A FINE OLD FOSSIL
Uncle Joe Cannon says it is high time
to quit muckraking and go to building
men up instead of tearing them down. It
all depends upon the definition of "muck
raking." Uncle Joe definies it as expos
ing the men who have been using public
office for the purpose of fastening special
privilege about the necks of the people,
lie does not say that this is his definition,
but that is what it is. The plain peoples
know that what Cannon and Roosevelt
and others call "muckraking" is merely
bringing to light the devious and sinu-.
ous methods that special privilege has
used to enslave the aforesaid plain peo
ple. The so-called "muckrakers" have
served a splendid purpose, in that they
aroused the public to a knowledge of
how it had been gouged by the special in
terests, and once aroused the public has
set about remedying matters. The re
sult of this has been a terrific howl from
special privilege and graft thus exposed.
When you hear a man complaining about
"muckrakers" it is safe to say you .ire
listening to a man who has been caught
with. the goods on him..- .
