There fa no longer any doubt of the
object iv point of the republican state
campaign. It is the next legislature.
From accurate report of conversation
held within the rooms of the republican
state committee thi paper is able to
state that the whole fight from now on
will be concentrated on securing control
of the legislature id 180!) and electing a
republican to take th seat now htdd by
William V, Allen,
Earlier in th campaign there wa a
time when th republican manager ex
pected to make a sacrifice of th rest ol
t he state ticket and by hard work pull
llayward through. That wa before
they heard report from the back pre
cincts, It in admitted now around re
publican headquarter that this cannot
bidoue. We might go further and say
that the shrewdest republican traungcrs
cencede the defeat of their stat ticket
by 10,000, Rut, thl concussion make
th ftiibt to be waged for tha legislature
all th keener,
There I reason for this. In th first
plaits th question of th reconstruction
of our entire currency system is now
pending befor congress. The senate as
now organ Ifd is nu almost Insuperable
obstacle in lb path of th bank monop
oly bills, designed to destroy th green
backs and turn th issue of paper money
over to corporations, It is necessary
to get ths senate r-orgnlsd in order
to puss such a bill and there I no on
whom th corporation want left at
horn In th reorganintlon mora than
Allen, of Nebraska, Thi fact make a
bond ol connection at one between th
republican campaign for tha Nebraska
legislature and tbet.re.isur of the na
tional sound money league and great
banking associations. These men don't
ear so much about th Nebraska state
ticket. They ar vitally Interested Id
th election of th next United rHates
senator. They want a valuabl privi
lege worth to them at least f 30,000,000
a year. Hcnator Allen's vote stands in
th way of their getting It. Doe any
man doubt that they would be willing
to spend half a million in Nebraska to
get that vote out of th way?
IVr are at least tweuty-flv legisla
tive districts In the stat where' the
party difference of vote I less than 100,
The throwing of thosa twenty-five dis
trietaon way or Iba other makes a
d fferenc of fifty vote Iu the legislature.
There is a purchasable class in every leg
islative district, Tha money this fall is
to be smt to secure that purchasable
claa for the republican legislative ticket.
Twoyearaago not much attention
was paid to the legislature. The fight
wa concentrated on the effort to beat
Bryan In bis own stat. Tf I E RKI'UR
UCAN MEMREIWOP" I'll K LAHTLEO
IHLATL'UK ADMITTED THAT OVER
110,000 WAH KI'ENT FOIITHIH I'UR
I'OHK IN DOU0LAH COUNTY ALONE.
How much do you think will be spent
thi fall to defeat Allen? How much
with a banking bill pending wortn fifty
million a year to th great banking
corporation of the country?
If you waut to keep thi eoun'ry fre
from corporation control of it currency,
if you want to keep the greenbacks fro m
deatructiou.go to your republican neigh
bor, present the fact to him, aak him
whether he favor such policy. If he
doesn't get bis vote for t he candidate
(i.r the legislature who will vote for the
return ol William V, Allen to the United
States senate.

The net result of th system is that the

It, particularly in clone counties, by
"palug the price" to the campaign
leeches who flourish in every community
and refuse even to vote utiles they are
paid for it. It is tha universal observa
tion that few county ofilciul com out
of ofllc so well off a they went In ex

paign expenses. In close counties a can
didate' campaign expense for re-election
are simply enormous.
The Inijki'kndknt knows counties
where the sheriff spent $2,500 for re

urer's election cost him $1,500, Two
good laws for the next legislature to

Talking about th difference between
democrat and populists th right kind
of democrats did you ever notice th
difference between At.torney-Oeneral C,
J. Hmy th and hi populist colleague in
th state bouse? Did you old line pops
ever notice It when Hmy th went out on
th stump and mad one of hi rattling
speeches, full of brickbat of wil that
mail the rascal howl wherever they
hit and full of sound governmental doc
trine did you ever notice any difference
between him and the rest of us? And
when it come to hard office work and
prosecuting public criminal isn't Hmyth
ahead of the pop if anything? Now
there' a reason for all thi. And thi I
th reason: Hmyth has been a populis
tic or Jeffersonian democrat for years.
He isn't on of th fellows who bung
onto 0 rover Cleveland's coat tail until
th breeching broke and then had a
change of heart. Away back In 1887
when it wa Representative Hmth fn m
Dougla county, th house journal rec
ord how that he was on th same side
a now. There Is no trouble between
sincere anti-monopoly democrat like
Hmyth and the most aggressive popu
list. And that is why populiata all
over th stat of Nebraska are glad (d
the privilege of working and voting this
fall for that friend of honest government
Attorney-General Hmyth, prosecutor
of public plunderers.
Th Raleigh Caucasian (Senator
Marion Butler' pnwr) contain column
after column of report of populist
county convention iu that state in
which the populists and republican put
up union ticket against the democrat.
It I noticeable in reading these report
that there I no friction or disagreement
whatever and that as a rule the joint
ticket have two or three populists to
one republican. These things are men
tioned here, first, because they are facts
in politics aud our readers are entitled
to all the fact. Second, because repub
lican here in Nebraska have been wont
to abuse populists aud populism as rep.
resenting all thai is wild and wicked iu
politics) ami it n.'i.y be instructive to
them to know that their party and party
m imager iu th south are glad to join
hand with tiie men 111 the south holding
exactly the same views that populist
here bold. Tliere is no populism in
America with so much "pop" in it cs
that of the south where republican are
eager to fuse with it.

