mtti February 24, 1898 THE NEBRASKA INDEPENDENT. ABOUT OUR NAVY. Stronger Than That of Spain and Much Better Equipped. The United State and Spain are not unevenly matched in respect of a navy on paper. An examination of the de tail, however, show that in naval mat ters an in all ulso Hpain iudulgo la dream and dul union. Ut us discard all "projocted" war ships, all made-over iron and wood ves suls, and compare the two navies as they would meet each the other. The steel veHMels of modern tyjw are alone worth considering, bwsause other vmshi-I can be eaeily obtained on short notice, and it is therefore a matter of minor Importance which nation has the more of them at the present moment. Of biittln-shlps Spain has only one. The l'elayo,of 0,t0() tons, is an eioellent war vessol so far as protection is con cerned, but Its armament Is not espe cially formidable as battle-ships go. It has two ia,5.iich nuns, two ll-iueh, one (i.a-inch and twelve 4. 7-lncb as a heavy battery. The Iowa of our navy ha a much more effective battery lu its four 12-inch gun, elRht 8-lncliaml sis 4-inch. We have altogether seven battle-ships, each carrying tremendous batteries of the most approved and supposedly ol the most (Jung'Toii modern types. Hpain has no sea-going coast-defense ships, while we hv six, carrying thirty heavy guns and fifty-two guns In second ary batteries. And these ships are to all intent and purposes butMo ships. Many naval experts regard them as far mora daugeroua, than the o called battle ships. In the class of non sea-golng const de fenders Hpain ha two vessels ouly, and they carry but nine large guns, we have fourteen of these floating but noii-sea-going forts, and they carry thirty lurge guns. Hpaiu has seven armored cruisers, carrying 20H large guns. But they are not so new or so well equipped or so dangerous as they ei to be when one reads about them. We have only two shis New York and Urooklyn that fall in this class, and they carry seventy four large guns. Hut not only are these more formidable than any ol Hpain' ar mored cruisers, but also some of our protected cruisers are more worthy of this class than several of Hpaiu' that are put in it. Of protected and partially protected cruisers the most attractive and sensi ble kind of modern war vessels we have sixteen, all made of steel, all in good condition, all equipped with the b at pos sible armament and all entitled to the name of ocean greyhounds. Hpain has only five steel vessels of this class and ten iron vessels. We are therefore stronger and Hpain Is weaker at the two most important points heavy worships for bombard ment and harbor defense, and swift, well-armed, eusily inaunged cruisers. How much have we spent fortheee battle-shifis against which such grave charges of unwieldineee, unseaworthi ness and uselesHiiess are brought? The first cost of our six sea-going battle-ships was as follwr. Indiana t.020,000 Iowa 3,010,000 Maine 2,500,000 Massachusetts ,',020,000 Oregon 2.1H0.000 Texa 2.500,000 Total 117,230,000 Then we are now building five battle ship which will cost at leust the follow- KearsaKe :,150.0()0 Kentucky JJ.l. 10,000 Alabama .1,750,000 Illinois ajRb.OOO Wisconsin .1,750,000 Total $17,550,000 Thus there has lieen exjiendwi or is in process of expenditure $.'14,780,000 for ships of 11 tye that is, to say the leust of it, under reat suspicion, and that is not so valuable for our purpose a eoant defenders or fast flying cruisers like the beautiful and formidable Colum bia. lUckoning the averuRe wujres of an American at $400 a year, this vast sum represents the total work aud earning of 110 less than 80,050 men for a whole year. And the cost of the Maine alone $3,000,000 if we include alteration necessary to fit her for sea represented the work of 7,500 men for a year. KEtCFINQ IT DARK. The senator from Delaware (Mr. Oray) is a member of the committee on foreivn relation. There are many matter be fore that committee which the senate ought to know, and It would be like pull ing eyeteetb to get a aolitary fact from that committee a to the condition of our foreign relation at this time. I do not know that I am unduly criticising that committee. Itio of other com mittees. We seem to be proceeding upon the idea that Home senator, by virtue of bis birtb or by virtue of hi superiority of Intellect, is entitled to have secret of a public character and secrete them from the public gaze. Now, with all due deference, I feel my. elf just a competent to receive and act upon a matter of secrecy as the senator from Delaware or any other senator, and as a member of the chamber I am en titled to it if it 1 of a public character. I want the committee on naval affair to Investigate this matter and return the truth and all the truth. 1-t the re sponsibility be with them. It I not with me. If they fail to make a prompt in vestigation aud to report that Investi gation to the senate, and through the senate to the world, they will be held re sponsible for it bypidlicoplnlon. ' Stock Yards Jtarlura I'riin. The Illinois state board of railway nnd warehouse commissioner have prevailed upon the union stock yard at ('hloago to reduce the price on corn to shippers. Th former price, $1 tier bushel, I re duced so a to be satisfactory to the live slock shippers of the state. Heveral at tempt have been made to accomplish this by legislation, but the effort have failed. The conservative populist leader of Minnesota held a conference at Minneap olis on Wednesday of last week for the purpose of taking the preliminary atep toward consolidating the silver force. The Kansas Pacific railroad ha been sold by decree of court to the reorganiz ation committee and at a loss of seven million dollars to the government, Tl proposition of purchase by government ofllcial seems to have been made only to calm public sentiment and make it easier for the Wall street interests to fleece the people. It furnishes another striking illustration of the servility of the present adminihtrution to corporate interests.
