-day than it would in 1873, when ;it was clandestine ly stricken down. Measure gold by the price of commodities and you will find that it has enhmced in price until the gold dollar of to day is nearly a dollar and a half. Apply that test and you will have no trouble in answering the question. Suppose you give a mort gage on your farm, and then legislation increases the value cf the dollar. It is no wonder that you are unable to pay. Fellows who cry for an honest dollar want a dishonest dollar. But free coinage of silvef is not a cure-all for our ills. (If we remonetize silver, other nations will follow our ex ample, and free coinage will hardly add over otwenty million dollars per annum to our currency. I go further, I do not believe any bank of issue should b8 re-chartered. Power to issue money is a function of govern ment that cannot be rightfully delegat ed to corporations. All money should be issued by the general fgovernment and be made a full legal tender for all debts public and private. How much should be issued? I do not know. Webster says that "know ledge is that familiarity gained by ac tual experience." No man is wise enough to tell how much. I think, however, that there is a limit beyond which we cannot safely go. But I do not believe we have ever had too much money in this country. How shall it be put into circulation? If I had my way, it would be paid out as it was during the war. It would be paid out in pensions to the old soldiers, for public improvements, etc., and we would give the people some relief from taxation. On one occasion Kellogg of Louisiana telegraphed to the republican national committee: "Claim everything." The republican party never forgot that. It claims to favor a free ballot and a fair count. Yet it rewards the man who buys votes in blocks of five. It proclaims its friend ship Jor labor, yet it imports the Chinese with their heathenism and all their vices, to compete with American labor. I believe the Chinese should be abso lutely excluded from this country, the men of other nationalities come here, and soon become Americanized. You are not ashamed to grasp the hand of a man who has come here from Germany or Ireland, nor to have your children intermarry with the children of such emigrants. But what one of you wauld be willing to let your daughter marry a Chinaman. If our gates were fully opened to Chinese emigration, I believe that in fifteen years there would be more Chinese in this country than white peo ple. China could spare sixty million and scarcely miss them. The republicans make a great noise about reciprocity. I heartily support reciprocity. It means free trade. But I take no stock in a scheme of reciproc ity that is gotten up to enable our man ufacturers to unload a surplus of their goods to foreigners at lower prices than they charge for them at home. Blaine thought he saw in reciprocity a means of swinging his party around to a right line of action. But he declared that the McKinley bill would not open a market for a bushel of wheat or a pound of pork. That is a bad kind of reciprocity. This stuffed thing they call reciprocity is like a stuffed "paddy" set up to drive the crows away, yet men fall down and worship it as some worship the gslden calf. If you believe in protection to Ameri can labor you should go east and see the long lines of men who toil in the factores and mines. How long think you such men can hold their jobs? Just so long as their employers can't get somebody else cheaper. There is not a protectionist to-day who pleads for American labor who ever gives an American laborer a cent more than he can hire his equal for no matter from what country he comes. Oxnard gets a bounty on sugar, but it is all in the interest of the poor farmer, just to enab.e him to pay better prices for the beets you see. Don't you know that beet raising cannot be made more profitable than raising corn and wheat by any such means? Why, if the gov ernment should pay the farmer a bounty for raising beets, Oxnard would slm ply pay that much less for the beets. I told him if they bad they might change their representative, for I would resign rather than vote to tax enough out of the pockets of the people to en rich a sugar-making monopolist. ' I am proud of Nebraska, and proud to represent her In congress. Nebraska has a smaller percent of illiteracy than any other state. '' Nebraska men and women stand higher in the civil service than the citizens of any other state. It mutters but little who fa put op against me, only I would like them to put up someone who will moke a nice- looking corpse. Thev say they had a very quiet con vention last night 1 Yes, a funeral is usually quiet. When ;you select a man to sacrifice on the 1 altar of a party that stands with its face to the past, it is a very solemn occasion. It makes but very little difference to me whether er not our opponents make a campaign of mud 'throwing. It will be either mud or wind, and I ' see no great room for choice between them. If the gentlemen on the other Bide choose to put their pole-cats to the front, well ana good. - 1 : - I believe in going back to the simplic ity of the fathers. ' I believe in return ing to.the ways of Jefferson and Lin coln. I have only attended one presi dential reception, and if the good Lord will forgive me I'll never attend anoth er. There's too much of the coach in Washington. I am ashamed of the faults and follies of our national capi tal. When I como home I shall take the flag of the Independent party in my hand and place it on the outer walls and stand bv it. I shall be ready to meet the champions of the opposition in de fense of our principles, and I have no fear of the result. -. Since I delivered my speech on free coinage I have , rejeived thousands of letters from all pares of the nation com mending my course. 1 have preserved them. I would rather leave them as a legacy to my children than to leave a tuno. , Again I thank you most sincerely for the honor you have conferred upon me. In conclusion let me say as I said two years ago, 'Do jour duty as I will do mine and viptory is sure.' The above is t. very .imperfect report of the speech.