VAPKll MONEY DAY.
Paper money day at Omaha las
wek wa of ervice to hutnaiity, 1
defined tiie future financial struggle
in the United State.
This in spite of Congreiinan Mc
Olcury'a refusal to explain or defend
hi own bill to retire all government
paper curreney and in its ateiid per
mit the banks to isaue all pajier mon
ey, Kveryone preaent at Omaha un
derstood the reason for Congressman
McClcary's refusal. It was because
the presentation and discuaalon of hie
bill at this time would have a power
ful influence upon the congressional
election thia fall especially iu th
west, liatiber than risk the effect of
it discussion Mr, McClear preferred
to be taunted by Tonne aud welted
by Warner and William for ' k re
fusal. MeCUutry and all hi aoclaUw
know that a very large element in the
republican party 1 opposed to tbe de
struction of greenback and silver
certiik'ii'U's and the subtrtitutlon of
bank note in their place. They dou't
want that made an issue ia this fall'
election. Yet they know the qiiea
tion k coming to iaaue in the next
congTes and that tbe rulinsj elememt
in republican council 1 pledged to
push such a bill through congress ami
give it the president's signature.
So in spite of the evaaion of Cong
ressman McCleary tbe isaue la defined.
The addresses by Kdward Atkiiuton
and V. W. Smullcy and Mr. Robitisoa,
but most of all by Congressman Fow
ler of New Jersey, mode the coming
moiiiewtou confllc for tbe control of
tiie national currency aa clear aa a
wewtero Nebraska land scape.
Tliere were a good many revelation
nuule on both sides In that oouven at
Oiraiho, destined to become (Lietwric.
It was interesting to note tbe poin-to
of strength urged on each side, some
of wblcb the other side was evidently
not prepared to squarely meet. And
in tie interest of a full understanding
and tuiy of the subject be Indrpeiul
ent given a brief summary of those
point in Congressman Fowler's pa
per. Th proposition Is flrwt, tkat tliere
are two things money ami currency.
Money i the standard to vb!ch all
val'iwe are referred. Currewj in
what may be used to effect exchange.
Checks, for instance, are c'urreucy.
In the promised sytnti-m gold wi'J 1
tiie only moneybecause it wi!l be
tiie standard of values. Rut tiie busl
iieaa of tbe country wMl 1e dont en
tirely with currency. The b!f traniv -nctiona
will be done witli bank check.
T1ie small tranution wih be done
with bank notes.
All government paper will be allied
in and retired. The rcon for doing
this is that tiie government has no
connection with ttie volume cf busi
ricws of the country and cannot regu
late the volume of money ta corre
spond. The bank have enih connection
witii the busineaa arid cao jts'd will
reg-iilnte tiie volume of theln notes to
(vrresK)nd. In order to do this they
will be given the right to iswie notea
which alinll lie a first lien against
all their nsveta. llie vo'iinie will ta
refnilaK'd by Hie nisei vea.
For ine'tance under thia ayatem ho
bnnke in (i wheat region would issue
enough not- to move tiie wheat
crop. When the crop waa moved a
large irt of this money would be re
turned to tliem.
Canada and Scotland have tried1 thii
sj-Ktem, In Canada away out in Mani
toba money ia Inoned to good solvent
farmers at 3 per cent sr annum while
their neighbors in North Dakota have
paid .1 per cent a month. Iu Scotland
the system haa prevui'ed for over a
hundred years with practically the
anil ie results.
No limitation I placed on the bank
rnte for the same remon that none
la placed on the issue of check, both
depend upon the solvency of tbs one
