BRUCE FULLERTON.
That Joplin miner is not the only man
in a hole these days.
Eleven more days and a lot of aspiring
candidates will be out of their misery.
The farmers who opposed reciprocity
because it removed their protection are
beglning now to e the benefits of the new
order. They are going to secure a down
ward revision of the tariff of the things
they have to buy.
There is a woeful shortage of water in
the south and that's prohibition terri
tory, too.
Really we feel sorry for the man who
is taking his politics too seriously these
August days.
A partisan supreme court is not calcu
lated to increase the respect demanded
for the courts.
"What is beer?" queries Mr. Wiley.
Now what on earth is the Doctor trying
to involve us for?
Those grasshoppers will have to go
some if their egg-laying record keeps pace
with that of the Nebraska hens.
Anyhow, the extra session of congress
relieves us of a lot of jaw-talk-we stunts,
for which let us be truly thankful.
We greatly fear that the yellow streak
of the Nebraska republican insurgents is
growing wider and of a deeper hue.
By this time President Taft is doubt
less convinced that he opened a regular
Pandora's box when he pried the lid from
the tariff question.
Seattle has just buried a huge hammer,
emblematic of the "knocker." Lincoln
.and Nebraska should go Seattle one bet
ter and bury the "knockers."
Governor Marshall of Indiana is now in
a position to realize how easy it is for a
politician to eliminate himself from pres
idential consideration.
Mr. Wickersham of Alaska is again
proving to us that there is nothing in a
name. The Alaska Wickersham is really
trying to do something worth while.
Say, remember how we were worrying
about the wheat crop a month or two
ago? Well, just read the reports of big
yields and cheer up. You en n't beat old
Nebraska.
Southern cotton mills have been forced
to close down because of the prevailing
drouth. Haven't heard of any breweries
closing down for a similar reason, however.
.;, Police Judge Crawford of Omaha has
decided that it is not illegal to shave a
nian on Sunday if the barber is not
remunerated until the next day. This is
the same police judge who discharged an
employer charged with violation of the
child labor law on the technical point,
raised by himself, that the employer was
arrested as an individual and not as the
president of the corporation.
