Sec. 17. It shall be the duty of the
president or rice president aud secre
tary of every such conipany.on the lirst
day of January of each year, or within
a month thereafter, to prepare tinder
their own onth, and transmit to the au
ditor of public accounts, a statement of
the condition of the company on, the
lafct day of the month preceding in
such fom as the law may direct. If
upon examination, he Is of the opinion
that such company is doing business
correctly, in accordance with the provi
sions of this act, he shall thereupon fur
nish the company a certificate, which
shall be deemed authority to continue
business the ensuing year. For such
examination and certificate the com
pany shall pay one dollar, for agent's
certificate, fifty cents. Kach company
shall pay at the time of organization,
110.00 to the auditor, all of which shall
be paid Into the state treasury and ap
plied to the general fund.
Sec. 18. Any mutual insurance com
pany organized to insure against lire,
lightning or tornado, and now doing
business in this state under the provi
sions of section 40 of chapter 43, of the
revised statutes, may with the written
consent of two-thirds of the members
thereof, accept the provisions of this
act, and shall thereupon be governed
by its provisions. Before any such com
pany shall be entitled to the benefits
thereof, the directors, or a majority of
them, shall lile.with the auditor of pub
lic accounts the declaration provided
for in section two of thW act.
Sec. 19. Such mutual insurance com
panies shall never make asseftmeats
upon their members, as provided in
section 12 of this act, until loss has first
ocenrrod unless the directors by a two
third vote order an assessment. They
shall never make any dividends.

ter county Alliance there was a com
mittee appointed to organize ft county
mutual insurance company to insure
againbt fire and lightning, -end that the
committee desires to organize as soon
as possible in order that farmers will
place their insurance with us before the
lightning season commences. And fur
ther that the committee will have some
contingent applications ready soon, and
want to place them in the bands of good,
live men, recommended by their Alli
ance, who can spend a few days in can

A general round-up of suspicious char
acters would rid the city of most of the
thieves, highway robbers and midnight
marauders. A special force of police
men should be secretly employed fer

MRS.SHEEDY'S TRIAL.
Mrs. Sheedy was arraigned before
the district court, Judge Field on the
bench, Monday morning last. Mrs.
Sheedy is supported by numerous
friends and has able counsel. The day
was passed in legal fencing, and in the
effort to secure a jury.
The elf'oru of all the attorneys
seemed to be directed to finding per
sons to serve as jurors who did not
know anything.
Mrs. Sheedy is a handnotne woman
when viewed directly from the front.
The profile view is not so prepossessing.
It is difficult to conceive that so fair a
woman could be guilty of the heinous
crime she it charged with. But it Is
aUo dillicult to conceive of any crime
so heinouit that any woman might not
tie driven to it by a man of Jonu
Hheedy's character.

ready making its arrangements for the
4th of July. The committee of general
management of the proposed Alliance

Saturday, May 22d, was the time set
for the next committee meeting at the
same place, at which time all these com
mittees are requested to be present for
council, and arrangements. Other
needed committees will be appointed at
that time.
An attempt was made to burn tbe
new Milburn building at Arcadia one
Bight last week, but the fire was discov
ered in time to prevent any great dam
age. Loss $25,000.
Of the farm land to be used by the
Geneva Indian School, 100 acres will be
planted to broom corn during the next
few weeks. The broom makers are
now busily engaged preparing the seed
forth" ground.
The Methodist people of Ulysses are
talking up an excursion to Lincoln some
time in May, and a ran out to the peni
tentiary, where all hands will be given
a chance to see the inside of the bad
people's work house.
A young Omaha Indian attending the
Carlisle school, whose purpose it Is to
preach among his own people, was re
cently examined by the Carlisle presby
tery and made a very creditable show

Now that Rosewater has reduced the

Ex-(Jovernor Jcssup, one of the most
prominent citizens of Bridgewater,
Conn., has gone insane. He was taken
violently ill a few days ago, but refused
to allow a doctor to come to the house
and lived solely on the faith cure. Jes
sup at length conceived the idea that he
was a second Abraham and that the
Lord required a human sacrifice. Thurs
day being left alone for a few minutes,
ho prepared for the terrible alYair by
constructing an altar in his led room,
around which he piled a heap of com
bustibles. Then he caught his little
grandchild, one year old, and placed
her on the altar, and prepared to ignite
it. The child's cries attracted a mem
ber of the family, and the eld mau was
nearly killed in the struggle to restrain
him.
