HOW TO SAVE THE TEETH.

importance. It preserves youth, beauty,
the facultie3 of speech, and prevents un
told suffering, such as only Burns could
describe when he said : "I am suffering
from that little devil, the toothache, the
hell of all diseases. It feels as though a
thousand iniDS were dancing on my jaw

pulp, and yet
people think
such fissures are
not decayed enough to fill until they
break through and ache.
The teeth should be carefully examined
the fissures opened, and the softened den
tine carefully removed, and the cavity well
filled with gold. Such treatment will pre
serve the tooth or teeth from five to fifty
years, according to the state of health and
rj'iality ot tooth. Soft teeth may be filled
with tin foil or other plastic material and
saved several years with occasional patch
ing. This form of caries is generally associ
ated with some dyspeptic symptoms, such
v? furred tongue, headache over the eyes,
cold feet and hands, sometimes flatus in
the stomach and bowels. The liver is fre
quently congested, indicated by the tip of
the tongue being red like a strawberry,
and sometimes sore. In chronic or organic
disease of the liver there is frequent pain
in the right shoulder, and back o. the
head, with soreness in the right side. Dys
peptic symptoms arc of every grade.
NEBRASKA DYSPEPSIA
differs very much from dyspepsias in the
east. The patient grows thin i.i flesh,
pale and sallow, with .gradual loss of
strength, the skin dead and lifeless, the
hair gets dry and falls out, the heart flut
ters and palpitates, there is much uneasi
ness in the stomach and bowels, with
great irregularity, bloating, and an un
comfortable fullness, gas, flatus, or wind
in the bowels, great urgency to stool come
on suddenly with forcible dejections with
'hin frothy fermentations, and much fla
tus, alternating witii costiveness.
NEURALGIA.
At length the blood is reduced almost
to milk and water; then comes neuralgia
in the left side, in tlie face, feet, and
hands, cramps in the muscles, most fre
quently n the lower extremities. There
is ood reason for believing that man is
not exempt from the diseases of chickens
and hogs.
THE CAUSE
of dyspepsia and bowel complaints de
pends upon fungi in the bowels, stomach,
and liver, which inhabit the mucus mem
branes, typho-malaria, and bad Avater.
These diseases do not yield to the ordinary
lemedies.
THE REMEDIES.
"We give medicine to destroy the fungi
in the bowels, and our patients get well in
a few days.
The teeth may be hardened by the use
o phosphates. In severe cases of dyspep
sia here will be large quantities of
white chalky deposits in the urine, the
brain and nerves suffer in proportion to
the Avaste. Dyspepsia is easily cured if
yon know how.

lest it go through the foramen of the root,
and inflame or kill the periostuni,'and the
tooth die and ulcerate.
The dead pulp should be removed, and
the cavity temporarily filled with anti
septic filling until the tooth is well, two to
three weeks, and then carefully fill to the
apex of the root, and it will be saved for
several years if the patient is healthy and
clear from erysipelas, scrofula, and other
blood diseases. Otherwise it had better be
extracted.
THE RHEUMATIC DIATHESIS
is indicated by black rings around the
necks of the teeth. The sulphuric and
iactic acids not only corrode the teeth, but
turn any silver fillings black in a few days.
These acids, and uric acid in the blood, are
the causes of rheumatism. The liver and
kidneys do not perform their office well,
and any excess in the use of strong meats,
with exposure to cold and dampness, is sure
to bring on a severe attack of rheumatism.
The urine generally deposits a dark reddish
or brown sediment. Rheumatism is easily
cured by the proper treatment, which is to
eliminate the poisonous acids from the
blood. The perspiration has a stroug, sour
smell, as well as the breath. To prevent
the formation of these acids, is to prevent a
return of rheumatism, and save the teeth
from final destruction.
GOUTY TEETH FBOM INHERITANCE.
The above cut shows well the appearance
of the teeth from inherited gout. Dark
brown grooves transverse around the necks
of the teeth generally indicate the gouty
diathesis. There is also a strong tendency
to deposits of brown calculus on the "teeth

Gout is rampant in Nebraska 3 well as

in most ot the .Northwest, and causes a
host of stiff joints, asthma, apoplexy, and
sudden deaths from heart disease. It
would be safe to say that more than three
fourths of the cases called rheumatism and
neuralgia are of gouty origin.
Gout is a near kin to lheumatism, in
dicated first by dyscracia of the. stomach,
colicy pains, and flatulency in the bowels,
and discharge of black fietes. Second,
sharp, shooting pains in the feet and legs,
next in the hands and fingers, sudden
cramps in the muscles; at length it sud
denly seizes the great toe about 2 o'clock
at night, and successively the knee-joh.ts
and joints of the hands, heart, lungs, and
brain.
The urine deposits a pink or ro3e-coiored
sediment on the vessel; if the patient
is much debilitated, a white amorphous
sediment will settle in the bottom of the
vessel, indicating the amount of injary
done to the brain and nerves.
The immediate cause of gout, from
the mildest neuralgia to the severest
fit of gout that renders the patient
suddenly helpless, is an excess of urate
of soda in the blood. This deposits
in the joints, heart, lungs and brain;
and in tho kidneys, causing the
sharpest and severest pains in the
region of its deposit. It makes many
enlarged, distorted joints, and help
less cripples. It is the mother of
most Kidney diseases, the harbinger
of asthma, the father of sudden deaths
from heart disease, and a frequent cause
of insanity, and tho most frequent cause
oi apoplexy. The causes of urate o
soda are: First, alkaline water; second,
excessive use of cake, pastry, strong
meats and strong drinks, with sedentaiy
habits, excessive mental toil, etc.
In England, too much wine and beef;
in Germany, too much meat and beer; in
France, too much wine and pastry; in
America, too much sausage, mince pies,
cake and whisky.
The disease may be speedily cured by
using pure, soft water, a light diet, vigor
ous exercise, and proper medicines to dis
solve and eliminate the urate ol
soda from tho blood. The great num
bers Ave see on the streets with
stiff joints, hobbling along with canes,
are iu constant' danger of apoplexy, or
sudden failure of the heart, or gravel,
Avith all its tortures; yet they are not
awaro of their danger, and rarely realize
the importanca of preventive means, or
understand the real nature of their mal
ady. It would be a wise measure for our city
lathers to construct au artificial lake near
the Antelope well, 10 or 20 times the
size of the well now in use, that Ave
might have an abundant supply to Avater
every yard in the city.
The legislature could well afford to
give us a donation so as to have Avater for
the state capital park. The very trees in
Lincoln have been watered Avith alkaline
water until they look gouty.
