Sept. 15, 1898 THE NEBRASKA INDEPENDENT. Nebraska Independent. FROM OHIO. There is one thing about our mail order business which can be said by very few houses in this country; we never lose a customer who has once patronized us through the mails. Our customers sometimes move and get scattered and change about from one part of the country to another, but they never forget us be cause they never find a place where they can match our prices and they never meet anybody who has any thing but good to say about us and our goods. The following letter from Ohio is only one. We have hundreds from every state in the union that say prac t tically the same thing: 624 Fremont street, Helvidere, O., Aucr. 7. q8. Ne braska Clothing Co. Omaha, Neb. Gentlemen: The goods arrived 0. K. this a. m. and are perfectly satis factory. Although you did not send samples I felt sure of being suited as you have never yet failed to treat me well. I have worn Nebraska goods for six years and expect to wear them as long as I wear clothes as I have never found any tc approach them for the price. People here are surprised at the price I paid and I en close some names for your catalogue. Yours truly, Our new catalogue contains some revelations, for it. Address Department J They think it some western nonsense, Tluy refer to the people all constitu tional amend meat and bonded Ja il eltinlne, for public Improvement. t would bo rotkercu,ml)ernie to refer every measure of legislation to a vote of the people. Why not provide that all law passed by a two-third vote of both house and signed by the tnv enior should not need a vote 01 the js-oplc? For one we are not afruid to trust the people. ut there are lots of monarchists in the east among the wralMiy classes. They are afraid of the free use of the ballot among the jx;oile, among the common people es pecially. Russia has taken the longest step of any crown country for many years toward graining the confidence of the common people. Hlie has promised that all Europe disarm, which means that every five lalxring man shall not ls made to suppert an idle soldier and that government dceiid more tipon voluntary armies as do the United Mutes of America. EurojMj cannot un derstand how bt that we have to strike the drum in defense of the prin ciples of our government, and men from every walk in life flock to tlie ting, and when put into the field or navy they for outdo the machine eol--f" ofi''"roPe- To whipcr it hon estly, all Europe begin to fear Am- ,we11 " "I" her. What will the Yankees do in the question over there? The republican complain that the state school levy has been increased. True, but the state assessment has been greatly decreased, so in order to keep up the standard of ous schools the levy must be higher, for we want the same amount of money. Let ev ery thing else sufferrather than our schools. Their influence Is lasting, while the pinching to pay taxes is only for a year or two. Pinch every other state institution rather than our public schools. The farmers are raising sugar beets nil over the state of New York, an acre or two in a patch. There are several sugar factories in the state, but they nre not controlled lor the trust they ure in this state. So fur they claim that their beets are just as sweot as they are in Nebraska or any where else. I'orter, who is in Havana on a special commission from the United States government to study the econ omy and financial aspects of the sit uation, is regarded with suspicion by the party of free Cuba, as indicating the establishment of an American policy of guardianship. Mr. I'orter is preparing a revision of the Cuban tariff, which will probably be protective of Cuban industries, and is acquainting himself with every de tail of local taxation. In this work he is assisted by a capable staff. For the present his efforts are only prelimi nary, as, until after the definite settle ment of peace, it will be impossible to stablisb the new regime. But his efforts and inquiries taken together with the announcement that the American troops will be sent later to occupy the Island which had hitherto been doubted by many have had the effect of provoking protests irons the more rapid Cubans, who are holding meetings and adopting resolu tions against "encroachments upon our rights as citizens of a free and in dependent republic of Cuba, by the es tablishment of an American protecto rate."
