"I do not feel like Mr. Williams of
Palmyra," writes L. B. Smoyer of
Syracuse, Otoe. "I think the debt was
legally contracted and ought to be
paid; and I am willing to pay my part
of it." In justice to Mr. Williams, Sec
retary De France explains that Mr.
Williams is not only willing to put his
shoulder against the hand-spike, but
that he has done so to the extent of a
crisp $5 note, which he contributes
personally to be credited to Otoe coun
ty. Mr. Williams, like many an
other good worker, is more inclined to
help do the heavy lifting than to stand
by and do the grunting while the oth
ers work."
Once in "auld lange syne" the state
farmers' alliance came to the relief of
the people's independent party, and
lifted a big burden of campaign debts.
And where these alliances still exist,
there is still the old time feeling of
helping the good work along, not only
by good-wishes, but also by good acts.
This week L. F. Frank of Axtell, Kear
ney county, sends in $11, of which $1
is his own contribution and $10 is do
nated by Fort Kearney Alliance No.
278, the oldest alliance in that county.
Mr. Frank says: "Fort Kearney Al
liance No. 278 is the oldest alliance in
Kearney county, and contributes $10 t:
the campaign fund. The original char
ter was granted in 1881. Bearing an
historic name, it has well earned a
place In the reform history of Kearney
county and the state of Nebraska. Its
members have always been found
wjrking earnestly Jor every measure
that was for the good of the great
mass of the people. Some of its most
zealous and active members have
joined the silent hosts of the dead, but
those who survive are animated by the
same spirit that prompted them to or
ganize the alliance 20 years t-go. 'Equal
rights to all and special privileges to
none' has been the watchword, and for
this they have labored. The members
of this alliance have given a great deal
of time, money and lab6r to the reform
cause and are still in the field, as 13
evidenced by this contribution. Would
that the true alliance spirit animated
every populist today, and this debt
would Boon be wiped out. It is a debt
of honor, and every member of the
party should look upon it as such and
do what he can toward paying it. Let
us contribute our mites and it will
soon be done." Such letters give the
ways and means committee courage to
go ahead with its work. But its bed
is not all roses and no thorns as the
following paragraph will show. ,

"Your letter of February 1, 1901,
was received, read and laid aside. Yes
terday I received a marked copy of
Nebraska Independent relative to the
same thing, i. e.: the collection of
money. You do not seem to under
stand why any old pop or democrat
should not with pleasure and alacrity
cough up to defray, or help defray,
any expense which a committee, with
which his voice or influence amounts
to nothing, sees fit to contract. It is
plain to me that if we, the fellows be
low, do the work, there are plenty to
take the honor. I cannot tell you all
I would like to for want of space. But,
in what way, I would ask, are you fel
lows up there different from the re
publicans? In a great majority of
cases, simply this: You are out and
they are in. Look, if you will, how the
institute at Beatrice was managed for
the last few years. Look over the
whole field where patronage was to be
distributed and see how carefully a
gang ; of politicians was working to
fasten -themselves onto some teat
and let the devil take the rest. Why
don't they help you now?
"Men, who I supposed were manly,
last fall cursed and threatened and ar
gued in order to get the Poynter ad
ministration supported, so that they or
some of their relatives might hold
some job thereunder. T know whereof
I speak. . I am opposed to this sucking
system of ; yours whereby you would
make the many help carry a few who,
if not wholly disho' rable, are, to say
the least, politicians and the name
implies a good deal. I know a number
of them, having met them at county
and state conventions, and I do not ap
prove of their methods and will not
contribute to-support then.
"The country patriot an" voter is all
right when work, money or otes are
wanted, but afterward, when all is de
livered the town politician comes
meekly in and claims the reward. As
committeeman of Fu.ey ; township I
wish to say that 1 will not ask any of
my friends or neighbors to pay any
money over to the party which .seems
to consider us of no higher Importance

"A Popocrat" out at Superior has
this to say: "Please find enclosed $1
to help pay off the populist party debt.
I am a democrat, but I am not one of
those who vote the name instead of for
principle. I believe in the most dem
ocratic government possible. Whoever
believes in the mass of the people con
trolling the government is a democrat,
no matter what party he may affiliate
with; but I do not consider a man
democratic when he votes with a par
ty that is controlled by corporations.
"I see in The Independent that Mr.
Plumb of Colfax county does not want
to be bothered, any more, and Mr.
Houtz of Boone is sore because his
county candidates were defeated.
These men are weak, and would make
good republicans. The populists in
Nebraska have had most all of the
state offices, the United States sena
tor, and a majority of the congress
men what more could they ask for?
If the democrats and populists had
not fused, the republican party would
never have lost an election in this
state. I am for fusion, because the fu
sionists gave Nebraska the best gov
ernment she ever had and the fusion
forces can win again if they get out
and work. ,
The gold bug democrats are going
to control the next national democratic
convention which will mean, a new
reform party, and the followers of Bry
an, Towne, Allen and others will have
to organize this party. So Messrs.
Plumb, Houtz, and others had better
be ready to take part. I do not care
what name may be adopted for this
party, but let the principles be what
we want. Fuslonlsts in , Nebraska
should feel encouraged, because the
corporation lawyers are in full control
of . the republican party and are at
their old tricks. So let the fusion
forces get out and elect some good
man judge of the supreme court next
November..,
James Carpenter, committeeman of
Lincoln township, Franklin, (Wilcox),
sends in $2 for the Independent collec
tion and reports that his neighbors
are very hard run on' account of last
year's crop failure. He does right In
